I want to enjoy Ninja Gaiden.

I've had the game for a year. And I can't make it past the first level.

The white ninja is kicking my ass and it's not even close. I've probably played hundreds of videogames and I've never been this stumped this early in a game.

I'm trying not to go on Gamefaqs to avoid spoiling anything. What in the FUKK am I missing? The worst part about it is I let my brother borrow my XB for a few months and from his file, he's WAY passed me.

First 2-3 levels = hardest levels of Ninja Gaiden

Seriously

Ok maybe not the hardest but they were tough because the difficulty just jumps right at you and it takes a while to adjust to it

Go back to barbie themed games. Nah, I'm kidding you. This game is all about hand to screen reflexes. i.e. this game isn't for everybody.

Peace.

It's been a long ass time since I've played NG, but if I recall the white ninjas can't throw you(?). So umm... block... roll.. attack when there's an opening.

It's just a matter of approach I guess. Don't give up. The difficulty is what makes this game incredibly satisfying. Just be prepared to to be kicked again with the third boss. After that, you'll be ready to enjoy the trip. And what a trip it will be ;)

if you can beat the first two bosses in this game then the rest of the game will be no problem

first boss is hard due to your lack of options, his tendancy to block 90% of your attacks, and how much damage each of his hits deal (just remember to cheese
running UP a wall and hitting the Y button
)

the second boss is hard simply due to the camera...if you can get a hang of that in chaotic sequences (comes with time and experience) then this boss is extremely easy...but until you can make the camera unfuck itself this will probably be the hardest part of the game (just remember to
absorb magicians souls
)

Ninja Gaiden rocks. It's not only challenging, but it's also fun to play around in. You know you've got a winner on your hand when you actually enjoy essence farming and respawning enemies.

Oh be quiet! The first level boss is about strategy and not skill. Don't listen to this jerk!

To beat him, roll around the room by holding block and tapping the analog stick in any direction. You want to roll towards him, then away. Everytime you roll, you want to end up blocking again so hold L down the whole time. Make sure you don't get too close or he might do an unblockable throw. The key is to get close enough so that he tries to attack you.

You want to wait for his opening. His opening is when he comes at you with some sort of yell and flashing move. Then bash him when he's open.

So basically it's:
Hold L
Roll towards
Roll away
Repeat until he does the move that leaves him open
Whack him with a 3 hit combo.

The roll move is taught to you on level 2 so most people struggling on level 1 don't know about it. Once you learn to find the opening he'll become cake.

oh...and for Alma (a later boss that people complain about) all you gotta do is FUCKING USE DEFENSIVE AND EVASIVE MANEUVERS

it's all about defense and dodging - especially levels 1 & 2.

Just as you pull a block off, you should already have your next move in motion - you have to be super quick, almost premeditated, in everything you pull off in this game. After a while, you just "get it", and you're lobbing head off left and right - keep at it.

oh...and for Alma (a later boss that people complain about) all you gotta do is FUCKING USE DEFENSIVE AND EVASIVE MANEUVERS

Yea, I'll never understand why so many people have such a hard time with her - she is not THAT hard compared to everyone else in NG, just gotta TIME THAT ROLL. The 2 worms in the sewers were much harder IMO.

While I didn't need one myself Ninja Gaiden needed a no frills training mode where you could smack around a dummy that didn't fight back unless you wanted it to. In some respects that's what stage 1 and 2 are but you get killed fairly easily if you dont' play the game right. It's funny about ninja gaiden though, once you do finally finish the game and go back you'll find the first 2 stages much easier then before. All I can tell you and it's allready been said is that there is a block button, use it, XXX and XXXY , rolling dodge/block repeat. Until you get to where you can buy some more techniques that's your best bet.

Yah, the enemies in NG fight for their lives, ducking, blocking, using the environment to their advantage. So should you!

When I first got the game and got to her she gave me hell and after about 10 times she killed me (it was my second XBox game and I wasn't used to the controler + I sucked :lol ) I put the game aside. A couple of monthes ago I decided to replay the game from start and discoverd how much I used to suck :lol Alma wasn't hard at all (quite easy if you know what your doing (wind scroll all the way :lol )). As for the second boss - the camera is a bitch, but if you kill the normal enemies the boss won't be as hard because you'll have where to run without having to deal with the other enemies. Right now I'm on chapter 11 or 10, I'm not sure... I just stopped caring for the game. I'll probably play again next holiday.
First boss is all about wall jump + Y.

I just started replaying the game and can safely say that the first two levels are pretty easy. They seem very difficult at first, but that's just because you haven't honed your skills yet. On your first play through, be prepared to die A LOT on the second boss, though. It probably took me 10 tries to kill the fucker.

Here's a few tips that'll make your life easier:

1. Block, block, and block. Counterattacking is one of Ninja Gaiden's requisites. Until you know what you're doing, don't go charging at an enemy with your sword swinging wildly.

2. There are several rooms in the first level filled with a couple white ninjas who may or may not have infinite spawn. Whatever the case, don't feel obligated to fight them each time you enter the room. After you've beaten them the first time to advance, simply run past them the next time you need to go through.

3. When you're fighting the first boss, don't use your stars, and don't try to pummel him repeatedly. Get a few quick hits here and there, then get the fuck out. He'll try to grab you or pull off a mad combo, so take advantage of your speed and mobility to avoid his punishing blows. If you've become comfortable with the walls, use them to launch damage attacks; otherwise, keep going in and out.

4. The second boss is way tougher than the first. Before you encounter him, make sure to stock up on elixers, arrows, etc because you will need them. When you enter his arena, you'll notice there are bunch of annoying monks who'll shoot energy balls at you--ignore them and focus on the horserider unelss you need health (which they predominantely drop). Your arrows will come in handy here, so try to send a few volleys his way whenever he's on the opposite end of the court. At close range, doing the jump + y technique is quite effective, and can also be performed off the wall where the monks tend to congregate (meaning you'll do damage to the boss and the monks, providing you with health).

Ninja Gaiden's all about persistence and using your head until your skills naturally improve. Like many games with old school gameplay, it demands near perfection and will severely punish you if your skills aren't up to snuff. Keep at it!

The second boss is really easy actually, simply kill the 2 enemies that are there with you and suck up 2 energy balls and unleash the super combo on the demon rider , I think it takes 2 or 3 combos to kill him but yeah, really easy, I had a much harder time with the electricity dude on top of the blimp, no enemies to kill for energy and his pattern was trickier...

I'm finally getting NG again from a friend, gonna try to give it another shot. I wanted to like it so much, but I dunno.

Haha.

Was the demo easy or something? I don't consider myself that good at games, but I got through it pretty simply.

Regarding OpinionatedCyborg's list:

2. Only one room has infinate white ninja IIRC (the first room that you must slash a scroll to enter)

3. agreed...block, roll, and attack. Then don't forget to cheese that wall attack I mentioned before

4. FALSE! THIS PS2 FANBOY IS TRYING TO STEER YOU THE WRONG WAY!!! You kill one of the magicians without absorbing his essence (attacking, rolling, and blocking prevent you from absorbing essence) and wait until the horserider is nearby then charge (hold Y) until you absorb the essence and direct your super ultra combo at the boss...2 or 3 of these and the boss is toast (during my latest replay (prompted by the ass kicking DMC3 was handing me) I was able to kill this boss without getting hit on my second try using this method)

Those worms were ALL about the Unlabored Flawlessness. Just roll to evade all of their attacks, jump in the air to the side when they try to grab you, and roll>jump>Y attack when they are in range of melee hits

pretty funny because they almost made me break my controller the first time around...I'd like to think that DMC3 opened my eyes to how fucking easy Ninja Gaiden (NG is all about defense as opposed to huge multi-weapon combos AND defense)

also...in Ninja Gaiden, magic is for pussies

Cool, that's a far easier method to employ against the dude. Should I ever replay it, I'll certainly give it a shot :)

ninja gaiden is not hard at all, just learn to use the block.. dont play like devil may cry and just try to evade..

I bought NG over a year ago and just found it very hard and frustrating and try as I might I couldn't get into it. I got up to Alma and just quit in frustration. Until a week or so when I decided to give it another try. I restarted my game and at last the game has clicked with me and I get it. Before the only way I could beat the first boss was by luring him close to a wall and the jumping up and off the wall and slashing down. Notw now. Now I treat him with no respect. I breezed through the first 3 levels without dying. *pats self on back*

It didn't help that I didn't take notice of things like the ability to suck in those yellow orbs to deliver high combos. Doh.

Yeah it starts to get badass once you get on the Airship. That's when the real fun begins. I still wonder how some crappy fighting game creator can make an awesome game like Ninja Gaiden. It's like a miracle or something. I sure hope NG2 is better (Itagaki seems to think it will be).

Alma kicked my ass a lot of times. bitch was hard.

this game is awesome, now where is NG2?

I'm going to make sure when I get to Alma this time that I'm stocked up on potions and those things that bring you back to life. If I can't beat her with skill I'll beat her with perscriptions. Shopping ftw.

Ninja Gaiden is a game that just clicks all of a sudden, then you go on a rampage and feel like the ultimate badass. Especially if you have Black and upgrade Lunar! :D Denis Dyack needs to completely rip off the staff combat from NG.

Yeah before when I met 7 enemies on Pleasure Street I hoped they didn't mug me and tried to look casual. Now I return them to their maker before they have time to say 'hey look, it's nervous guy again'.

what I did with alma was...

upgraded the dragon sword up to 3 starts, had like 4 potions. ok use flying swallow (think that's how is called) against her she will evade it but eventually you'll get her when you do she'll fall to the ground then use the attack that sends her to air then do the air combo ryu has.

sorry for the shitty strategy but I don't remember the name of the moves very well.

Actually, to fight the first boss, you must cast your fear away - meet him head on with a 3-hit combo, then roll back... as he comes towards you, wait a sec - if he takes a stance, get ready to roll sideways AS he charges at you, NOT before...

A big mistake alot of people make is that they roll before an attack that they know comes, and they get hit as they come out of the roll - if you roll as the attack is coming, it will always miss you...

After you roll away from his charge, combo him from his back/side... roll away, repeat...

The reason why I said to cast your fear away and get in his face is because if you attack with X, X, Y (Y being a heavy attack), you have a chance to lock weapons with him on the last attack, and if you do, mash the buttons as fast as you can, and you'll win the lock up battle, pushing him back and leaving him open for an easy combo - which should be sword's most powerful and longest one this early on (I believe it was X, X, -> X, Y)...

Murai is awesome because he doesn't cut you any slack as a first boss, and has surely handed many people their asses when facing him for the first time - he makes or breaks you... it's like you're fighting a live-action Japanese movie yourself...

If you cant make it past the first level, you're chances for making it through the rest of the game are slim to none.

Its all about practice with this game though I guess.

Really?

I thought I was pretty lousy when I couldn't get past the dinosuar things right before you fight the jello mold for the first time. Eventually I made it past them (and to the second encounter with jello man), but it took me about a year, much of which was spent bitching about how impossible the game was rather than actually trying to get past the dinosaurs.

THe dinosaurs weren't actually the problem, it was (surprise, surprise) the ninjas that throw the exploding shurikens at you. Once I learned how to take them out quickly/easily, everything else seemed much easier.

But yeah, I have yet to get past Jello man 2. I haven't given it much effort, really, and I probably never will bother to beat it and the rest of the game. I'm such a lamer.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I totally missed the windmill shuriken. I had no idea it was around for the taking. But now I really want to play the game again, on 360, so I can get the windmill shuriken and, you know, maybe not suck as bad. Well, get the windmill shuriken, anyway.

GIVE UP!

seriously, give up. Ninja Gaiden requires hours and hours of dedication. Its not worth it.

Ninja Gaiden is an amazing game if you are willing to devote most of your free time to figuring out the complex and difficult fighting system. But unless you are a fantastic fighting game / combo-action game player or you have tons of time there is no point. This game will frustrate you to no end. Give up. Watch movies of someone else play the game.

Ninja Gaiden - Too damn hard for people without time.

The second boss the guy on the horse on the bridge? That's as far as I've made it.

LMAO! :lol

To the topic creator: There is a combo that goes something like XYXY, it's sort of an aerial combo that is generally safe. Bust that out when you see an opening against an enemy. Also for the first few missions, just up walls and then press Y for a nice little vertical slash (very effective here). Also, when you see enemies drop the Essence, charge up your sword (hold down Y) and then release it for MASSIVE DAMAGE (yes I said it...). A trick is to jump up, hold down Y and then when you land you will have charged some in advance. :)

The one that's on the console you prefer.

Also, to the original poster, just wait 'til you get to Horse Bastard.

My trick to Ninja Gaiden is to use the walls. The walls are your friend. If you are surrounded do the straight up wall run and Y attack. It's awesome and can get you out of 80% of bad situations. The thing that did for me were the black ninjas that stuck the explosives to you. They were impossible for me.
