I think Pirating is under-appreciated in the gaming industry.

I'm not referring to actual video game piracy. Please stay on topic.

While there are obvious exceptions, I feel as if that Pirating as a theme is something that's largely ignored by developers which is both interesting and sad at the same time. While there are games that have the elements of pirating like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2, and Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, there's very few games that actually go through the whole nine yards of pirating with things like smuggling, large-scale seafare battles, heavy tropical exploration, evading the navy/nautical authorities. The last good pirate game I've played was Sid Meier's Pirates! and the Monkey Island titles.

Then Armada of the Damned was announced. I admit I'm not the biggest PotC fan, but the premise, footage and artwork of the game before it was canned sounded amazzzing. The pirate game of my dreams. Then Propaganda got shut down! :D

But, I digress; GAF, I'm looking for a good swashbuckling time. i've been looking at Risen 2 because it's in my Steam library and supposedly it's heavily pirate thtmeed. Should I pick it up?

Black Flag is the best Assassin's Creed game that I've played, I've only played 3, Black Flag, and Unity I will say but it is a damn good game and I hope they make a Black Flag 2!

I heard Rogue was more of a Black Flag 2 than Unity.

Assassins Creed only worked so well, and ther was another open world Pirate themed game...Ah, risen 3. Though to be honest I think the issue with pirates is that people don't want to take the time to design on ship and off ship mechanics for the game. It was easy for say, Assassins Creed since they already had them in game, but it would be a lot of work for a developer. I would loove to see a true to form Pirate game though.

Thread title got me.

I'd love a Bioware style pirate RPG. Black Flag wet my appetite but it was stuck in the minutaie of Assassin's Creed.

That title. I was thinking this was going to be an account suicide thread.

But yeah, I agree with you OP. We need more pirates and sailing in games.

Go play AC2. Its pretty damn good.

As to the title, incredible bait there.

As to the topic: I missed Sea Dogs tremendously, and the only game to come out and capture some of the same gloriousness was Black Flag. They should make that game into a series.

I enjoyed Risen 2 somewhat, but it's janky. Risen 1's supposedly better but a bit less piratey.

Personally, I don't think the ideal Pirate game has ever been made, which bums me out.

I WOULD like a full scale One Piece title. Sailing the multiple Blues and Lines as an unnamed Pirate/Marine private with a special devil fruit power

Agreed, I absolutely loved Black Flag on PS4!

If you have access to a PS3 or 360, be sure to check out AC: Rogue - it's essentially Black Flag 2 with a little less emphasis on the pirate-themes.
I'm enjoying it quite a bit on PS3 but I will totally double-dip if it ever gets a PS4 remaster! :D

Just because your first line of text is "THIS IS NOT WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT" does not mean clicking your thread bait title was not annoying.

That being said, I did like Black Flag a lot and wouldn't mind more variations on it.

What's funny is I've been saying this exact same thing about all media. Other than the Pirates of the Caribbean and Black Sails, I can't think of any other pirate movie/TV show, let alone video games.

Oh wow, I thought this was about copyright infringement.

Are we allowed to promote piracy on NeoGAF? Not like.. piracy sites. But I mean.. ethical conversations about piracy?

Risen 2 has pirates. Raven's Cry also has pirates. It's due to release late January although it has been delayed at least three times so who knows.

That click bait thread title.

Always wanted to play Galleon that was on the Xbox back in the day but by the time it came out I forgot about it without use of the internet. AC: IV was solid though, best AC.

Thought this would be a thread on how pirates are the ones saving the games industry with game preservation. Freaking click bait.

Anyway I imagine Ubisoft is cooking up a pirate game.

I grew up in the Caribbean, raised on stories of pirates. Every new beach or cove we'd visit, I'd imagine what smuggling activity passing pirates might have gotten up to there in the past.

So yeah, I love pirates and it drives me completely crazy that they're so underused. They were real, dammit, and the drama and stories flow naturally from pirating. No surprise that Sid Meiers's Pirates, Wind Waker and Black Flag are three of my favourite games of all time.

At this stage I'll buy almost anything with a proper pirate or sailing theme. I hated AC3 more than anything, but once I learned that you'd be able to visit Nassau in AC4 as a pirate I was ready to pay around 150 bucks for that game if necessary.

More pirates, please.

EDIT: How did I even forget Skies of Arcadia, one of my top 3 RPGs.

Currently playing Black Flag and I LOVE it! I wish it wasnt an assasins creed game.. Pirates Creed!

Even downloaded the pirate shanties so I play them while I drive to work.

QE: OH and we need more Monkey Island

That isn't really what I'm looking for, and I'm in the minority who believes that SoA is a bad game.
*record scratch*

Wait, what? Admittedly, the most important part of the game (gameplay) is generic turn based RPG garbage, but everything else is amazing! How can it be a bad game?

Along with finding the gameplay boring, I just don't care for the characters, story, or music.

Then I might have played the bad version apparently. GCN.

I agree with the OP, I've always loved the pirate theme, even the real history of pirates. I would love a fully fleshed pirate game.

How about "ninja-ing" as under appreciated? Tenchu's dead, Ninja Gaiden is dead (and set in modern times), not sure Goemon qualifies as ninja but it's also dead.

I don't remember ever playing a modern game with a realistic depiction of ninjas in a historically accurate setting.

Yes, I'm counter argumenting Ubisoft's reasons for no Assassin's Creed in feudal Japan.

Risen 3 is waaaay better than Risen 2, and is just as choc full of pirates. I've been playing it lately and it's fun. Play that over Risen 2- runs better as well

Hmm....Shinobido? Total War: Shogun?

I didn't even know there was a Risen 3 either.

I agree. I think one of the most appealing aspects a pirate game can offer is the easily justifiable anti-hero, which seems like on of the most people protagonist archetypes in gaming.

Plus sea shanties rock.

Came out this year. Supposedly the console versions are shit, but the PC version is pretty cool. It's a pirate RPG. I tried Risen 2 but it's so damn clunky and awkward. Risen 3 has some jank to it as well, but it's miles better. I think it's like $ 30 on Steam.

Risen 2 i somewhat enjoyed it but i wouldn't recommend it either.
Also i didn't felt it captured the pirate theme that well at all.
