I think I'm addicted to mushrooms

Just found out these do grow in Japan. Gonna have to go searching for them.

I can't put my finger on why but Broccoli really is great.

For me, I really like them when they're crunchy. If they're overcooked, they lose their greatness. There's a Chinese food place in my local mall that all I've ever had there is chicken and broccoli with fried rice and they leave it crunchy. It's amazing.

I go mushroom hunting with my gf all the time. From about now until September you can find a wide range of edible mushrooms. Chicken of the Woods, Hen of the Woods, Oysters, Lobster Mane, Shaggy Mane, and a few others.

Those are some good eating. Chicken of the Woods has the texture of cooked chicken and can be used as a meat substitute for vegetarians. Tastes like chicken too. First time I tried it in chicken noodles I had no idea it was a mushroom and not actual chicken.

Regular button mushrooms like you get with a steak or on a pizza are terrible by comparison after you develop a taste for the good ones.

mushrooms/fungus are an amazing organism taken very for granted on earth.

just wait till you explore past the standard button/portabellos...

morels, chanterelles, boletes, lobsters, lions mane, oyster, puffballs, candycaps, shaggies, shrimp russulas, etc etc.

my fam goes mushroom hunting a lot - so fun!

I legitimately want to try Huitlacoche but I doubt any Mexican restaurant has them here in Australia considering how little success they had in America.

good ol' corn smut! I found this once before on a menu in the US - super good. was in Santa Fe, New Mexico.... I also found it once sold i na grocery store in a can. gave it to my brother don't know how it worked out for him.

Not a fan of the texture of mushrooms. Some of them taste great, though. Never really ate them until last year, when I also discovered a bunch of other foodstuffs I dared to taste.

i used to eat a lot of my mom's lao bamboo and mushroom soup.

but i do love mushroom. shitaki, portabella, white button mushrooms. and some other exotic ones that i sometimes buy (y)

Mushrooms are a blessed food. They are as good as meat but there is no meat.

It's magic you can believe in, magic you can sing a hymn to, magic you should worship.

Make sure its the exact same subspecies, it does have a few friends that pretty much have rocket fuel in them.. :D Morchella elata is the edible one.

Yeah I have the JP names and whatnots from a Japanese page that has info on mushrooms. Will be asking the old guy that teaches me about these things in regards to the correct species. Hes the one that usually checks to make sure I didnt fuck anything up with what I picked when we go hunting for wildmushrooms in the past lol.

Yep. I like the flavor of them, but can't handle the texture at all, nor the knowledge that they're a fungus and how they sprout.

Not for me.

This is kinda me but I can eat anything that is "stuffed mushroom size" or smaller and I'm good. Shittakes and Portobellos are a bit much for me.

edit: Also hate the texture of Tofu. Pretty much the exact same texture to me in a lot of ways.

Mushrooms are great to cook with, lots you can do with them. Big fan of marinated and grilled portobello caps, especially in burger form. Throw some hummus on there, red onion, lettuce and tomato - damn good at a barbeque.

To those who find eating mushrooms weird because they are fungus, how do you deal with eating the flesh of an animal that was alive and blood soaked before being prepared as a food ?

I was a vegetarian my entire life until last year (it's hard to be a vegetarian outside of India and I finally gave up as western vegetarian food is crap compared to what I was used to for two decades) and honestly I still hate the smell of meat, especially when its being cooked..it's borderline pungent and disgusting to me. But once cooked it's great.

When I was a kid I ate a lot of mushrooms, but after a friend gave my mom a bad batch that resulted in me throwing up, I actively avoided them.

Took over a decade to get over it lol. Nowadays I won't say I'm a big fan, but I'm okay with eating mushrooms again.

Kind of odd that you don't refer to mushroom types by their specific names in English. Those in the OP are agaricus AFAIK.

I have always been more partial to chanterelle. Love the taste and the texture.

Dude. Are you me.

My kindergarten teacher told us that mushrooms are poisonous and this was after I ate a whole lot. Took me the same time to get over it and even now I hate the texture of thickly cut mushrooms.

Oh, make sure to keep that ol' guy as a friend, it is amazing how many delicious ones you'll never try because, well, one doesn't want to muck around, and well, you didn't know about them.. :)

Love picking shrooms, always nice to find a yellow field of chanterelles, or a batch of chicken in the woods, then you got a few nice dinners to look forward too!!

I didn't like mushrooms when I was a kid at all but I agree, they are awesome. One of my favorite simple dishes is Bone in Porkchops, noodles, and cream of mushroom as like a gravy for both. So good

I just find fungus a lot more disgusting than animal meat. Part of it is that I think of fungus as a disgusting microorganism, and mushrooms are like a blown up version of that. Nasty. That earlier gif of mushrooms sprouting is absolutely vile.

Imagine a tardigrade the size of a cow. Would you eat a burger of that?

For similar reasons, I can't bring myself to eat things like shrimp/crayfish/lobster etc. Too insect-like.

Ahh mushrooms the fruits of the forest, they go great with so many dishes but they are best when enjoyed on their own. Although i do love a good mushroom omlette.

Have a bottle of this on standby for when i want to give something that mushroomy kick

Mushrooms are delicious. What are some good mushroom-centric recipes?
Fake haggis. Since fresh chopped mushrooms resemble the texture of kidney bits, people who don't like sheep innards make this every year for Easter (but not only).

Also avaiable as pie:

I love me some mushies. I love my button mush but the odd time switch it up with some Shitake, Portabellos or Crimini. I'll have some magic mush once every few years in some tea or chocolate when out camping.

This happens a lot with banana and avocados to other people. I once ate a banana with too much black pulp and vomited. Didn't eat any more for like 10 years and now I love them but I think I'm slightly allergic to them.

I have a tough time getting past the texture. I can sometimes appreciate the flavour to a degree but generally they don't do it for me. Talking button mushrooms here mostly; I don't have much experience with other kinds.

Weirdly I actually like eating raw mushrooms.

There has to be a name for this. It kind of happened to me years ago with sushi. I ended up eating some while I was already feeling gross and I subconsciously made the connection that the sushi did it (when it did not!). For a long time afterwards, having sushi would make me feel slightly ill, even though I love the stuff. It took a long time to finally get over it.

Of the food kind of course.

I put them in everything these days.

That's the stuff.

(not my pictures btw, obviously)

Who doesn't love some good old shrooms? Let's share good tips to manage our moisture

How can I make these things ? The second pic especially.
