I think I want a Vita...

Terrible advice that tends to pop up every time someone is asking about getting a Vita. Do not buy an OLED Vita (1000). Here is why.

Thanks for posting this! Just checked into the thread and was about to go digging for some old posts...

Yes, no one in 2017 should consider the 2011 Vita model.

Vita is still my most played system on a day-to-day basis. It's still going to keep getting games through the end of 2018 imo. It's possible Switch even helps it in that regard.

And I'm sorry, but I've been rocking a 1000 for nearly 4 years now, all that screen panic is nonsense. It is definitely the better model imo. The 2000 is not without its benefits, but it feels cheap by comparison. I came really close to trading my 1000 when everybody was talking up the newer model, but after using it for a while I realized it wasn't worth it.

Love my Vita's, (yes I have 2) Had my 1st one since launch and I still play them a lot, as there are some great games for Vita. Still don't get why Sony just couldn't make the memory cards cheaper, it would have helped the Vita a lot in the early days.

I use my original Vita for official games and PSN access.

My second Vita, I got off a mate for £60 (original OLED version too) and luckily it was on Firmware 3.60, so I can use the Henkaku hack and emulate most of the older consoles. I have a big selection of the best NES, SNES, GBA and MegaDrive / Genesis games on a memory card and PS1 & PSP emulator now too. It breaths a lot of new life into the Vita, when turning it into a multi-format system.

Buying a system at the end of its life-cycle is not a difficult decision.

Look at the games, look at the hardware. Look at the additional cost (memory cards, PS+)... and decide if the games are worth it.

Imagine Sony announced a PSP3 out of the blue and was fully backwards compatible with Vita, had SD cards as the memory, and had a bunch of storage built in too. And it had bigger, clickable analog sticks and 4 shoulder buttons.

If I could sell you mine I would.. thing just collects dust. It got some play when emulators started coming out for it but that even that seems better on 3ds,

There's actually some work being done on a micro SDXC to Vita adaptor in the hacking scene. Will be interesting if that goes somewhere, would seriously being the price of storage down.

Best battery life and suspend/resume feature in any handheld. This thing will last over a week in standby mode.

Also, I have a used 16gb card, and am not wanting for more space. If I need space, I delete what I'm not playing at the moment. You can always redownload for free later on.

Better late than never right?

Oh yea!!!! I'm officially apart of Vita GAF! Thank you lol.

I need this in my life. Not because of how expensive Vita memory cards are. I already have a 64gb card anyway. No, I need it because 64gb isn't close to enough. To be able to use large SD cards as the memory and have double the storage space....yummy.

Hmmm after reading this thread I think I should get a second Vita as a backup. I have the 1000 model and the eventual screen problems are scaring me lol.

I enjoyed mine. Some great indie titles plus old PS games I wanted to play again or missed out on. And I got the bulk of my library on sale.

Great handheld, but I've neglected mine for a while now. While the indies are nice, I'd rather play those on the big screen. Moreover, not too big of a fan of the Japanese stuff.

Launch Vita here. Launch Vita that got a LOT of use. I've bought more games for my Vita than I have for any other platform, and that's not even counting PS1, PSP or PS Plus games. By fsr my most played platform of this generation. Haven't had any major issues with it. Take that as you will. With that said I do have burn in on my Vita. But it's really not noticeable except in really specific conditions.

Trust me I know. I have 4 64 GB cards (one for PSP / PS1 , the others used to have specific purposes but I've had to rearrange for space so I don't need a 5th card). A nice 512GB SDXC would solve a lot of my problems.

Really hope they can crack that, because that would make Vita even easier to use, not having to swap cards all the time.

I would go for a switch, if you want something that has already a hugh library, just take the 3ds it has the best games for core gamers. For mainstream i would say ps4, but that isn't a handheld

True, I have the splotches on the screen. I only notice it when the screen goes black and it doesn't bother me that much. Maybe I shouldn't freak out about the screen then. If there was a huge problem with the screen, I probably would have saw it along time ago.

The only other problem I have with my Vita is that after charging it I still get the low battery notification. I started getting that problem from a firmware update. I'm not sure what I should do about that lol. I looked online and one of the solutions was to open my Vita and changed the battery but I kind of don't want to do that.

Do it. You'll need to import or buy a used one at this point since they don't seem to be shipped to the west anymore, but still.

Vita has been my favourite gaming console for the past ~ 4 years. If portability is important to you (and it is to me), then the handheld is fantastic. Yes, you can pick up the library elsewhere, but elsewhere isn't really something I can take on the train with me or play on my lunch break.

Yeah, the library for the past few years has mostly been Japanese games and indies, but I love both of those (Japanese games in particular) and there have been other bits of scattered support in between (for example, last year had Assassin's Creed; Civilization and XCOM). I don't know why all these suggestions for Switch are coming up when it's obvious the console is also going to be indies and Japanese games going forward, scattered with Nintendo games (which can't be that much of a draw in the first place if OP is thinking of Vita).

The final thing I'd add is that it's a great legacy device. I wrote an article about this recently (not published yet). Even if Vita doesn't have a native GTA game, you can just grab Liberty City Stories/Vice City Stories from PSN. If you want a classic 3D platformer, grab the Spyro games. If you fancy trying something different, just browse the previous libraries on PSN and pick something up which is just incredible. I'm playing through the original Tomb Raider games atm and I love it.

Never cared about Vita but i've been thinking about buying one because of P4G.
I need to check what kind of games are out to solidify my purchase because one game is not enough to consider it.

With games announced for the Vita and it still going strong I think I really want a Vita now. Is it still viable? Are there any good deals?

I've noticed a lot of games I love on pc are already on the system like Don't Starve and soon Stardew Vally. The kid will appreciate playing our PS3 Minecraft maps on the road.

If I get one soon am I doing the right thing?

Would depend on your situation and taste in games.

pro
2 free games each month with PS+
Lots of Indie and Japanese games
RPGs all over the place
Giant library of diverse games
Great battery life
Nice design, great screen
Remote play is great if you have a PS4

Bad
Memory card cost
Not a ton of AAA grade games
No real chance of any future AAA games
(Personally) not the most comfortable thing to hold

Vita is past its prime, but it is a really nice retirement community, worth it for any gamer who has an open mind.

Has anyone bought a used memory card? I think that's my only option at this point.

2 of my 4 Vita memory cards (a 16gb and an 8gb) are second hand and I've never had any trouble with them at all.

Saying that I've never had any bother with any of my cards, including my 2 64GB ones.

edit: wow! just checking the prices of 64GB cards and the cost has absolutely sky-rocketed. £80 on play-asia and £97 on Amazon. Jesus I'm glad I bought mine when I did.

Vita is my #1 played console since launch. I really love jrpgs and don't mind taking risks on some of the small titles out there when I play them on Vita.

Sooo much great time spent playing games like:

Persona 4G
Disgaea 3/4
Killzone Mercenries
World of Final Fantasy
Trails of Cold Steel I/II
Digimon Cyber Slueth
Final Fantasy X/X-II
Hyperneptunia
Tales of Hearts R
Little Big Planet
Hot Shots Golf
Whipeout
Uncharted
etc..

There's also a thread here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1329852
that goes over a bunch of the new titles that were just released, or are coming soon.

I co-sign all said here OP!!! The vita is amazing! As a (J)RPG fan it is heaven!!!
My favorite handheld to date and I have owned every Nintendo handheld since the game boy(the one that took 4 batteries)

The only thing that sucks is as an 1000 owner we still use that weird USB/charger.

Vita is always viable.

But don't expect the world on it. I love mine, and enjoy playing games on it, but it certainly has it's limitations. Hardware wise it's getting harder for indies to port games that would be a perfect fit due to memory limitations, and storage is it's own major problem with no solution in sight other than dropping like $120 on the biggest storage card you can.

I have a 16 GB card holding 34 games, the majority of them indie. Only Binding of Isaac runs worse than other platforms:
Code:
Spelunky
Nuclear Throne
Crypt of the Necrodancer
Risk of Rain
Binding of Isaac
Downwell
One Way Heroics
TxK
WE ARE DOOMED
Nidhogg
Woah Dave!
Geometry Wars 3
LUFTRAUSERS
Mighty Flip Champs
Shovel Knight
The Sun And Moon
Axiom Verge
Super Meat Boy
VVVVVV
10 Second Ninja X
Hitman GO
Lara Croft GO
Nova-111
Letter Quest Remastered
Lumines
Hue
Akzend 2
Hot Shots Golf
OlliOlli
OlliOlli 2
Vib Ribbon
Retro City Rampage
Proteus
Rock Boshers DX:DC
The Quiet Collection
10x8
Super Crate Box
Magic Snack Planet Deluxe
Tuffy the Corgi

And that's just the indie stuff. If that's not your bag, there's a bunch of larger titles, more easily accessed via physical versions, such as Persona 4 (Golden and Dancing), Danganronpa, Shiren the Wanderer, Gravity Rush, Rayman Oranges and Lemons, Lego Star Wars, etc.

And, even though it's not my field of expertise (or interest) it has shit tons of JRPGs, and porn games thinly veiled as JRPGs.

My only complaint is that my OG vita has a few scratches in the screen that go vertically, and are very noticeable if that area of the screen is all one color or if I'm in the system UI. Getting a replacement screen would be about the same as a new vita, and I'm not sure retroactively putting on a screen protector in the first place would fix it (I know I should have put one on in the first place but I'm never good at putting those things on).

TL;DR: Hell yes. Get a Vita. Best decision you'll make in years.

Damn...i never considered buying a vita... but there's a lot of games on this list i never touched but am highly interested in, also cosmic star heroine will be on vita and the remote play seems really cool when i just want to lay in bed and play (which is around 90% of the time). I really have to resist right now...

I love mine and use it daily, if you are just joining now have years worth of fantastic games to catch up on. Get atleast a 32gb card if you can afford it. Also recommend any of the games by Futurlabs or Roll7

If I get one soon am I doing the right thing?

Here's the thing people who try to convince other people not to get Vitas either don't get or won't tell you:

The Vita is not getting cheaper.

Sony is not at a precipice where they will suddenly realize the fate of the Vita and drop support/the price. Stores are not overstocked, not realizing the Vita is not popular. The Vita's fate is about the same now as it was 4 years ago, just like the price.

If you want one just buy the damn thing and start having fun.

I mainly use mine to stream my PS4 games.

There's a handful of vita games that I intend to play, but not atm.

It's definitely a great system to have and I'd recommend buying one especially if you have a PS4.

I was looking at the Nyko power grips for the 1000 model and holy fuck at the prices....

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0079V29EI/?tag=neogaf0e-20

2000 compatible grip is considerably cheaper. I'm thinking about moving to a 2000 unit, don't know if I'll miss the OLED image but just the micro USB charger( which I carry with me daily for my note 4 as opposed to that cheap 1000 charger cable) and the more readily available accessories may tip me towards the revised model.

Nintendo sure as hell cant make one

like wtf
I actually had really high hopes for the Switch. I'd convinced myself that it was going to be the spiritual successor to Vita. Then the Switch presentation happened. My hopes and dreams were crushed. It hit me like a ton of bricks that we really never see another Vita ever again. It's depressing.

Wouldn't it make more sense to get a Switch? You'll probably get a million indie games plus actual quality first part exclusives.

Vita has a set-in-stone library backlog, and can be had for much cheaper, even taking into account the need to buy memory. I think it's silly getting into it for it's future (i.e., none) but it's a cool legacy system.

I've also wanted one for a really long time , but haven't got the push to buy one. If stardew valley comes out for it, i'll deff pick up.

I have a number of OLED vitas that I love but I have to admit I reach for the 2000 model most of the time because it's more comfortable to hold.

TBH, if I didn't have my OLED doing emulation then I probably wouldn't even bother.

Btw, persona 4 golden is like £3-4 now on sale, but I dunno for how much longer. It's not expensive by default either anymore.

Huh, it depends on whether you want the Vita of 2011 or the Vita of 2014, Switch is closer to the Vita of 2014 based on the sort of third party games Nintendo has courted for the launch window (RPGs, Puzzle games, fighting games, series only older gamers would recognise), and Nintendo's own first party games are filling the big budget gap much like how Sony's own first party games did on Vita.

Crucially though, the Switch does seem aimed at the video game enthusiast with a high attach rate. In its first year the Switch isn't going to appeal to 2DS players who buy a 3DS device and 1-2 games lifetime, neither is it going to appeal to the mainstream player of AAA games who are primarily gaming on PS4/Xbox One.

Nintendo wouldn't have gone out and courted Konami for an exclusive revival of Bomberman if they didn't know this already.

How do you guys pull off remote play with BB and Dark Souls??? I know R1 spam but still how do you get the R2.. Lol.

If you wish to play some of your favorite PC indie games on the go, you'd be better served with a GPD Win. More expensive (well not that much if you factor memory cost in) but definitelt better.
This. Love my Vita but a GPD Win will have me bury my Vita for good. Much bigger library, plus emulation of most gaming systems in existence easily outdo the Vita.
