I think HBO's True Detective is overrated.

Not to throw cold water on NeoGAF's rabid True Detective fanbase, but I'm in full agreement with Matt Gilbert. There are shows more deserving of mass hysteria.

Just wondering if there are a few folks out there feeling the same way.

It happens. Every so often, everyone you know is obsessed with a TV show, and you don’t quite get it. They’re gushing about how it’s the latest in the quality TV revolution and picking through episodes for clues like NSA data-miners with Skype records; and you’re standing on the sidelines, shrugging.
"True Detective" premiered at a moment when, in the wake of “Breaking Bad” and before the returns of “Mad Men,” “The Americans,” and “Game of Thrones,” there weren’t a lot of challenging dramas on the air. “True Detective” may have become the beneficiary of a spare TV landscape.

This is sacrilege around these parts:

For my money, Harrelson’s performance is the best on the show. Harrelson has given viewers the only character who seems like he could actually exist.

sure, but that says more about the ridiculous hyperbole than the show. no show could live up to some of the praise it's getting

No, it's a fantastic show and deserving of all the hype.

give me a few days and you'll have my definitive answer because im still in awe by the ending

People like things. Who cares if you don't like it as much as others? Don't take a moral superiority over not liking things as much as others.

No, it's a fantastic show and it's the only program on TV that has kept me actively engaged and waiting weekly for the next episode since I was a kid.

I think a bunch of people looked at the finale and came to the wrong conclusion about a lot of things. Rust's character being one of them.

I'm sad those characters are not coming back.

Without fail, the second anyone likes something someone will immediately shout, "it's overrated."

Who the fuck cares? Something doesn't have to be the greatest thing ever to be the greatest thing to you and vice versa.

I don't get how this can be used as a slight against TD. We don't watch TV dramas exclusively for accurate representations of reality. Marty's character is supposed to be the human connection in the story, standing in contrast to the esoteric Rust.

Lol at the Americans being mentioned in the same breath as Breaking Bad.

But, on topic, ... Overrated? No. I mean, I'd like to see how they do now that that epic narration is no longer available to them[with the present time duo narrating their past exploits], but this thing is definitely on track to something phenominal.

I haven't seen this show but isn't it a bit ... early to pontificate about overrating? It's not like it's being canonized as a GOAT right now.. I mean yeah it's a hyped show at the moment but that really doesn't mean shit in the grand scheme, look at what else is on tv right now lol.

Yeah but that doesn't mean it wasn't good. I was a die-hard Breaking Bad fan and even I acknowledge that it had serious lulls and was too silly be to taken so damn seriously.

A lot of shows get this treatment.

Haven't watched TD but I wouldn't be surprised given the likability of the cast... Easy to understand the hyperbole. Been amazed by the amount of people with normally poor taste I know RAVING about TD without being able to articulate why *shrugs*. Probably still an alright show and it'll probably get better with bad press.

Breaking Bad is also overrated so there's that.

The problem I see is that people keep comparing what is essentially an 8 episode mini-series written by one person and directed by one person to entire runs of 5+ season television show with a whole slew of different writers and directors.

What a pointless article, of course there will people that don't like it.

What a piece of shit article.

This isn't even a criticism of the show. It's an attack on a show's fan base. A sect that likes to look too close and find too much meaning...

Um... let them? Who does it hurt?

If it annoys you that much, not to be "in that loop", maybe start looking into why it bothers you so...

Eh, I don't know. Either you watch and like it, or you watch and don't like it (why are you watching), or you don't watch it and don't care. Why does it have to be a matter of overratedness? Entertainment shouldn't be so complicated.

Yes it's overrated because people tend to collectively go apeshit over things that they like. It is still very enjoyable though.

And it's not at a bad thing to identify with Harrelson's character. I like him every bit as much as Rust myself and I think Harrelson's acting is superb.

I thought it was overrated before everyone else realized it was overrated. I even have the article I can point to when it becomes rather trite and runs on a bit too long. Am i relevant yet?

Yeah, the show with amazing writing, acting, direction, cinematography, and McConaughey's acting (deserves to be listed separately) is pretty terrible.

Yes.

Of course, everything is either best ever or worst ever. Very little middle ground.

Didn't realize "overrated" meant something is terrible.
