I think this next generation is going to be the biggest jump since moving to 3D.

I don't think so. Next-gen consoles will bring what mid to high-end PCs of today are capable of to a closed box hardware. The huge jump I am expecting is the shift of game development from single player oriented to F2Ps, MMOs or socially interactive games. It will be more about building a community around the game than creating a single player experience that will be worth your every penny.

Yeah, I think it's going to be one massive leap.

I don't mean to be a prick, but we never really has 480p on a large scale... PC gamers maybe, but very few people had a VGA cable for the Dreamcast or a set of Component cables for the PS2.

Moving to 3D... What do you mean exactly? The SNES had some pretty impressive 3D graphics, and actually we all saw as Model 2 looked marginally better than what the PS2 or Dreamcast was able to churn out for long time before we had those systems at home.

Anyway, my opinion is that next gen is a huge difference in graphics but that's pretty much it. Next gen isn't impressing me as when I first saw moving hair of individual fingers etc. or heck, the ability to cast shadows with a flash light -- better yet, blocking a door using a physics engine to guard from an enemy.

Nothing, absolutely nothing of next gen is making me feel like that. But that's mostly because it can't anymore. Graphics have bottom photo-realistic to the point that when I first loaded up the Forza Horizon demo I didn't know when it switched to real time -- when I was in the water at the very beginning of BioShock I thought I could feel the weight of the water and I thought I could taste the salt in my mouth as the wave crashed over me.

In my opinion, the future of gaming comes with how we interact with them. I may sound like I'm talking about the Kinect 2.0 as a big fanboy, maybe I do think that in a sense, but don't underestimate how 3D allowed us to make more emotional connections to games. That was a huge step which allowed for different kinds of narratives to be told and gamers to experience different kinds of emotions. On a gameplay standpoint, 3D gave us the ability to use techniques that weren't simply bound to a button or heavily scripting, it allowed for a much more dynamic way to play.

Next gen is not as big of a step.
