I want more gritty 80's non fan service noncomedic anime

This is possibly the greatest thread on GAF. Kudos to you sir.

Two I suggest, since people have covered quite a bit.

Blood Reign: Curse of the Undead Yoma
Golgo 13 the tv series.

You may want to check out the second season of Grappler Baki. The animation quality isn't so hot, and the plot is, well, the whole season is one big tournament you draw the obvious conclusion, but there's plenty of bone-crunching brutal fighting, hell even the audience reacts in horror though some of it, so there's an added bonus.

Also, FotNS fans: How does the Raoh Gaiden stuff stack up to the original series?

It's too bad a lot of the older stuff the OP is looking for is exactly the kind of thing that either never made it to DVD in the first place, or has long since been discontinued.

There's countless disposable modern anime on DVD, but classics like First of the North Star went out of print way back when the format was new. It never did get a re-release, did it?

Hell, it's never even had an official subbed release as far as I know.

I read your post backwards, and was quite willing to agree with you, until this:

I keep trying to watch stuff you guys keep recommending to people like Planetes and Hajime No Ippo but I just can't deal with it.

Seriously, these shows are what you think is wrong with today's anime? I like crude, hand drawn, bloody gore-ridden slaughterfests as much as the next guy, but these shows are what you couldn't stand?!

There is not a facepalm.gif big enough for this post.

If you're talking about the new RAOH TV series, it's decent fun and you can find it subbed on youtube. I don't know who's doing the subs.

If you're talking about the OVA, I think it's pretty good, and it's nice to see some of the classic fights in "updated" animation.
However, some people think the new voices actors coupled with "bad art" have taken the soul of HnK from the new OVAs.
It's entirely subjective, so I suggest you check it out yourself, it's free on heartofmadness.

Also check out Souten no Ken, it's on HoM too and I think it's excellent although the budget doesn't seem to be that big and the anime was cut short to 25 episodes, but the manga is still running and being scanned.

No they're actually decent. I was was just trolling with those two picks, although the new recruit girl in Planetes is SO annoying. She needs to be locked up in the dungeons of Cassandra.

Also, colonydrop.com is the site for you.
Wow. This is the best site ever! "colonydrop", a fitting name :lol

Also, I get all teary eyed when watching Fist of the North Star just because of the pure awesomeness. Seriously, how can this show be so cool!!!?? it's too cool goddamnit!!! it's like tailor made for my tastes, everything about it is rad.

OP, you will enjoy Saint Seiya, if you can endure the low points till the Sanctuary arc.

Oh and yes, Planetes was boring shit, sorry. Why is it on all top lists in every anime site I cannot understand. Yes, it had a couple of moving scenes, but that's about it...

PS: If you tolerate robots, you have to watch Mazinkaiser and Shin Getter 2004. Old school shows with extra dose of gore, updated animation and stuff that matters like killing the bad guys.

I want an anime that is either as good as or surpasses Naoki Urusawa's Monster.

Sadly, this will never happen.

Monster is the greatest anime ever made.

What's up with Monster? I got to ep 15-20 or so and dropped it. It was too boring, slow, uneventful and predictable. Also 70+ ep lenght doesn't help.

This is the only thing I read. You are wrong. EDIT: After you watch the first season's 130 or so episodes you'll understand.

Also, Ashita no Joe is one of the best animes I've ever seen, tied with VOTOMS and HnK, you can watch it subbed on crunchyroll.
You should check it out.

Every single episode Kenshiro walks up to a town of happy, hardworking peasants that are being tortured by thugs that are part of the gang/army of whoever he's trying to find, he says some clever remark, and then punches their lights out. It also gets really bogged down in trying to explain every little thing like their battle auras, every pressure point, why they can fly, etc. All this logical explaining crap sucks, they're fucking POWERFUL FIGHTING GODS who gives a shit why blue energy waves are emanating off of them? All the backstory stuff is awesome though.

In the movie, not as much explaining is done. The mysteriousness makes them seem even MORE powerful. The animation is pretty sweet most of the time. The added part with him
being thrown off a cliff
is awesome. Lynn is more tolerable. Raoh seems way more powerful.
Rei was killed right in front of Kenshiro before the last battle, none of that 3 days crap
, I like it better without Toki muddling up the "who is the most powerful Hokuto" hierarchy battle. I like it when there's just a north, and a south, none of this crap about 6 guardians of nanto seiken with hokuto as the centerpiece or whatever the crap. The battle with shin wasn't as meaningful in the tv series.

The movie is an hour and a half of pure, crystallized awesome, while the tv show has a lot of ups and down. I'm only in the late 70's as far as episodes though, so I'll update this if I change my mind.

Edit: Oh yeah, and the music in the movie was awesome. "oh oh, standing in the heart of darkness, oh oh give me my life, give me my energy"

Think it was made in the 90's but it's still what you're looking for, the Jojo's Bizzare Adventure OVAs.

And Mad Bull 34, you cannot go wrong with that one.

I like shit like:

-Fist of the North Star (movie and tv show although the movie is better)
*gasp* how can you say this when the movie has no Kenshiro's beefy Jesus brother?

The TV series wipes it's ass with the movie. I know you made a post explaining why you like the movie better, but the TV series still wipes it ass with it.

First Planetes, then Monster. Ah.

Here's a couple of others that are worth seeing.

Angel Cop

Twilight of the Dark Master

Thread = Bookmarked.

I personally suggest GunGrave. First ep is shit, but it improves a lot during the show. Oh, and the ending is better than Cowboy Bebop's. Absolutely amazing.

And it has anime Al Pacino :lol

Genocyber
Guyver (the original OAV)
Cybercity Oedo 808
Devilman
Doomed Megalopolis

I think the above is what you're looking for.

EDIT: Damn you, jiji.
Ah, man, this plus 3x3 eyes was what made late night Channel 4 awesome in the 90's.

[edit]AAAAHHHHH Flashbacks to my youth... Legend of the Four Kings was also shown on Channel 4. It was much slower pace but still pretty interesting.

ctrl+f : afro samurai

wtf gaf.

The guy wants fucking bloodthirsty battles, more I'll NEVER FORGIVE YOU type of shit, then he should watch Afro Samurai.

It's got an awesome style, the music is done by RZA and Samuel Jackson voices it.

It's pure fucking awesome. And it's only 5 episodes long so you can watch it as a movie.
I came here to say this. Afro Samurai is pure old school anime. bloody, violent, incredibly drawn and just fucking OOZING with style.

It not from the 80's or 90's, but you might enjoy the Ultimate Hellsing OVAs, there are only 5 of them right now but I guess the only lowpoint is that they come out like one episode a year

Thank you. I've already thought it's odd that nobody has mentioned the Hellsing OVAs.

Basically I want stuff that's 100% hand drawn, preferably 80's or early 90's, tons of action and or ultraviolence. Probably all the stuff you guys hate now but loved when you first got into anime. I think current anime that I've tried to watch is mostly a clusterfuck of suck. I yearn for more over the top manliness, cheesy lines, and guys with super human abilities. I'm not a huge anime fan but i've seen stuff like princess mononoke and that kind of stuff is cool, but in a different way than the stuff i'm primarily looking for.

You might want to check out Excel Saga to see the "clusterfuck of suck" animes made fun of.

You did this to Planetes as well?

....

Maybe you're dumb? I don't know.

I won't derail this thread, though.

Take no offense. I merely jest.

Rei's laser fingers are the coolest anime weapon, ever.

Am I crazy, or is the FOTNS movie's English dub like... amazingly good? Every actor really sells their role, the dialog is never painful or cheesy, and there's so many classic lines. Why can't anime have bad ass dubs like that anymore?

Also, Uncle Phil as a giant metal skinned barbarian warlord.

Does anyone know the OAV that is similar to Ridley Scotts "Alien" movie? Where they are on some space ship and there is some sort of demon creature.

Area 88 OVA
Bastard!
Golgo 13 TV series (recent show, but awesome)
Riding Bean/Gunsmith Cats
Macross Plus
Dirty Pair
3x3 Eyes

Hmm, I don't know. I just think there are much better "serious" shows like, say, Last Exile or Wolf's Rain.

EDIT: Planetes is just a poor man's Patlabor.

I will say, this thread is definitely awesome and will try to see if some of these are on Netflix's watch it now section

Thanks again for the recommendation....hell I never even knew I actually liked this very specific genre of Anime until I really thought about!

I think that late 80 early '90 anime was the best stuff. The cool ninja, cyborgs, futuristic themes, the ultra violence, the super powerful protagonists, this is the kind of stuff that made anime so intriguing back then.

Nowadays it's all fruity ass stuff, crappy fluffy creatures, overhyped crap that is obviously aimed at kids (how exactly are some gaffers totally getting into the storylines of kids stuff like Naruto and whats not?!); and lets not forget the creepy lolifan friendly angle that animu has taken since the end of the '90.

A guy in a cab told me it had a couple of remasters/rereleases.
