I Think I'm Ready for Another Guitar Hero

I was thinking the exact same thing yesterday. I've never bought a guitar hero game (well.. the DS one lol) but I rocked the shit out of it at my friend's house.

The boxart's already done.

Has this boxart ever been explained? The game is an R-Type like space shooter.

I'm still sour DJ Hero didn't do very well. Was holding out for a straight up "Trance Hero" at some point.

I'm pissed too. I actually played 2 first, still haven't even opened 1 I think. But I got pretty dang good at it, couldn't play on Expert to save my life though. I found the soundtrack somewhere too and listened to it for months because some of those remixes were fuckin GODLY.

I think some people were soured on DJ Hero due to the legal shenanigans surrounding it's release. So it was kind of weighed down on release.

Beatles Rock Band is easily the most well done game released during the music game era. They created special videos/scenes for each individual song and it is amazing. Such a shame the game failed. Both companies over did it if you ask me. Band Hero? Lego Rock Band? How the hell did that even happen?

Still got my PS3 Beatles Rock Band game, guitar, and mic for whenever I feel the urge to play. Will probably get Aerosmith too.

The keyboard in RB3 was one of my greatest memories in this past generation. So many awesome random classics, including tons of Queen and Billy Joel. It's such a shame that it ended before they managed to release much of Dire Straits, Toto or Chicago.

And I'm probably alone in wanting these.

I'd definitely be up for one, especially one that was a bit more game-y and took itself less seriously in terms of trying to simulate playing music/appealing to hardcores, but I think peripherals are dead overall.

Nope.

I'm still sad we never got fucking Africa

Had this exact situation a few days ago. My wife actually ran out and bought a GH guitar (NEVER use the RB guitars. Not even once) just to play some RB3. So, soooo good. We've spent hundreds of dollars on peripherals and DLC, and it would be a damn crime if it all gets washed away by server shutdowns.

Activision truly ruined the genre though. There was a one year span where they put out three or four different music games. None of them even matched RB1 in quality.

Harmonix should focus on bringing it to this gen when they're done making their rhythm FPS, which is a whole other can of worms.

I'd love another Guitar Hero, but I don't think we'll ever recapture the flame of the glory days that were Rock Band 1 / Guitar Hero 3. Sure RB3's the best one, but the love for the series was in full swing when GH3/RB1 were fresh.

Damn, I remember those days... I was the one who "invested" £130 in Rock Band, we had hours and hours and hours of fun with it. Worth every penny.
I spent a hell of a lot more than that. Imported an NTSC 360 and full Rock Band kit to Australia shortly after release in the US. Definitely got my moneys worth, man did we spend some time on that.....

I don't think Guitar Hero killed the genre, nor did Rock Band. The novelty just wore off, that's all. I played every release and loved it, but that's just what hardcore fans of a genre do.

Guitar Hero? No. Rock Band? Yes.

Just much preferred the general feel and aesthetics of the Rock Band games, plus they supported it much better.

I finally just got up the will to give all our instruments away. For me, Guitar Hero died a painful death. Guitar Hero II was the absolute pinnacle. Starting with Guitar Hero 3 they were pure garbage. Rock Band was cool, but I never enjoyed the other instruments other than guitar.

I've put so many hours into Guitar Hero I'm 100% ready for a new one. I was just talking to a friend last night about how we were both ready to dive back in.

Warriors of Rock was so much fun. Games need more metal for some serious fun guitar charts. Fury of the Storm was a fucking blast.

I feel they could do well by stepping away from the full 5+ minute songs, and to a system more like DDR/IIDX with shorter songs, and less reliance on "realistic" (5 buttons lel) charts, so that they can concentrate on songs that are fun to play.

I've put a thousand hours minimum in to GH/RB and really the only way it's fun now is by going through on practice mode and just picking out the solos, rather than chugging through a boring repetitive riff for 3 mins to get to the 30 second fun part.

It's kind of a shame that Rock Band and Guitar Hero are so interchangeable with the general population. I don't want another Guitar Hero. They chose iteration over innovation. And recently they decided to completely shut down their DLC store instead of renewing licenses.

I can't ignore that Rock Band was the game to introduce drums, vocals, guitar, and bass all playable at once. And Rock Band 3 went even further with three-part harmonies and the keyboard. I also can't ignore that Rock Band was the one to introduce a la carte DLC, with $2 songs and optional discounted $5.49 three-packs. This was at the time Guitar Hero was still forcing you to buy three-packs that cost $6.25 if you wanted one of the DLC songs (and these were songs you could only play on guitar/bass, while Rock Band offered twice the number of playable instruments). And I can't ignore that even after Rock Band stopped creating new DLC a year ago, they continue renewing the DLC licensing so that people, especially latecomers, will still be able to buy songs for the game. Their run of weekly DLC was insane, and I'm not sure any other company in the last generation came close to supporting their games with that much content.

I lost interest in the Guitar Hero franchise after the second game. They were playing catch-up to Rock Band the whole time once that game hit, and they never even got close.

Right on. RB1-3 did it right. They could have skipped Lego, and the RB band games, however. Activision completely mishandled the IP and accelerated the genre's unfortunate demise with their shortsightedness.

Who else would be up for a return of Guitar Hero? I would personally want Guitar Hero : Iron Maiden or something like that.

I love Maiden with a passion, but I don't want Activision doing anything else with the genre.

Hey, y'all, I got what you need right here:

I have the first game in this series and I never looked back at the fake-guitar games. Great game AND learn an awesome skill you can use in real life? Way better.

Yeah, instead of playing other people's songs, you learn how to to play other people's songs.

Not only do many of us Rock Band / GH players play both those games and Rocksmith, they aren't working in opposition to each other.

If I want a guitar teaching tool that lets you play along with mp3s and a limited selection of expensive songs I'll pick that up. Or maybe for less money just the mp3s and tabs.

If I want a game I can pick up and play either by myself or with friends with no musical skill, I'll choose Rock Band.

I want a next gen Rock Band, that game was one of the best this gen. Such a pity Activision ruined the genre with their 10 GH games a year.

I spent so much money on Rock Band....

I'd love a next gen one though. An all new fresh start.

I'm only interested in another guitar game if it has dozens of songs from bands I like. Most of the songs on the RB3 disc were a chore to play thru, and I'm never going to do that again.

I think the thread title has a typo; should be spelled "Rock Band". And yes, that would be awesome.

The next big music game should use the Karaoke 360 approach and charge for access to the entire song catalog instead of piecemeal DLC releases. Or, better yet, both.

I would love a new rock band, but I fear at this point my music collection will be left in the dust. For the time being, c3 customs and rock band harmony project are filling that need every Friday.

Though I really only find myself playing pro keys and vocals now...

If it returns, a subscription model would be ideal.
