I seriously love the Super FX chip

It just gives a look that you don't find anywhere else

What other games recapture this aesthetic and feel?

You should honestly look up videos of Star Fox 2. While not released it was finished and it really uses the FX chip in a way I'd like to have seen more of on the SNES.

I played a ton of Stunt Race FX when I was younger - loved the hell out of it, even with the tiny viewing area and horrendous framerate.

I can't really go back to it now, unfortunately, although the RC and stunt levels are still kind of fun.

Man, I loved that short period where Nintendo and Sega were introducing 3D chips on to their carts. The games were expensive as hell where I lived but boy were they cool. I used to remember going to my local game shop and getting so wowed at the AMAZING 3D GRAPHICS. THIS WAS THE FUTURE!!! Little did I know the Saturn, Playstation, and the N64 were just around the corner.

Seeing star fox in motion for the first time made me completely wig out

Amazing what the snes was capable of. Sort of wish it had a few more years left in it

Stunt race FX was unbelievable to me at the time, and invoked the same spectacle that Mario 64 did a few years later. It felt like a prototype N64 game. It's hard to go back to, but man was it impressive.

Even back then I was bummed at the super choppy framerate, but still put up with it because the sense of scale was just impossible to replicate on a sprite based game. The sequence where the arwing enters and flies through the twisting tunnels of Andross' hideout felt epic and otherworldly. No other game ever since has given me those vibes and I directly attribute it to the flat-shaded, low poly count of the game.

Edit: I recently saw StarFox 2's opening cinematic, the dragon chomping and spitting one of the spaceships and roaring and then going back straight to the camera gave me goosebumps!

I wish we could get a StarFox that looked like that but ran at 60fps though. Not just the arwing like in StarFox Zero.

Stunt Race FX alone does not get enough love. That game deserves better. Like a Virtual Console release.

That won't happen. :(

Isn't there some sort of copyright issue with the rights to the SuperFX chip that prevents Nintendo from doing that?

I thought that was the reason why Yoshi's Island on the GBA is on the VC but not Yoshi's Island SNES etc.

You don't see that look anywhere else because every single 3D accelerated graphics chip in the history of the industry can do better.

I love the look of Super FX games... the framerates, not so much. Still, Stunt Race FX is my favorite SNES racing game.

This can't be true, when is the last time you played it? I mean, I guess it COULD be true but, it's not so hot these days.

Wasn't there a game with a unicycle or something that used SuperFX?

You're thinking of Uniracers, and no it didn't use the Super FX chip.

Not much is really known about this game, though some people speculated that it may have turned into Vortex. But this might not be the case.

It wasn't a console exclusive, but the visuals always remind me of a game I played a bunch as a kid, LHX Attack Chopper.

This game was also on the Sega Genesis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6hNeidtXvc but it was very slow.

There is also a port of F22 Interceptor as well, which was also slow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAHGjQMMsvk

The Sega 32x had some neat flat shaded poly games:

For it's time it was awesome. Starfox looked amazing at release. Having only a Genesis at the time, I'll admit I was a bit jealous.

It's a little hard to control, but I like the atmosphere and the graphics still look really cool. That underwater section in Aqua Tunnel is great.

I always loved the look of Silpheed on the Sega CD:

Granted this game doesn't use real time polygons for the environments as they are all streaming video. But it does have that flat shaded polygon look. The game only uses polygons for the player ship and enemies.

But I still highly enjoy the game itself: https://youtu.be/Crjgu2aE1QE?t=790

Shitty early 90's flat-shaded 3D graphics are just the best. Not enough indie developers are trying to ape that particular style.

Looking at the GIFs posted so far, it makes me wonder if the Super FX's rendered polygons are more stable than the PS1's - don't seem to be significant z-ordering issues or texture warping from what I can see.

I really like that look, too. Though I think going back to actually playing them at their original frame rate would feel bad.

Man I played a shitload of that game on PC, it was amazing. You could guide the tow missiles using the mouse after you fired them. With all the damn commands that game had, I don't know HOW they ported it to console.

Here is the game overclocked for what it's worth.

You can tell there is still a crazy amount of input lag.

I actually just played some Star Fox today, and it's still awesome. I played Stunt Race FX a week or so ago and yes, the frame rate is not great and there is input lag, but it's still totally playable. Another game that I have fond memories of but haven't played in a very long time is Dirt Trax FX. There was a tag mode that my friends and I would play for hours.

I really need to get my hands on a Star Fox 2 cart.
