I think I've discovered the best "modern" instrumental band.

Hidiria Spacefolk - this Finnish band plays instrumental space rock like Ozric Tentacles but rock and groove harder. I love their two live albums, but I can't find those on Youtube so I'll link their latest album Astronautica.

Listening to this now. I like it.

This thread has kept me busy the last 2 hours. Some awesome stuff here.

My ears hurt from my headphones being on for so long. Some awesome bands here. You're awesome, GAF.

Bohren & der club of gore is amazing!

Dolores is really, really good.

On the math rockier side of instrumental music I'd like to recommend Adebisi Shank.

Black Earth > Sunset Mission

I think they're all great. Dolores has a beguiling melancholic quality, Black Earth is bleak as fuck and Sunset Mission is essentially the best detective movie soundtrack ever.

If I had to rank them though:

Sunset Mission > Dolores > Black Earth

I haven't listened to their other albums as much though. Gotta get on that.

No mention of Holy Fuck? Either they don't belong, I'm in the wrong thread, or I'm an outlier.

Royal Gregory live

Personal favorite
Lovely Allen live

Another favorite of theirs
Latin America live

Old friend from work got me into this band and tons of other stuff I never would have listened to otherwise. If anyone is curious about their particular style and such (from Wiki but I've seen it elsewhere too):

The band uses live instrumentation and miscellaneous instruments and non-instruments (including a 35 mm film synchronizer, toy keyboards and toy phaser guns) to achieve electronic-sounding effects without the use of laptops or programmed backing tracks.[2] According to Pitchfork Media, "The band was formed with the intent of creating the equivalent of modern electronic music without actually using the techniques—looping, splicing, programming and the like—of that music."[3]

They're pretty heavy and really geared towards music nerds, but I can't think of a more "modern" instrumental band than Animals as Leaders. They are the very definition of progressive and fresh, from their songwriting to the actual techniques being pioneered on guitar by Tosin Abasi.

That being said, never heard Orzic Tentacles before and i'm really digging the linked track, so thanks.
My MAN. AAL are so good - really amazing musicians. Matt is no slouch on the drums either.

So much better instrumental music in Post Rock/Metal, with a lot of it posted in this thread (Tortoise, GY!BY, etc.)

You need some Scale the Summit, Russian Circles, Pelican, Blotted Science, Cloudkicker, and more (I'm too lazy to list off the rock).

But damn do I love "Spirals in Hyperspace."

edit: You need to check out "Maybeshewill" and the first "And So I Watch You From Afar..." album.

Related to Maybeshewill, I love the new Waking Aida record (I think Maybe...'s guitarist recorded it).

UK underground instrumental scene represent!

Yea, I found out about Ozric Tentacles about a year ago and couldn't stop listening to all of their albums. Some really amazing stuff packed in there....I wish they'd come to the US so I could see them live. They're like a more raw rockin version of Shpongle.

Check out Eat Static - ex- Ozric members who went the Shpongle (psybient/pystrance) route.

Thanks, I'm gonna check them out right now as I have some time...I think you may have even recommended them to me in that psybient thread when I had the same Ozric revelation as OP but I forgot to listen to them :P

Great suggestions (especially Toe), but I'm going to suggest Friendship Time – a band that was set to release its debut (and only) album in 1975, but due to a number of complications with the group breaking up, didn't release it until 2004. Not sure if I'd call it top 10 for instrumental, but it's just really, really good prog.

The only problem, of course, is that there's next to nothing written about them on the internet.

I am convinced now that Ozric Tentacles is the best instrumental band ever.

I've been listening to a lot of their albums and they just blow my mind each and every time.

Bump time!

OT recently released their latest album, "technicians of the sacred". Listening to it right now, and of course it's just mind blowing.

GOAT!

It's got some great songs. I personally like Paper Monkeys a little more overall in regards to their newer stuff, but Technicians of the Sacred is still pretty amazing. Tentacles are touring in the U.S now, bummed that they aren't coming to my area.

I'm still not finished with the album, but I can never pick one album as a favorite, they're are so good.
