I watched my first anime show and I've made a huge mistake

OP, watch Cross Ange and Recently My Sister Is Unusual. Modern classics.

I'm surprised so many people in here have heard of it. Watching it made me feel like I'd stumbled on something super niche and weird

Nah... if you're INTO anime (and not just the typically popular shounen, which is a genre aimed at young boys with stuff like Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece), you definitely know of Oreimo.

The whole brother/sister thing is not an incredibly unusual trope either. Just... uncommon.

So I've never watched any anime and decided to find something. I got Crunchyroll on my PS4 and just Googled "best anime comedy on Crunchyroll". I was looking for something kind of light and funny.

Some title called "Oreimo" came up a bunch of times so I decided to give it a shot without reading up on it and watched 1 episode. Like seriously what the fuck is this? This is the weirdest/creepiest shit I've ever seen. It's about this guy whos sister is obsessed with some sort of erotic video games about little girls. Why is this even a thing?

GAF can you please recommend me something more..."normal" to watch to salvage my impression of anime. Like I said I just want something funny that I can throw on to wind down at the end of the day. I don't mind if a show's a bit weird (I play a lot of japanese games so I'm used to a bit of quirkiness) but preferably something without incestual overtones -_-

Dear god, I am so incredibly sorry you had to go through that. Do yourself a favor and go watch Nichijou right now.

OP here's a list of genuinely good anime not made for creepy little girl fanservice bullshit:

  • Cowboy Bebop
  • Samurai Champloo
  • Space Brothers
  • Hajime no Ippo
  • Planetes
  • Baccano! (This one took me about 5 episodes for it to click and come together but after that, it was awesome.)
  • Nichijou

Following are not light comedies, some are total mind fucks, but these are all masterpieces/anime staples or must watches if you become a fan of the medium.
  • Ghost in the Shell
  • Paranoia Agent
  • Mushishi
  • Mononoke
  • Evangelion
  • RahXephon
  • Utena
  • Mawaru Penguindrum

Also, you won't go wrong by anything from Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli.

Your avatar just reminded me that Afro Samurai exists and is an awesome anime. Definitely check that out too OP. Samuel L Jackson does the main character's voice and the soundtrack is done by the RZA. It's only 5 episodes so it's a really quick watch. Not sure what streaming services it's on though.

Yeah, Afro Samurai and its sequel were pretty straight forward but pretty enjoyable for what they were.

I've seen only some anime on Netflix that I haven't seen before such as Darker Than Black,Attack on Titan (before it came to Adult Swim), Psycho Pass, Fairy Tail, Kill la Kill, Legend of Legendary Heroes and the Fate Series. Attack on Titan has probably been the most interesting one I've seen so far.

It's well known specifically because it is weird.

As someone else said Steins;Gate is something pretty normal. As I said above Death Note is an excellent choice as well.

If you're looking for a great and not weird comedy (with no fanservice) watch Silver Spoon. It's my favourite series.

Gintama is funny and normal.

Haha.

I LOVE Gintama, but I wouldn't describe it as "normal". It actually avoids (and mocks) the creepy little girl shit, but there's still plenty of awkward, gross-out humor and dirty jokes that I wouldn't exactly say makes it a normal show. But that's part of the charm.

Mobile suit gundam. Unless you consider a guy obsessed with his teenaged mother surrogate incest

Well, there's a lot of awkward nudity in Turn A, especially at the beginning, that might turn someone off.

I refuse to believe you accidentally stumbled on Oreimo.

I think you're doing it wrong.

You want to grasp the surface and laugh at shows meant for a culture that's not yours. A lot of stuff, like puns gets lost in translation, in a way a good plot simply doesn't.

And anime comedies really aren't known for plot though, more like splashing stereotypes.

Hence, I think you ought to be more ambitious here.

If you want to go along my suggestion then start with either Mushishi (very japanese and charming), Cowboy Bebop (from the same dude that did Samurai Champloo, but better) and/or, if you enjoy "crime" series, Monster, definitely Monster. And PlanetES must be my "near future" science fiction favourite - well worth a watch.

Those are really good starters and light enough, if you ask me.

If you still want comedy then go for Azumanga Daioh (pretty much the starter of the Yonkoma to anime), K-On and Lucky Star as well (same genre). Still in the comedy bracket and with a little more story there's Great Teacher Onizuka... Or go see Inukami, Girls Bravo, Full Metal Panic (Fumoffu being the all comedy off-shoot hence less plot, but I'd see the prior shows just the same) or something. Not very high rated shows (that I know of) but they can make you laugh - so go for those three.

All rounders (not drama not all funny): Haruhi season 1, Full Metal Alchemist (I prefer the first series due to the pacing, but some prefer Brotherhood, that's fine) Gurren Lagann, One Piece

For drama: Start with Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Plenty others, it's a ritch genre, but definetly don't start with shit.

Also, there's quite a few movies you can check out:

-> http://imgur.com/gallery/Wxi0C (that's part 1, I recommend looking into the 3 parts and choosing some)

I'll also add to that list Miyazaki films (at least Totoro, Spirited Away and Mononoke Hime) The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal as obligatory.

Story sounds fake as hell, tis the equivalent of someone watching American tv for the first time and it just happens to be Jersey Shore lol

Comedy in anime is...weird. I hesitate to call it inept, because I've had people chalk my issues with it up to cultural differences, and its certainly consistent across many anime but...I don't know, I consistently find attempts to be funny in anime to be at best eye-rolling and at worst cringeworthy.

OP I would check out some of the recommendations like Ghost in the Shell or Paranoia Agent

For westerners, i always recommend Cowboy Bebop first as an entreepoint.

Anime is pretty varied...but YMMV if your not used to many of the types of content out there..

Yeah, I know what you mean. Like, sometimes a giant teardrop appears next to somebody's head, and then they turn into a super deformed version and scream a whole lot. It's not really funny but I guess it's meant to be.

Not sure if these are available on the service you're using, but Case Closed and Lupin the III are fantastic series that are much more accessible than most anime. Case Closed is basically a charming detective show and Lupin is a really fun caper.
