I agree, it's an okay movie. It's pretty good until Pesci dies and then it's just boring for the last half an hour or so.

The first time I watched that I was stunned. I got totally sucked in. How they can just be drinking and laughing and the just as quickly turn to that is amazing.

One of the best scenes in any movie ever.

the best part is was that was all ad-lib. Pasci was going improv based on an old story he remembered when he was young... Liotta roled with it and Scorsese was happy

this is the awesomness of Scorsese, when one of his actors goes ad-lib with magic, Marty lets them roll and keeps filming.. let the actors ACT!!

not like that hack George Lucas who forces his actors to spew crappy lines word for word and poop his movies... Martin Scorsese gives his actors room to act their parts, and if they got juicier line in their heads, let them act it out

Deniro's mirror scene in Taxi Driver (You Talkin' To Me?) that was 100% ad-lib improve and Marty was happy as a kid in a candy store with it

The shot where he takes her through that back entrance of that resturaunt is pretty great. Its a really long steadycam shot and its jamming "he's a rebel" by the Crystals in the background.
You kinda get the sense that she must have as she follows him.

I kinda' like the movie because it ALMOST makes me understand why these clowns get caught up in this shit and don't just quit when the quiting is good.

hah, it's a quote from the movie! poor guy...

SPIDER puts the drinks down and tries to ignore TOMMY again.

TOMMY
Come on. Spider. Come on. Let's
see you dance.

SPIDER
Why don't you go fuck yourself.

JIMMY
(laughing)
Hey, Spider. That's very good.
Did you hear, Spider? The kid's
got balls. See, the kid's got
balls. He's a good kid.

just to put it in context, if it's indeed the reason for the ban.

This scene cracks me up every time :lol

The dynamic between pechi and the woman that plays his mother is classic you kind of think how much does she know and if she cares about what he does.

Liotta in this scene is classic to he is like "Guys thats to far" but he still finds it funny haha.

I recently watched this for the first time and thought it was amazing.

I liked it more than the OP -- I'd say I like it a lot -- but better than the Godfather movies? Stop trying to be Ebert.

You do realise that one of the most famous lines in the whole SW saga was ad-libbed?

On topic the film isn't about the plot it was more about the characters and what that says about the mob(as you so rightly point out he[henry] didn't hesitate to save his own skin regardless of what happened to his "friends). Also no love for Sam Jackson? I had seen the film 2-3 times before I realised that he was in it.

The woman is Scorsese's mother.

Goodfellas is probably my favourite film. Too late now to a full write up on why, but I'll find time later.

Wow thats really interesting I didn't know that. She is perfect in her role.

Scarface is awesome. What an awesome character he is; he's so full of himself. But I must say that the scarface fandom is pretty damn tacky.

Carlito's Way is a shitty movie, by the way. It doesn't deserve to even be in the conversation.

It doesn't deserve to be in the same conversation but it sure as hell isn't shitty :lol

I've never known that.

Yeah, Goodfellas is definitely on my top five favorite movies list.

wait so you liked scarface better than goodfellas?

I think I'm going to be sick

The scene is good, yes. The rest of the movie, not so much. I need to rewatch it though, I'll admit. I haven't seen it since the theater.

It's DePalma in a nutshell, really. Great scenes in mediocre movies.

Agreed. The last Sean Penn scene is pretty great as well. Overall-- Meh.

Goodfellas is one of my favorite movies period.

The way it starts out all happy and freewheeling, and slowly gets more paranoid and depressing is awesome. I think one of the most underrated scenes in the one late in the film with Jimmy talking to Karen outside the warehouse, and you think he's going to kill or kidnap her. Intensely understated.

Best use of non-original music in a soundtrack of any movie ever, from Sinatra to Clapton to the Sex Pistols covering Sinatra. Sums up the movie well.

I recommend the book to anyone interested in a) more detail or b) how to dramatize something for film. A lot of liberties were taken with minor characters, who Joe Pesci ends up subbing for.

My favorite movie of all time. You just crossed the fuckin' line.

God, that "Layla" scene where everyone gets whacked is one of the best scenes in cinema history.

Scorsese Mother has had some great cameos in his films. Not withstanding her appearance in Goodfellas, I also get a chuckle from her in Casino or even the nagging voice in King of Comedy.

A couple of things:

1. I sincerely hope Pizzaguy wasn't banned for his comment to me. It was clear to me he was quoting the movie. My response to him was me quoting De Niro.

2. I will ease off calling Carlito's Way shitty. My memory of the movie and outrage at Spider Silva's insanity made me a bit hyperbolic. I still say it's mediocre, and doesn't belong in the conversation.

I think to fully appreciate Goodfellas and just how incredibly authentic it is, one has to have lived around or know - to some extent - the types of people being portrayed. I think people on the East Coast (New York, New Jersey) can better appreciate this movie than others. Same goes for The Sopranos. You watch these movies and you just can't believe how real it is.

Goodfellas is one of my favorite movies ever. The ambience, the characters, the dialog.. (Pescis "Do I amuse you" scene is hilarious... and even the "Oh, here is a leg, an arm.. a wing"-scene is a great..)... well, there are lots of great scenes... a great great movie overall..

Movies every single guy HAS to like:

Rocky 1-4
Rambos
Bloodsport
Goodfellas
The Godfather 1-2

You've forgotten

Casino
Fight Club
Predator
Alien
Aliens
Pulp Fiction

And a variety of others. The man-list is quite long.

Is it wrong to say I liked Casino better than Goodfellas? I thought both were good movies but I felt more drawn into Casino especially at the end.

Am I the only one who thinks that Ray Liotta and Leonardo DiCaprio look alike?

Yeah, I can agree with that (I'm from Brooklyn).

I've always felt that A Bronx Tale was underrated among mob movies. Not as good as Goodfellas, but very good imo One of the best scenes ever:

A bronx tale is alright but I hate the little Twat that plays De Niros son. Did you know he recently got sentenced to 10 years for a botched burglary where an off duty NYC cop got killed ?

Yeah, I heard. I felt he was pretty terrible in the movie also (sounded brain dead, but that might have been the effect they were after in order to make him appear more gullible/impressionable), but the film was carried by Palmintieri/DeNiro and the authentic atmosphere.

Goodfellas is extremely overrated. It's good, but far from Scorsese's best.

The use of music IS excellent, however, and there are several exceptional sequences. It's just that the complete movie is a little bit less than the sum of its parts.

was he the guy that was also in the Sopranos.

anyway Goodfellas is a classic. I still stop to watch it whenever its on A&E (which lately is A LOT)

I saw Goodfellas for the first time a few months ago and thought it was pretty meh. The problem, though, was that I watched the Sopranos first. Same thing happened when I watch The Godfather for the first time a few weeks ago. I've been desensitized to the whole "mob" culture thanks to Tony and crew.
