Well....I paid 20 out of 25 bucks for a cab last year that had 3 other people in it (2 girls paid zip, the other dude paid 5)...still haunts me.

We messed up and jumped into some higher class cab (Can't remember what it was called) without really thinking, bill came up as like 22 bucks and I asked if that included tip (It didn't).....:lol

Probably not an expensive trip in most circumstances but I was expecting to pay like 4 bones damnit!

i've tipped that much intentionally before, though never on an 8$ drink.

i had a bartender i that i got along really well with, and he'd always just give me drinks, and so i'd just tip him the full price of the drink and a bit more.

Damn man... just... damn O.o

A 5 minute cab ride where I live is about 15 bucks minimum, and that is in the dingiest crappy cab with a driver who doesn't speak english well and will probably kill you.

This isn't LA or anything either, its a shithole place with about 65K people

No if they are completely terrible no tip is ok. For me competent earns 10 or 15%. Good gets 20%. It's part of the service industry ecosystem in the states, servers need tips to make a living. Since everyone is paid with the expectation they actually perform their job, getting tipped for being competent makes sense in this case because tips are(through law) factored into their compensation.

A lot of servers expect it, I have friends that are servers and are former servers and basically it is divided by

The good servers (and former servers) -> You tip good service, you REWARD great service. Its just how it goes.

The terrible servers -> OMG I DIDN'T GET ENOUGH IN TIPS TODAY, LIKE ALL I WANTED TO DO TODAY WAS SERVE PEOPLE FOOD OMG... I'VE GOT BETTER THINGS TO DO I ONLY DO THIS JOB FOR THE TIPS (actual quote, slightly changed because of memory but that is about how it went. Also this isn't a teenage girl we are talking about)

Yeah tipping sucks! I want to pay more for my food and give servers no incentive to be competent at their job!

Interesting that at every country I've ever been to where tipping is not part of the culture the service always seems to be better somehow.

Go and get it back. CYE hilarity will ensue!

Oh and what is it with you Americans and all the tipping issues...

EDIT: Well in this instance I understand that your pissed, but there is a thread about tips every other week it seems.

Tipping is a major part of expenditure in the US I'm guessing and an area where many a social faux pas can occur. It's only natural it gets a lot of attention.

I wanted to laugh at an american and poke fun at their silly currency that is simply BEGGING for problems like this.

yay for money of different colours and larger denominations being physically larger.

That still didn't stop me from giving a 100 change instead of 5 when I used to deliver pizza in NZ as a student.

You think that sucks? How about when you're running a tab and the tip alone comes to at least $100 and many of the fuckers who helped run it up have split already.

Hopefully you stayed there awhile. Bartenders will usually show their appreciation for stuff like that.

That they will. When I drank every day at this hole-in-wall bar, I tipped well, bartender lady would give me free cocktails, beer, she would refill my cup when I wasn't looking. It was pretty cool.

I hate having to split bills with friends. HATE IT.

Good for you. And if you are really going to regret unintentionally spending $24 you probably shouldn't be going out in the first place.

Dirty poor.

PS: You're a cheap fuck.

No actually I live in one of the most expensive countries in the world. But without tipping. And with service in every store that outclasses anything I have paid extra for in other parts of the world.

I win.

I once tipped 35 euros by saying "keep the change".
I thought I had given him 20 instead of 50... and when I realized my mistake, the delivery guy was already gone. dang

Tipped 12 bucks once on 20 some tab and was pissed off. I didn't really pay attention but also thought it was wrong because the place put gratuity on the check and I didn't realize it since I was talking and not really caring about the price at the time. I know gratuity is added in some places, but never saw it done on a check for only 2 fucking people.

After a few issues we've finally started splitting the bills evenly since a certain couple skimps on the bill every single time.
The worst was when we had a large group at dinner where the receipt went around the table and everyone put in their fair share and some a little extra only to have the bill finish up at the cheap couple. He takes his credit card out and tells the waiter to put on what exactly was left on the receipt owed to the cent, which was at least $15 less than what they had actually owed since some people in our group are generous tippers.
Although the time previously was pretty bad when she gave the money for their amount owed and asked for 1.50 back. We've got a group of at least 12. The person collecting is dealing with a $300 receipt, doesn't have any change, and when she tells her that, she asks for $2 back instead. And then we were somehow $20 short and the person collecting ends up tossing in an extra $20 on her own just to get it over with.

Well, at least you never have to worry about extra unpleasant ingredients in your food any time you order from them. Although the next time a delivery guy from that place came back, he'd probably be really disappointed after you were labeled a huge tipper.

But €20 is blue and €50 is orange. How the fuck? €10 and €50 i can understand (although the 50 is huuuge in comparison)

I would hate to have all the notes the same colour that's for sure.

so i just woke up and checked my wallet. i actually tipped about 35$

*bangs head*
How much did you drink now?

And how do you do this when the money is color coded? I mean, its hard enough to do in the US where they have different dead guys on it.

Yeah, no matter how drunk I've gotten, it's never happened. But I also have never said "Keep the change."

Even then, if he gave her a 20 and four 5s, what did he think he was giving? Four 5s and a 1? That's still an $13 tip on an $8 pitcher.

when i was in JFK coming back from the states me and my friend got a burger king for lunch and while there i went though my wallet and bag to find all my american notes to either change up or spend at the airport.. i got it all together and counted out 28 $1bills and put them on the meal tray. We went off to the shop and I realised.. shit, i left my 28 bucks on the tray.. i went back and the tray was gone.. either the cleaner got a nice tip or there was a bin full of dollars.. either way I wasnt up for chasing it up and i left 28 dollars poorer.

I once tipped that much on purpose at a nice restaurant. The waitress actually came back and asked me "are you sure??". Later on I thought I should have took that shit out of her hand and said "I guess not bitch".

i didnt buy drinks the rest of the night.

Oh well then $43 for a night when you got so drunk you weren't even able to tell notes apart isn't so bad. A round between some of my friends (4 of us) cost me €21 two nights ago. Worst thing is that not everyone offered back so I had to get a second round myself later that night and I went home pretty much sober :[

But how did you get $24 then? Did you not remember how much was in your wallet?
after paying, the girl i was with told me i tipped 24 dollars. she was trying to tell me as i paid but she was telling me what notes i was giving her and i couldnt do the math in my head (man i was dumb).

after i woke up, i realized how much i really paid.

Its always best to tip high initially, as bartenders remember that later in the evening. At a wedding recently I tipped 5 dollars for my first drink, and got shitloads of liquor later in the evening.

Instead of making yourself another customer the key is to make yourself memorable.

At a wedding? Might wanna expand on that a little bit?

:lol Ah, that makes sense then.
