I saw something today that made me sick

As to the main point, does this mean the game sold well? It seems to me it's more likely that when Microsoft decided to create the Family Platinum Hits or whatever it's called that they realised they needed more games than just Fusion Frenzy, Viva Pinata, and Scene It. Looking over the Xbox's Family Platinum Hits list I doubt most of those games sold 400,000 copies either.

It certainly wasn't anywhere near 400k last time we saw it on NPD, but that was quite a while ago, so who knows.

I wish Secret Rings had more actually levels instead of having it be like "Here is one main level and then here are 15 sidequests." Other than that, I did have fun with it just like both of the Dreamcast games.

Totally agreed. My only gripes with Secret Rings are what you mentioned (the underwhelming and unrewarding progression) and the fact that it took a bit too long to actually get things going at the proper Sonic speed (really, the upgrades found in the game should pretty much be available from the jump).

But as you said, the game itself is a lot of fun - and it really does lay the groundwork for an awesome sequel, because there's very little wrong with game mechanics themselves and the concept they're built upon.

That one site has it at 1.2 million. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that Secret Rings has sold much higher.

Thanks for that. Yeah, hopefully so - and hopefully enough to bode well for another Wii-exclusive Sonic title like SR.

Secret Rings is still charting in Europe. I think Sonic overall is a "hit" this gen saleswize, but quality has never been worse. At least on the Ps360 version. the wii game is a different animal altogether with some hits and very decisive misses in its game design. But it was enough "hit" for me to buy and enjoy it. If you can find it for a cheap price, you can do much worse than Sonic and the Secret rings.

^ Your avatar reminds me of how happy I've been with my 2007 SEGA purchases on Wii. They've all got their own quirks and issues, but they're experiences worth permanently having in the collection, for my money (the ones I'm referring to being NiGHTS [my favorite of the pack, just a killer game], Secret Rings, and Ghost Squad). I'm sure there were other winners I didn't play, too.

Hopefully the same can be said about their 2008 Wii offerings, when all is said and done.

I hope so, too, but given what sold and what didn't sell... well, we'll see what happens.

People need to storm Sega HQ and UNSELL these copies and get their money back, like WTF.

I'll be in the storm, but only so I can get Daytona USA 3 made.

Didn't Shadow the Hedgehog make both the PS2's Greatest Hits line-up AND Gamecube's Player's Choice line-up? Doesn't that mean that it likely sold over 1 million copies worldwide between all three console versions? Bad sonic games selling isn't exactly new.

Yeah, Shadow actually did really well. The kids loved him. "Sonic with a Gun" couldn't sound any more lame to us, but to an eight year old, that probably sounds bad-ass as all hell.

Did NiGHTS ever break 100k in North America, or has there not been enough info to say one way or the other?

When I first played it (having not ever spent any time with the original, at that point - so the gameplay was totally new to me), I figured it would really build some steam and hype once people realized that the many positive aspects of the gameplay far outweigh some of the negative quirks that come in the package...but it seems the opposite happened and those negative aspects took center stage in many circles, unfortunately.

Well, The Sonic Adventures games sold millions on DreamCast and GameCube. That's no surprinsing at all.

Dude, you know why as well as I do.

Sonic games did incredibly well on GameCube alone since they practically sold to the Sonic X and "Nintendo fans whose first experience of Sonic was SA2:B" crowd. GameCube, much as I love it and was the only system I had last gen, was the kid and Sonic-lovers system.

Sonic has been crap since the Game Boy Advance but has still sold millions of copies, not sure why this surprises anyone.
Fixed, asshole. >:|

I think we should all come to terms with the fact that there will never be another good sonic game.

No, seriously.

Why must you hurt me? A man can dream. I'm not even asking for much. An 8. That's all I want. I'd even take a 7.

Hey at least there will always be Sonic hacks. Just check out Sonic Megamix:

Wow, I've never seen that before. It's obvious that the guys making this actually "get it," unlike most of the Sonic hacks I've seen.

All they need to do is take out homing attack and fix the terrible "EVERYTHING RESPAWNS ONCE YOU LEAVE THE SCREEN" problem and I'm all over this.

Sonic Rush and SR Adventure.

Sonic and the Secret Rings.

Having played the hack I can tell you tell you two things.

1. The homing attack is pretty good in it, using it wrong can screw you over (Homing into a spike covered enemy, hitting an Eggman box, overshooting the platform etc)

2. I'm pretty sure that stuffs like breakable walls respawn in the original game too. Not enemies or anything else though, so really, it's such a minor thing I don't know why you pointed it out.

Sega has no reason whatsoever to improve the next "main" Sonic game at all. And modern Sega being who they are, I have no faith in them to do so anyway. The fact that Sonic 2006 sold over 400,000 copies (criteria for becoming a Platinum Hits game) is probably enough for them to call the game a success.
Fortunately, no. StH cost more than the typical Sonic title, and wildly underperformed at the same time. Sega is aware of this and of the reasons why, which is why we haven't had another mainline title announced since (though Unleashed may be just that).

Rush Adventure is a great game. It took Dimps the better part of a decade to get their vision done right, but they finally nailed it and it is fun. It's definitely a different style from the originals, but I can't argue against new-school 2D Sonic as a viable direction for the series any more if it keeps hovering around SRA's quality or better.

Now if you want another great console title, well, who knows.

Has there ever been word on what Secret Rings' LTD is? Hopefully it performed better than Sonic 360/PS3, because it's a really fun game.

Apparently its outsold the 360/Ps3 versions.

Pretty sure Sonic Heroes got a greatest hits tag as well. So yea as long as it has Sonic on it, it'll sell. Why spend money making a good game, when a shitty one can sell just as well?

Don't forget Shadow the Hedgehog :{{{

Sonic Heroes sold millions of copies. The game was well over 1 million in Europe, and I'm pretty sure both the Gamecube and PS2 versions were close to or over a million each in the US. I wouldn't be surprised if total sales ended up approaching 4 million.

Sonic heroes wasn't a good game, but it was a step up from Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic 2006.

Guys don't judge the game on the demo. The demo was great compared to the game.

Yeah I bought it used for $20 and couldn't bring myself to finish the first level. That was the worst boss fight I've ever had to experience.

400,000 is platnum? Does Microsoft even know how platinum sales is defined in the real world? Just because they can make up whatever shit they want and sell it doesn't mean that they always SHOULD.

This is tragic, as I've always dreamed that Sonic will suddenly morph back into a solid experience someday. Deep inside I hoped and waited, with every terrible game making me even more jaded than the one before it. But obviously if people continue to suck up shit like this with out even worrying what it tastes like, the blue wonder is in for a pretty crappy ride.

Does nobody listen to me? Sales figures never dictate Platinum/Greatest Hits/Whatever status. I believe there were PS2 games that sold under 250,000 that went on to Sony's Greatest Hits line.

No, it didn't. Maybe it might someday? I doubt much more than that though, and that's only because they probably shipped 100k and will discount them right out the door.

To be fair, Sonic has been promoted heavily in most shopflyers that I've come across the last year.

It's "platinum" status is not all that suprising then.

yeah, I bought it when it came out. I needed a game for my 360... I was fortunate in being able to trade it the next day.
