I Think I'm Done With FPS Shooters

Just let the outposts go. It's okay, you don't have to retake them back or anything. Karma events and Outpost attacks are just for bonus exp/karma.

If you do them every time they're available, you're probably overshooting the upgrade curve.

I agree. I don't do them every time at all. Just, hard to leave it alone if you've just liberated one, and you've not driven away more than a bit away when it's under massive attack.

OP, go play Dead Space 1 and 2. Also go play the Dragon Age games and The Witcher games too. Also try Dota or LoL...

Yeah Dead Space was great but that kind of goes to my point. It wasn't FPS so it allowed for more interesting gameplay mechanics. Loved the way all the holographic visual stuff worked. Probably the coolest UI and HUD ever in a game of its ill.

FPS is not my genre of choice though or anything. I mainly play RPGs of whatever sort or action adventures like ratchet and clank or god of war of monster Hunter or stuff of that nature. Currently playing DQVIII on my PS2 emulator.

Hoping to get Grim Fandango once it hits. Everything is just biding time for Bloodborne though. I'm back and forth on The Order day 1 purchase. The setting and characters and the Dynamic with the half breeds and all that is highly intriguing.

I think COD AW is pretty good, felt pretty fresh to me in comparison!

You're right, I know. :( I'm at 40% completion and I think I've done every Karma event and Outpost assault that I could, except maybe 2 or 3.

Far Cry 4 is a game that rewards you for overshooting the power curve, though, as opposed to Shadow of Mordor.

Nope. I still enjoy a good FPS.

I'm glad the genre is as popular as ever.
Me too. Don't think I've been truly disappointed in any of the ones I've played recent except for Destiny. And that game I had issues with the structure of the game, not the actual shooting.

House of the Dead: Overkill is a must play. Or Typing of the Dead: Overkill, that works, too.

I'm going to take your advice. It's one of the remaining HOTDs that I haven't played yet. I didn't get to play HOTD4 until 2008 then it launched on PSN.

The pinnacle of the FPS genre to me was Counter-strike for LAN and COD4 for online. These are the real mccoys. The rest that followed are just imitations of the same formula.

The only FPS that interests me this gen is 60.

FPS shooters. RIP In Peace.

On topic, I would like a lot more third person shooter presence honestly. Uncharted 2 and Gears 3 were top tier for me last gen.

Nah. Halo 5 beta, Wolfenstein, Titanfall and Metro Redux were great.

Even Destiny is okay before the grind gets to you. I didn't like Far Cry 4 that much, but I think that might just be me being sick of the Ubi formula more than anything else.

I do admit that recent multiplayer FPS on consoles don't really have the staying power that Halo CE-Reach & Call of Duty 2/4-MW2 had, etc. Halo 5 is definitely looking to change that though. I've already put in a bunch of hours into the beta.

Not for me. I play all sorts of games so I never get sick of first person shooters. Nothing beats a good round of Rush in Bad Company 2.

RIP in peace

First-person shooter shooters

I dunno, I don't have much interest in picking up most FPS titles, but I still find myself playing Doom and Quake mods to this day. Even if I don't see most of them to completion, it's still always interesting to muck around with 'em.

I'm done with ATM Machines, also.

I hope someone does a demake of FPS Shooter for the Nintendo SNES

Tired of putting in your PIN number, eh?

These GAF Forums are pretty rad

You should try some RPG games instead.

Sumtimes GAF is funny

With the coming of the popularity of Call of Duty 4 it was inevitable other developers would attempt to cash in on the hype surrounding it and release their own titles of its ilk. For awhile there I enjoyed quite a few of them. But over the past few years and now this new generation, I think I've found myself completely through with this entire genre.

I recently got Wolfenstein New Order in the mail from gamefly and put some time into it. The opening spectacle, the gunplay, the chaos of war, the giant mechs and mech dogs and dual wielding weapons. Ripping off mounted chaingun and running around firing away. All happening within the first few hours! Fantastic right?

Nope. Bored stiff. Totally disengaged with the dialogue. Couldn't give 2 shits about the story. Yawning while tossing grenades and knifing people in the throat while taking bunkers and finding secret files. Bored to fucking tears. The same thing happened with the other hyped shooter this year in Titanfall. I picked it up first thing on the PC. And while the different dynamic of wall running and double jumping was cool, it again bored me to tears. After maybe 8 hours of online play, which as usual just became a game of running around in circles shotgunning in the face and avoiding any Titan gunplay as you died in about 10 seconds getting into one, I was through.

Maybe I am done with this whole genre. I just can't seem to get engaged in any of them anymore. Even Killzones fantastic playing Multiplayer barely kept me going long. Hell it may be since Call of Duty 4 that I've actually been able to play a FPS for long. Left 4 Dead 2 has the fun dynamic of tons of different modes and that one was just fun for some reason. BOOMER! Pop. Destiny held my attention due to the various worlds and the badass looking equipment and all the moves and attacks you could do, but again that had been shelved and untouched for months now.

Anyone else at this point? Pretty much signing off with FPS shooters. I just can't seem to get entertained by then anymore. Maybe it is the same as it was back in the NES / SNES / Genesis days where after a decade of side scrollers it's time to move on. Hopefully the industry finds another love child genre to abuse this gen. Thank god for indies and such as that is mostly what I play these days. Heck just look at my most anticipated list for 2015. I believe 7 of the 10 are indies and could of been more.

TPS games are still holding my interests as they tend to allow for other gameplay dynamics and just have a different style about them. But it seems to take some sort of catch to keep me going even in those. Tomb Raiders first 2 hours or so were incredible. But as soon as the game turned into just another run and gun shooter with bad crafting mechanics and fetch shit quests it got turned off and read the rest of the story on Wikipedia.

Rant over. But just curious if anyone else finds themselves in the same type of gaming mode.

Opposite. Finished Fry Cry 3 and Dead Rising 3. Wanted something more focused with level designs instead of an open world. Finished Wolfenstein and Evil Within. Now I want something like Killing Floor. Just give me a loading screen's worth of background before the arena and let loose. Basically a really lean shooter.

Metro Redux is awesome but probably not the best example.

terrisus, what genre do you prefer? I'm assuming role playing RPGs based on your avatar. Maybe you should try some indie western ones? Divinity Original Sin is pretty great, for example.

Yeah, traditional turn-based JRPGs are my favorites.

For a general idea of my tastes, here's a "Top 200" list I did around a decade ago.

There are still some new games that I enjoy (I should update that list one of these days), just, not as many of them, and none of them are FPSs.

If the Aussie dedis come to this party reliably at full game release my active friends list will instantly all jump to Halo and stay there for a looong time.

I kinda forget how much I don't enjoy shooters every so often, then get a shooter and go, "Oh yeah, I don't like these games." Most recently happened with Fallout 4.

I do occasionally enjoy a Far Cry: Blood Dragon or co-op Halo, though. I'm not sure what it is that makes some shooters absolutely bore me to tears while I really enjoy others.

I came into agree, outside of Destiny and (wait for it) I'm done with the whole FPS thing... I almost wanted to agree with the OP until he dissed which was to me, best game of the year (wolfenstein)

Surprise hit, great great story, amazing game play, couldn't get enough of wolfenstein, have no idea what he is talking about

The problem I have is FPS seem to be primarily walk into area, shoot a thousand bullets, move to next area, repeat.

I've always wanted an FPS to mimic reality. Maybe you kill 20 people the whole game, and the gameplay is based around strategy and getting into position and whatever else takes some intelligent thought.

I would agree with OP, but games like Titanfall and Halo 5 actually revive my hope for this genre on consoles at least. I just hope there are more developers that try to make a game built for high level play but still can be played casually like CoD4 or the older BF games and that SP FPS games try to flesh out the genre that is dying for some kind of progressing.

I was actually saying it was quite good. But despite that I was bored to tears and uninterested. The quality of the package and my lack of engagement into it kind of sealed the deal for me when it comes to this thought that the genre as a whole just doesn't do it for me anymore. When even the high quality products within a genre end up making me shrug, it's a pretty good sign

Yep. I lived on them on the PC in the 90's and in the early 00's I even played them on consoles and around perhaps 2004 or so I was just done. I cannot stand them now. Literally overdosed on an entire fucking genre.

I find it amazing that such a thing is even possible. Its painful too because there are so fucking many of them.... it begins to grate; that trend is starting to fade though THANKFULLY....

Last gen it was just FPS after FPS after FPS and I was a bitter asshole throughout because of it.

Yeah, I can definitely feel the OP's pain. I think the genre is vastly oversaturated and it has been like that for a multitude of years. I might still play one occasionally and even have some fun, but there are way, way, way too many of them with no signs of slowing down. I feel like something really needs to change to make them more distinguishable from each other or someone needs to really try to reinvigorate the genre with some innovation or something imo. My primary problem with the majorityt of them is, most of them play and look disturbingly similar which isn't a good thing for me when there are an abundance of them. People can say what they want about JPRG's or RPGS's in general, but most of them do play and look different form each other. I'm still going to play Wolfenstein in my backlog and most likely enjoy it though because it looks awesome.

I've lost interest in military shooters entirely. They, well, just feel so cookie cutter these days.

I think the genre needs its 'next big thing' to shake things up. Maybe it's time to revive some older series with a fresh coat of paint or something. The New UT has promise, if they can recapture the old fun. I'd love to see a new Hexen or such as well.

Done with FPS Shooters? You should check out The Order 1886. It's a TPS shooter from RAD at Dawn.
The Order look terrific but play like the same shit as always, with shooting gallery AI and very basic and confusing stealth mechanics.

Fps needs more gameplay, levels where you also need to think a little bit, and not just a silly carnage that is good on certain games but not in every games

I understand what you are saying, but there are modern FPS games out there that don't follow the COD mould. 2007 alone gave us The Darkness, Crysis, Bioshock and STALKER. These are all very different approaches to a FPS.

That was probably the last real banner year for FPS variety, but I'd urge you to check out STALKER because that blew me away.

I just finished STALKER, and the problem here is that basically nothing since 2007 followed in the footsteps of that game or Crysis. That's the biggest tragedy of all in my opinion.

Another Crysis 1 is precisely what the genre needs in my opinion.

What FPS essentially is really just clicking on the bad guys. How long can the fun last? I really can't bring myself to play linear fps's anymore. Atleast in the multiplayer there might be some tactics envolved which makes it fun but campaigns? Not my thing.

EDIT: Again strictly talking about linear fps campaigns. STALKER, Battlefield, Titanfall I had great fun with these and more.

Far Cy 3 and 4 are'not so far away from Crysis 1 in terms of gameplay. There's no power management of the suit but the open world approach still there.

Btw, GTAV in first person fell into the category?

Have you ever tried sniping things at long range in STALKER? There is actual projectile physics to factor in. It is extremely satisfying to headshot an enemy by aiming up and away to factor in drop and wind speed. That is something I haven't experienced in any other shooter.

Play a tactical shooter like SWAT 4 where it's more about subduing and cuffing enemies than killing everyone which would make you lose points and fail a mission. Deck your crew with all paintguns, door wedges, optiwands, flash bangs and go to town.

welcome to the boat op, ive been in it since 2010, albeit this year i played fallout 3/new vegas, condemned, and far cry 4 which have been fun, but the latter was free and i wouldn't have bought it on my own, i also play it more like a stealth game anyways, although the gun play is fun, fallout is more for exploration and atmosphere, and you can switch from 3rd person to first person in fallout, i also liked condemned criminal origins but that was for its creepy atmosphere and i bashed more skulls in with blunt objects than i did shoot

I haven't played an FPS in a long time (since Halo 3). I used to really enjoy them, but I guess I don't get the instant gratification of killing someone with a gun in a game like I used to. Will still ocassionally hop on Halo though because I just love the way those games play.

i dont like FPS usually, but wolfenstein was fantastic and im really surprised how good the campaign is for COD AW. It is so much better than the BF campaign - really polished and with an interesting story.

I thought I was done after Titanfall and Destiny but Halo 5 beta has sucked me back in.
I'm definitely taking a complete break until Halo 5 releases though.

I disagree with the OP. Now that I got Far Cry 4 and Wolfenstein The New Order, these are fantastic FPSs. If single player FPSs become more of a norm we would have a great variety of FPSs instead of the multiplayer-focused games which seem to not have anything else to show that is innovative other than improving what's already there.

OP, if you happen to have a 360 or PS3 you may want to give Condemned: Criminal Origins a try. I'm not a fan of FPS's, or games with first person perspective view. But I have to give credit where credit is due. One of the best games from last gen. And one of the most underrated in gaming history, which is shameful.

I still play some single-player shooters (Bioshock, Metro, Wolfenstein...) but yeah, I'm kind of tired too. They are just too homogeneous for me now, at least on consoles. Every game has the same shit: regen health, sprint, ADS (even Halo has that shit now) xp progression systems, perks, killstreaks...

There are some FPS's I still love, but they are on PC (where not all shooters have been infected with those awful "modern" systems/mechanics, thankfully)

Halo killed the genre. Once every game tried to be the halo killer it was all over.
Nah, Halo didn't kill the genre. Every developer trying to follow the leader (and the extreme homogenization that caused) did.

Seriously, when Halo got popular, suddenly every game had to have shields/health regen, two weapon limit, dedicated buttons for melee and grenades... Then, when CoD4 got popular, every game had to have ADS, sprint, killstreaks, perks, xp progression systems... Who cares about variety, right? SMH.
