I want another Silent Hill game. Do you?

I've been watching the horrible Silent Hill movies lately (Revelations was beyond bad, but for some reason I still kind of enjoyed it), and it got me thinking about the series and whether or not the non-Team Silent entries were really as bad as they're made out to be, and if I want more, basically.

I thought Downpour and Homecoming were both okay. I probably liked Homecoming a bit more, but both games (while having pretty severe problems) were decent-to-good attempts on the SH setting. I only played a bit of Origins, and I never played the Wii game, but heard people really liked it.

So with E3 around the corner, I'm kind of hoping to see an announcement for a new entry, just cause. Then again, the trend has been that they are getting worse over time (how many times can you go back to Silent Hill before it just ceases to be interesting?).

So does GAF want another one, or no? Should the series just die at this point or is there enough room in your <3 for another visit?

I'd take a Kickstarter game by Team Silent first. Whatever they created would have more heart and soul than any Silent HIll sequel Konami could muster up.

I want another one as well, but I think Konami has just dropped the series at this point. Downpour didn't sell so well, so they probably don't want to try another SH title.

Last I heard of Konami doing something Silent Hill related, was SHO/SHSM being on PSN for the Vita in Europe.

Westerners have constantly proved that they don't have the ability to create Silent Hill stuff.

It's like a child pretending to be an adult. An imitation, the shell of a fancy car with none of what actually makes it move. It's a dish made simply by looking at a picture of a plate, without even having tasted the original.

I want a new Silent Hill, but only if it isn't like the more recent games. Shattered Memories has been the one bright spot in the Silent Hill series since the original 3. I'm not a huge fan of SH3, but that is because the storytelling is so unbalanced in it. It seems like you go hours upon hours without any story at all, going from set piece to set piece, only to have the last 30 minutes be bogged down by a flood of nonsensical information. All that said, though, I still think that 3 is better than The Room, Homecoming, Origins, or Downpour*.

*full disclosure, I played Downpour for a total of 10 minutes, and my game locked up, when I realized I'd have to sit through that long-ass intro again and I couldn't skip it, I said, "F this" and haven't touched it since.

If we ever get another Silent Hill game, we need some proper creature designers. Downpour was horrible in that regard because it made them too human. If you're going to put a human face on your monster, the presence of the face should be creepy, not how the face looks. Homecoming had some decent monster designs, so maybe look back at that for inspiration if you have to use a modern Silent Hill.

I love Shattered Memories, but I feel it's another beast entirely.

I don't know how you can write off all Western talent based on the efforts so far. I'm sure the right Western team could make a wonderful Silent Hill. Just as many Japanese teams would make shit Silent Hills.

Nope. The main story is pretty much over and the team with the original vision has dispersed. If they ever gather a group that talented again I'd rather they started a new title.

I felt that way for a while. Now I'm not sure if I want to stick by that feeling -- up to this point, attempts have been poor or are at least decent attempts with serious mistakes. But I think I'd rather live in a world where new developers are at least trying to make the space their own rather than one where SH just dies and nobody cares. To me it's always been up there with RE in terms of my excitement levels, so to leave that space completely feels wrong.

Strangely, the game that got me thinking about this again was Murdered: Soul Suspect. I loved walking around in Salem and when the game actually went for creepy it did so pretty well. If a game like Murdered is even possible to make in this age why the hell is it so hard to get Konami to bite for a reboot or re-envisonment of the original?

Just dump Pyramid Head. Seriously. Nobody cares (or wants to see) Pyramid Head any more.

Not if it doesn't involve a few key members of Team Silent. Otherwise, kill it.

Each Silent Hill game since 4 has missed the point behind what the series should be, and it's sad. Now that Huelett of (hopefully) off the franchise, maybe we can see some improvement.

- Give the series to a studio that is establish in the genre
- Give it back to Japan. Those guys are the BEST at horror.

Has nothing to do with westerners. Has everything to do with whoever developing it not being Sato, Ito, Yamaoka, Owaku, and Tsuboyama/Nakezawa/Toyama. Silent Hill is their collective dream.

It's like asking for more Da Vinci. Da Vinci's dead, man. Michelangelo's dead. Francis Bacon is toast.

All the lead designers/developers from SH1-4 or bust. The only non-OG dev I'd be interested in with SH is Remedy as they understand atmosphere.

I think I'm in the minority when I say I enjoyed Downpour. I enjoyed exploring the town at my own pace and fleeing as soon as the rain came. Only thing I hated was the enemy designs. I hope the same studio makes another one. I think they deserve another shot.

I do. I don't really even care at this point if it is some cheesy western effort, I like em in a "B game" sorta way. SM and 4 were the only ones I didn't really care for. Had fun with Origins, Homecoming and Downpour. But tbh I think SH is dead, current Konami doesn't give a fuck.

Need to try out BOM at some point. Oh, and tge second mocie is theeeeeeerrrrible xD.

Nope! The last good one came out more than ten years ago. Time to let it go.

The first three make a great trilogy of classics, each with different strengths. I think it is literally impossible to recapture that at this point.

Just let it be.

Yeah, Silent Hill on PS4 would be amazing in the right hands.

Silent Hill is based off of western horror, specifically Jacob's Ladder and the works of David Lynch. The problem isn't that western developers don't get horror, it's just that games like the earlier Silent Hill installments are not seen as profitable, so they change the formula to some weird hodgepodge of action and horror, making a mediocre product.

Another problem with the Silent Hill series was that it became a "series", which is why we see wanton use of old themes and archetypes in all the recent games. If Pyramid Head doesn't show up, you can bet a Pyramid Head-like figure will take his place because that's become expected of the series.

My ideal vision for the series is to stop calling back to other games. I don't need to know more about the cult, I don't need James's father wondering where his son and wife are, I don't need Travis picking up hitchhikers. To me, Silent Hill should be more like an anthology series where the only shared connection is Silent Hill itself. Silent Hill 3 and 4 really started connecting the series around certain events and it has made the series worse off for it.

Same with Pseudo Pyramid Heads. If you're going to make another pursuer, ditch the tall humanoid look and go with something completely new. Even something like a giant spider (Not biased).

Speaking of Pyramid Head, there's only one thing that should be under that helmet, and it's not a human face.

This series needs a long break and then be given to a studio with a proven track record of quality games outside of the horror genre.Let their talent be unleashed on a game type that they have yet had a chance to tackle. That being said, I've found enjoyment in every single title in the series except for Book of Memories, which I barely count as a game in the SH universe. My love for horror and the fact that SH 2 is one of the greatest games of all time, allows me to see past flaws in each title in the series and just enjoy myself with whatever approach the developer decided to take in creating a trip through Silent Hill. In fact, one title that I know gets a ton of divisive responses when brought up, Shattered Memories, happens to be one of my favorite games in the franchise. I loved it and I'm not ashamed to admit it. But, back on topic, I can wait 3 or 4 more years for a proper current gen SH. Something that truly takes advantage of the power of PS4/XBone.

Yes. The series hasn't gone off it's rocker like with RE. The latest one still at least try to maintain the gameplay and feel of the early ones.

Yes, definitely! I enjoyed all of them..... Yes, that's right, all of them.

(Aside from book of memories. I never played that one and pretend it doesn't exist)

Yeah, agreed. The cult stuff especially got carried away, but because people loved/feared Pyramid Head so much, suddenly he had to be in everything.

Silent Hill 2 was good *because* it stood so separately from SH1 on a plot/character level and was also very, very aesthetically different (no snow in the fog world, the dark world was totally different, no mention of white claudia, very different monster designs). I feel like every subsequent game tried to bring back something from the earlier games instead of standing on its own.
