I think I like The Terminator more than Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Dont forget the terrible attempt at sfx when they are making their escape from the mental hospital in the cop car. Dragging behind them what is clearly either a mannequin, a dummy, or perhaps just clothes stuffed with a bunch of rags. Just terrible. Also the super obvious green screen shortly after when Sarah is checking John for wounds. For a movie that had sfx that stood out in so many way it was off putting to see so much stuff that would have been considered poor effects even 20 years before T2.

I know there has been a growing trend on putting T1 over T2. I think this mostly comes from people watching T2 way more times as time passes (and specially in their youth), and action movies are a dime a dozen each year.

T2 is big, loud, fun, funny, and incredibly entertaining. T1 is an horror action movie that has had its quality better preserved only because Hollywood pretty much gave up on those kind of movies.

T1 isn't better for its time than T2 was. It's just your perspective that is skewed that way.

Nah, I've always felt T1 was the superior film, even back when the sequel was first released.

Do I really need to bring up how awful some of the special effects in T1 were? The way Arnie looks and moves in certain scenes is pretty laughable.

Just watched T1 again 5 minutes ago because of this thread. Movie is still awesome laughable rubber face Arnie aside. I will watch T2 again tomorrow.

Is Nick Stahl ok?

T3 was cool because the women were hot.

last i heard he got arrested for masturbating in an adult theater or something. so, uh, i guess? at least he isn't missing anymore

i thought the ending sort of redeemed T3 from being a T2 retread. but if they ever make another movie i hope they pretend like the last two movies never happened

If they make another Terminator movie it needs to be full on reboot or at the very least it needs to act as though the last couple movies never happened. I think the best possible thing a new Terminator movie could do is be a Terminator 1 prequel. As in tell the story of how the resistance wins the war and how Kyle gets sent back. Based on the future we saw in the original movie.

The effects when Arnold,is in varying states of decay is rough at times but I still love stop motion endoskeleton at the end. The crudeness of the effects and the stop motion look when moving actually makes the endoskeleton look more off putting and terrifying.

I completely agree. Arnold, the giant, unstoppable killing machine, works better as an unrelenting antagonist rather than "My Pet Terminator."

It's pretty brilliant. Arnold's characters are very traditionally styled heroes, so casting one as the villain works extremely well.

I'm surprised no one else did use him as a villain. I find it interesting how despite it being his truly breakout role that he wasn't typecast as a villain.

I hope they stop making Terminator movies... Salvation with CGI Arnolds was bad enough, and we all know that movies can't match the world as it was described by Kyle in T1.

Also, it had the awesome chase scene with the big wheel thingy and the cars with no drivers.

Did you know that Arnie actually financed the whole scene!? The thing was planed but the Studios didn't want to pay for it. But Arnie said "We really NEED this scene" and so he paid for it :D

I agree. I still remember how fucking terrified I was by the bare endoskeleton when I was a kid. I think they made it work despite the crudeness of it at times. Rubber skin looking Arnie genuinely looks awful though. The crudeness there helps nothing. Not that it breaks the movie or anything. It's just very noticable.

You now realize that the guy on the motorcycle in the ditch during stunt scenes was clearly not Arnold Schwarzenegger and from this moment onwards you will notice it everytime you watch T2 thus temporarily breaking immersion.

You're welcome.

That's also not Ed Furlong on the bike. It's a stuntwoman

Heh, I remember this. "They were going to cut it due to budget, so I just gave them the money to do it anyway"

Yeah the parts after he is run over by the truck has some pretty iffy makeup. Its even more iffy when watching the remastered blu ray disc.

This thread is the first time ive EVER seen people shit on Furlong for his performance in T2. It's blowing my mind man.

I thought he was great.

I think Furlong was fine. A lot of it comes from the writing too, asking too much of him and making him this audacious child on page that they had to realize could turn into annoying kid on screen. I thought Furlong sold it all about as well as you can expect a child actor to and is really not that bad. Just in comparison with Michael Biehn, he falls short some.

Furlong did a pretty good job being a whiny kid. I mean it wasn't a great performance but it was a good performance for a child actor. I didn't like squeaky whiny John Conner; Especially squeaky whiny John Conner teaching castrated Arnold Terminator how to be a human, stupid unnecessary "now I know why you cry" Pinocchio bullshit.

Not only is T2 overrated, it stands for everything wrong with the modern summer blockbuster crap that gets away with shallow characters and route exposition because, "What did you expect it's a big dumb fun ride."

God that shits me, such a lame excuse for mediocrity.

Nothing in T1 compared to this.

Watched Jurassic Park this week. It's a lot bigger culprit than T2 with the self aware written lines, shallow characters. T2 did a ton more right, and still both aren't to blame for the modern summer blockbuster. Look at the turn of the century films.

Terminator 2 for me no doubt. I own it in VHS,DVD,Bluray, Laserdisc.

Only issue I have with terminator 2 is that it has the worst line of the series.....little baby eddie fur saying,"Did you call 'moi' a dipshit??" I hate that he said "moi"....But other then that I love it.

Terminator 2 praise is... up there. I like it a lot but when people talk about it it's like it's some kind of higher existence of filmmaking than most other things. I don't get it, but that's just me. It's an awesome movie though.

T2 was the first movie that I saw in "HD", it came with one of the (Extreme edition?) dvd as a pc windows media # file.

Anyway, I like them both. Not choosing.

I recently got the itch to watch them and promptly did so not two days ago.

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you however, OP. Judgment Day is a step up over T1 in almost everything. And it was glaringly apparent watching them back to back.

Linda Hamelton put on a better performance. Arnold put on a better performance. The music was better. The action was better. The T-1000, in my humblest of opinions, was just as every bit as menacing and badass as the T-800 in T1.

Don't get this post twisted, I fucking LOVE T1. L-O-V-E-I-T. But T2 will always be numero uno in my book.

T1 is scary, T2 is the perfect blockbuster action film. I think either choice is valid. They both excel at what they set out to do.

With the Alien films, the original towers above Aliens.

I feel both are so different in what they're trying to do, so which one you prefer comes down to the tone you prefer. Personally I prefer T2, but only by a hair, and mostly due to Horner's arrangements (though I do love the synth in T1, it fits its tone like a glove). T1 is still great and a prime example of making the most of a modest budget. If I had any gripes with T2, it is indeed that it's belief in excess can sometimes cause a few of the finer details to be overlooked. But that ending... The feels man...

I think they're both excellent, but I prefer T1 for the romance angle and the better acting (IMO). I also find certain moments in the film to be genuinely scary, as if I'm in Sarah or Reese's shoes as they try to escape from the Terminator.

Linda Hamilton put on a better performance.

She had a great performance and it was a natural progression from the Sarah we met in T1.

She even became the parallel of Kyle as the one dubbed the screaming lunatic on video.

We can't forget that Linda is also the reason there is a T3, T4 and TSCC crap.

Thanks Linda. :[

T1 is the better film. The sense of horror and foreboding you get from not only the impending apocalypse but the seemingly invincible terminator is amazing. T2 is a great action movie but they totally did neuter Arnold because he's the good guy.
