I want to get into [game series] but keep putting it off!

Since I know you have a 3DS and are a big fan of that platform, you should just buy Link Between Worlds and play that. It controls perfectly and is a great place to start with Zelda. Also for Dragon Quest, Builders was my first DQ game of any kind, and DQ7 on 3DS was my first mainline DQ, and I loved both. Maybe try either of those?

Thanks a lot! Much appreciated :D. Is it okay to play A Link Between Worlds before playing A Link to the Past? Supposedly those two are related? And thanks for the DQ tip, too - will just go ahead and give it a shot and see how it goes...

And yes, the 3DS family systems have so many great games on them: I can't help but wish I'd gotten mine sooner, but alas.

for me its persona. it seems like it has a huge fan base and people rave about it all the time but i feel like its a game that requires patience and a lot of time. however, i do love the artstyle. i know persona 5 is on sale but not sure i can just buy that game and start the series there.

convince me to get into persona!

Had typed up a long reply but then accidentally closed the tab :(. Long story short don't worry about it - it's a great place to start. The big intimidating thing is the variety of activities to do but everything helps you in one way or another so it's mostly a case of choosing if you want to build up X now instead of Y later, or not. I found the game to dole out its systems pretty well without becoming stale or leaving you lost. Plus since it's the newest game you get all the QoL features like having the button assignments shown all the time mid-battle so you always know what to press to get to [action]

If you're feeling REALLY intimidated, like I was, you can just drop down the difficulty, and use a guide. I did so and don't regret having done so. You could also watch this video but bear in mind it does contain spoilers that play as she talks, in case you want to go in totally blind, so perhaps have it playing in another tab so you don't see what's being said.

Also, Dragon Quest. I keep meaning to buy a copy of 8, but as with Zelda, I find a deal on something else and wind up going for that instead...

I suggest u to buy DQ8 as soon as possible not just because its fantastic game but also its published by Nintendo. Not only becomes hard to find in retail stores later on but they become crazy expensive if try to buy it online.

I was lucky able to find a copy of DQ8 retail but I couldn't find DQ7 anywhere, I had to buy it from amazon but thankfully it still reasonably priced. Unlike DQ6.

Every fighting game that is on PS and Xbox, but not on Wii U or Switch because I don't have money to buy another console.

Dragon Quest. I played Builders and LOVED it, and the main games look right up my alley, but I keep putting them off in favor of other RPGs.

Fire Emblem too, I guess. Older games look great, but my issue is that the 3DS games seem gross and I'm not sure I want to get into a series like that... The Gaiden remake looks nice though.

Dark Souls

Monster Hunter

2 incredibly overrated series

Lol.

More niche series that I really want to get into but haven't yet include Wild ARMS, Yakuza and Valkyrie Profile.

Been trying to jump into Yakuza, friend even lent me his copy.

I dunno, I just can't seem to ever feel like playing the game(s) right now.

To you two, let me say this: Just go play Yakuza. Just start it regardless if you want or not and play a couple of chapters. Then you decide if you want to keep going.

Trails in the Sky/Trails of Cold Steel series. I own a few games in the series and have never touched it.

The same goes for you. Just install Trails in the Sky and play it for a bit.
Just convince yourself to play a few minutes of it regardless of everything else and any other excuses you can come up with.

Those "Atelier" JRPGs. So many games in the series I wouldn't know where to start.

Which ones you have ? As many people already said, Sophie is a good starting point.

Metal Gear Solid. Hours of cut scenes.

Hours of cutscenes and worth every minute. MGS1 has a quick start compared to other titles in the series, so start there.

Persona. I want to play it so bad but I struggle with certain turn based games so I am really picky about them. That's what's holding me back.

That and the time sink I know it will be, and the fact I don't have that time.

Ignore the time sink and just begin the game. If you like the game you will play it to completion little by little.

Yakuza for sure.

I own 0, preordered Kiwami, own 3, 4, 5, Dead Souls...

And never played a single one of them

If you are reading this, go put Yakuza 0 on your console right now and start playing. As I said with the others, don't think of anything else and just go play it for a while.

As for myself, I just started Ar Tonelico 1 which I had for quite some time and I loved the no Surge games. So far it's been great fun.

Dishonored. Bought both of them when they went on sale during their respective release years and never put them in my Xbox outside of installing them.

Witcher...I tried the first game for an hour or 2 and it wasn't engaging me...it sounds like my type of game as I love open world, action, exploration but for some reason it's not pulling me in...I'll give it another go I'm sure

Final fantasy for me, like... Where do you even start? I played 15 but that's it so far.

Well... What do you have access to for consoles? Many of them are on Steam now, so it would be easy enough to say that you should just start from III and play all the way to XIII on Steam, in order. It's nice to see all the improvements and changes, even if III and IV are updated remakes. Plus it gives the FF fanbase another person who actually has played the games to discuss and critique them properly instead of throwing shade based on memes at those they haven't.

Football Manager. Actually played it and own FM14 but I never took the plunge. I feel like I would LOVE the roleplaying aspect of it but I feel like I need to know a lot about the actual game to not suck.

That's where I fall apart.

Honestly, skip 1, watch a summary, play 2 and then 3. 2 hits the ground running. If you want to play 1 after that, go for it. 1 is for the crpg crowd that can tolerate the swamp

I don't know if this would count, but I've really wanted to get into the dynasty warriors games, but I have no idea where to start. It seems like there are a million of these games, so it's daunting. I know I'll enjoy it because I loved hyrule warriors and the fist of the North Star: Ken's Rage game.

I'd say that's the only series that I can think of really. I few years ago I finally got to play games series I always wanted to play and enjoyed myself quite a lot, especially ones from my childhood that I never got the chance to play.

There is a couple actually:

MGS: I played the collection on Vita but dropped it after a bit. I'll probably give it another try sometime.

Shadow Hearts: already bought the games but somehow lacked the motivation when the games arrived. Also got distracted by other games due to busy 2017 releases.

.Hack: The HD collection would be a great jumping point I guess.

Monster Hunter: I don't find the game to be fun at all especially because of the zoning. As it seems like the new one will rectify this issue, I will give the series another chance.

Yes, you don't need to play Link to the Past first, it's totally find to start with Link Between Worlds.

Fire Emblem. There are a ton of them, and I'm not super into SRPGs in the first place.

Lol.
If you are interested in the series, I would recommend Awakening or Fire Emblem 7, which is just titled 'Fire Emblem' in the West, on the GBA. Awakening is meant for newcomers, and has a lot of quality of life features you might appreciate. The story isn't great though, but 7 is great in that regard, and was meant for newcomers as well since it was the first localized title. Then again, Shadows of Valentia is the newest release, and it's grear, so you could start there too! It is quite different from other games in the series though, so don't expect the rest of the series to play like Echoes.

Monster Hunter, oh my fucking God.

I bought both 4 and Generations, found them fun, but only played like an hour of each saying "Eh, I'll get into it in earnest pretty soon."

The close second is tied for Yakuza and the Mother series. With Yakuza, I bought 0, and I wonder if I am going to make a mad dash to play that to completion before Kiwami comes out. With Earthbound/Mother 3, I just have been putting it off forever.

Danganronpa series

I really enjoy mystery/detective stuff and recently platinum'd Persona 5, so I feel like I'd really enjoy Danganronpa, but I just am not getting around to it. I've spent too long playing games that I can play for 100+ hours (Persona 5, Destiny, Warframe, etc.), so when a game comes along that's shorter, it always feels weird to me, even if it's a totally awesome game in its own right.

You did get me to do one thing, and that was actually start playing games today.

But I went with Digimon World Next Order first and disliked it, so I'll be playing Yakuza tonight.

Thank you!

MGS and Resident Evil are the biggest ones

Recently it was Final Fantasy but I have finally started with that franchise. Im at IV right now (fuck III"s final dungeon)

yakuza and persona. I bought yakuza 0 when it came out but i have yet to unwrap the plastic from the case. For Persona I was never a fan of the relationship thing so i never played it but because of all of the conversations surrounding 4 and 5 i keep getting interested but still haven't bought those games.

Yakuza. I just feel too lazy to start them. It would be ideal if they were all on one console. But I need to get new cables for my PS2, and I don't have a PS3.

Yakuza all day. I have 0, and 3 on ps3 and even have kiwami preordered for next week.
I just keep slacking

Just do what I said to everyone else. Pick the game right now, ignore all possible excuses, and just play a little bit of it.

Glad to be of help.

Step 1: Rip it open with all your strength
Step 2: Open the case, pick up the disc
Step 3: Insert the disc in the PS4 drive
Step 4: Start the games and pick new game. Play for a little while.

Give yourself, at maximum, 5 seconds between each step. Don't dawdle.

Mine are Nintendo exclusives. I see the trailers and hype and I'm interested, but I've not owned a Nintendo console since the SNES because they only have them exclusives.

I think I'm going to fix that next year and just dive in with a Switch. Get Zelda, Pokemon, Mario, Xenoblade etc. and hope VC is up and running so I can play those that I missed.

Mass Effect. The reasons being lack of time and fear about how outdated can Mass Effect 1 feel nowadays (and even 2)

I'm right there with ya pal. I'm worried now though. Seeing as Bioware botched Andromeda beyond repair and aren't supporting it anymore, I am hearing all kinds of of "unfinished" complaints.

I'd hate to start a series I'd prob put over 200 hours into just to be let down.

Monster Hunter, Dark Souls and Fire Emblem. So much of the conversation around them seems to hinge on difficulty and I got worried about potential anxiety from the game and the possibility that I won't get deep enough in to understand the magic. Admittedly, I am warming to Fire Emblem because the conversation to be less around difficulty these days and more around the relationship stuff.

And for entirely unrelated reasons Gabriel Knight, King's Quest, Police Quest. When those were at their peak I was exclusively a console gamer and as time has passed getting into those series has seemed more of a chore. I did pick up the Gabriel Knight remaster so maybe I should put it at the top of my backlog.

As a huge Mass Effect fan, I'd love to tell you to give it a try. I've put an ungodly amount of hours into that series and enjoyed almost every hour... up until the original Mass Effect 3 ending and Andromeda. Not sure I can recommend that kind of ball shot.

But if it helps, Andromeda isn't that connected to the original trilogy. You could just play the first 3.

Shenmue. Never played 1 or 2. It would be nice if Shenmue 1&2 HD was released before 3, so I can play them without getting a Dreamcast.

EDIT: Oh yeah, Shadow Hearts. Got the first two games quite some time ago, but still not played them.

I've always wanted to play them, and they are probably the biggest holes in my backlog, but I was afraid I just put them on the back burner for too long. Remember hearing about the awful end of ME3, and now Andromeda sounds troubling... I just thought maybe I waited too long.

The collection is perfect for that, they rough out at about 40-60 hours together.

Please get onto it when you can because it's an amazingly fun and yet soul crushing series. (When your faves die)

Heh, before I even clicked on this thread I was thinking "Devil May Cry".

I own all of them except for DmC, too. Even the original release of DMC3 and the Special Edition. I've played maybe 15 minutes of the first game, and that is it. Really want to get into them (mostly because of the praise 3SE gets), but I'm not starting in the middle.

Maybe someday I'll get around to it.

Nier. I keep hearing how the story and gameplay is fantastic, its my first priority when i have time to play again.

Yazuka. Again i keep reading how its is a great series, mainly Yakuza 0, but i never played any of the games.

The Witcher
Forza Horizon
MGS. I played 1 and loved it one of my favorite games ever, really didn't like MGS2, and then couldn't get into 3, and didn't bother with any others.

Hi BakerCat,

You can always just wait for DW9 or you could pick up DW8:XLCE for the PS4 which is currently 50% off $29.99

I been meaning to check out the Yakuza series. I really should pick up Zero and Kiwami, but keep getting distracted by other releases.

If your kid loves Pokemon but can't read yet, get him Pokemon Red/Blue. It's the easiest to play and it definitely helped my kid learn to read. There's lots of repetition of words and they can recognize most of the pictures already so it really helps build word/letter association. Play through with him to help sound out words and help with pronunciation. It is, without a doubt, one of the best educational games out there.

I just tryed to play Link's Awakening with him today and he was put off by the graphic style, IIRC early pokemon games share the same style as Zelda on the gameboy but I'll give it a try. Thanks for the advice.

Metroid. I always stop playing halfway through for some reason and then get discouraged to pick it back up much later due to the labyrinthine design of the worlds and not remembering what I was supposed to be doing.

Suikoden. Probably the biggest ommission in my JRPG catalogue alongside the Xeno(gears, saga, blade) franchise.

Yakuza. Just never managed to find an acceptable entry point. Now that 0 and Kiwami are out I'll be starting with 0 but it'll still take a while since I can't afford it right now.
