I want a Macbook ...but do I need one?

I love my macbook pro but honestly I regret buying the retina. I cannot tell the difference between it and a regular screen.

Can't even understand how this is possible. Then again there are also people who claim they see no difference between DVD and blu-ray.

Worked it out in the funds to where I could get the 2599 MacBook Pro retina. Used a student discount to save $200 and ended up increasing the processor speed to the highest, only iffy thing is I got the 512gb HDD option, because 1TB was too expensive. Now the countdown to receiving it begins. It says estimated December 17th...is Apple overestimating just in case and get them out quicker or is this a realistic expected delivery?

i own a 11-inch air and last year's 13-inch non-retina pro, but i just got a 13-inch retina air yesterday and the difference in screen quality is absolutely insane. even the ability to scale to 1440 x 900-equivalent gives a huge boost to usability even if you're inexplicably able to notice the sharpness increase.

the main reason i got it was battery life, though. my air barely lasts three hours these days and the non-retina pro is a huge beast of a thing to take outdoors, whereas the 13-inch retina pro lasts forever while powering an amazing screen in a slim and fairly light body. i considered the haswell airs in june, but figured that something exactly like the current 13-inch retina pro would be along in autumn. very glad i waited, as it's certainly the most versatile mac i've ever owned.

plus i got a great deal online where i somehow ended up paying less for the 8GB RAM/256GB SSD model than i would have for the 4GB/128GB version at MSRP — or even for the comparably specced air. so yeah, pretty happy with my purchase.

anyone who buys the non-retina model at this point is on crack. the screen, SSD speed, battery life, and thinner/lighter design are all colossal improvements on the vanilla pro, and for only $100 more.

I really want an air for the lightness, but hope they bring out a retina model.

Otherwise I might just pick up a 13 inch pro retina early next year.

I ordered mine on Friday and the estimated delivery is jan 7th 2014. Its a 13 inch 16gb. Not sure why its takes that long.

I have a 2010 pro, switching to Mac was best thing i've done really can't see myself ever switching back. Want to upgrade to a 11" air next might wait if I can and see what the 2014 brings

After spending hours upon hours dealing with my girlfriends new Windows 8 laptop. I threw shit into the wind and bought a 13" macbook pro retina late 2013. It has so far been very impressive. However:

The file management is sub windows 7.
The window size management is sub windows 7.
Price was 2.5x equivalent microsoft laptop :S
Aluminium sharp edge hurts my wrists sometimes.

Everything else is on par or superior. Battery life, screen, ease of use, and general use. Would very much recommend over a Windows 8 laptop. Possibly not a Windows 7 one ... but I couldn't find any Windows 7 laptops.

If there's already a laptop available, don't buy a Macbook. For web browsing and any app stuff it's much nicer just to use the iPhone or the iPad.

To me the laptop has become a necessity in terms of having to write some longer emails and stuff. But that's only now and then. For everything else, I'll go with my phone or the tablet. More comfy, portable and can be used anywhere. In my opinion the laptop is well on its way into becoming a secondary device.

The money wasted on a Macbook means you'll use the phone and tablet less. Also, you've wasted those money for upgrading your phone and tablet too.

What? Web browsing and typing on a phone is far inferior to doing it on a laptop.

The trackpad alone is worth the buy.

Goddamit, I HATE going on any other laptop because of the atrocious trackpads, AND no gestures? GTFO.

Macbook all day, every day.

Yes, typing is superior with a keyboard. But unless you feel the need to comment and discuss everything you read on the internet, it's probably worth to sacrifice the keyboard for mobility and comfortable use (being on the go, in the couch, etc.)

which one? having a difficult time thinking of a $500 windows laptop worth a damn, let alone one on par with a retina macbook pro.

this is coming from someone who paid that much for a surface 2.

Why the fuck computer manufacturers haven't adopted apple's naming scheme is beyond me.
Oh the best laptop right now is Sony ZX1022B-32 or Asus BB10-A. That's fucking dumb.

It is a little sad, but in my defense the UX31(also known as Zenbook) line is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to ultrabooks(refer to drool pic below) and it's been around for years now.

One thing I wouldn't want to happen though is the adoption of completely misleading and idiotic naming schemes e.g. "Retina"

This! This is the only reason why I would spend a little bit more on a macbook. Its amazing and destroys every other laptops track pads.

Hey look another person who hasn't used a Zenbook. I'd give the macbook trackpad a score of 90%(it's not PERFECT), and the zenbook a score of %89. That's hardly destroying.

I was in the same boat as you, just sold my MacBook Air. I have a iphone5, iPad air and a beastly gaming PC. Realized the MacBook Air was overkill. Loved every minute with it, but the iPad pretty much made the laptop redundant. Best laptop I've ever owned btw

I'd love to know what you'd consider a 100%. Also what you think is wrong with the Magic Trackpad to justify a 10% loss.

Depends on the context. I prefer browsing in bed right before I nod off. I typically do that best on a phone or tablet.

But for general productivity and work I prefer a laptop. But generally yea...laptops are better suited for those tasks. Especially multitasking.

Guys, what is the best solution: Parallels or Bootcamp?

Didn't have the need for parallels for a very long time but it had a workaround some years to use the same system on both solutions (parallels & bootcamp), I guess it still works and you get both whatever you need is.

I haven't used a trackpad yet that I'd consider 100%.

Is the magic trackpad just the macbook trackpad? What makes it magic? Anyways, it just feels off sometimes, jumpy occasionally, finicky, etc. Normal trackpad stuff.
