I won a Genesis/CD on eBay. Recommendations?

The Genesis was one of my favorite consoles as a kid, but my collection isn't what it used to be.

I do have Sonic CD and the Sega six pack (for Genesis), but what other essentials are there for this system? Preferably, something affordable.

I used to really love the 2 X-Men games on Genesis, not sure how well they would hold up though.

Are you asking for recommendations just for the Sega CD, or for both CD and Genesis?

I'll assume both. For Sega CD, get Lunar 1 & 2, Vay, Silpheed and Sonic CD.

For Genesis, get any Sonic game you can (excluding the awful Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine), VectorMan (preferably the first one, but the second one is okay, too), Ristar, any Phantasy Star, Aladdin and Earthworm Jim 1 & 2.

the Six-Pack is an awesome cart, you did good keeping that

for Genny get:
Earthworm Jim (better than the SNES version)
Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles
Ren & Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention (for the lolz)
Dynamite Heady

Don't know about too many Sega CD games but Sonic CD is worth checking out.

For Genesis: Sonic games, Streets of Rage 2, Gunstar Heroes, Aladdin, Road Rash 2, and Comix Zone.

Sega CD faves...

Lunar 1 & 2 - absolute must for RPG fans

Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin - best superhero game of the 16-bit era (with rocking Mr. Big soundtrack)

Popful Mail - charming zelda/platformer hybrid

Vay - average RPG enhanced by the Working Designs treatment

Sonic CD - series peak

Chuck Rock II - great platformer with hysterical soundtrack/effects

This is a decent starter list for the Genesis:

Results are mostly from a poll I ran on GAF a couple years ago.
In my opinion, the biggest shocker on this list was Disney's Aladdin. Though it failed to receive a single 1st place vote, it still managed to break into the top 10. I had no idea it was so popular.
I had that game as a kid. It kicks ass.
better than the SNES version

Thanks for the suggestions, dudes.

I'm not kidding, it belongs in every collection because people in the future need to know that it existed. Also, Comix Zone and OutRun.

as already said, go check out racketboy's site.

Failing that, these should get you started :

Revenge of Shinobi
Eliminate Down
Crying (Bio hazard battle in the US)
Gaires
X-Ranger
Contra : Hard Corps
Steel Empire
Wings of War/Gynoug
Undeadline
Gray Lancer
Panorama Cotton
TWinkle Tale
Thunderforce 4
Alien Soldier
V Five

What's the appeal of buying these newer systems?

Also, if you can find a copy: Snatcher. Most defintely needs to be grabbed. If only because it's (Sega CD) the only ENGLISH LOCALIZATION ATTEMPT in the world for the game.

I fucking hated the first one because my reset button was broke so I couldn't beat Mojo... :(
Snatcher + Streets of Rage series btw.

Some old games are wonderful even if they don't have the newest graphics. Actually in the case of the Sega CD, you'll find some games with surprisingly excellent quality music, and movie sequences that, while low res, are original productions you can't find anywhere else.

There is emulation but 1) it's illegal 2) there's nothing to enjoy about collecting the titles and having the physical game and package and 3) sometimes the emulation just isn't as fun as playing on an original machine with the actual controller and aesthetics.

Also in the case of some consoles, like Saturn and Dreamcast, the emulation can't be considered perfect. In that case you must buy the original machines to enjoy the old games in any form approaching perfection.

Really, it's like asking, why buy a 360 when you already have a PS3? In short, different games.

Snatcher can be a real bitch when you need to save, is it possible to replace the battery? I remember there also being a Genesis cart that served as a memory card.

what did that game look like? Don't leave us hanging post pics/vids...

I also just recently discovered the Streets of Rage series and it is BALLA. I kinda lament that I spend the early 90s playing Super Metroid and Final Fantasy VI.... I could have been beating up robot hookers with 80s-looking tough guys, set to throbbing chiptune techno music!!! This series is fuck awesome!!!

Yeah, until you find the horribly censored 3 (unless you're playing the Japanese version) which tries to have a story which is butchered anyway.

Genesis > SNES, anyway.

I can't remember... is the Genny one of those consoles I can mod regions with a switch and just play the Japanese version hidden on the same cart (a la NeoGeo)? Or would I have to import a Bare Knuckle 3 cart to get that?

When I was a kid and idealistic teenager... NO. I needed my magical fantasy romps (ranging from Nintendo to Square) best found on SNES.

Now that I've killed my brain cells with alcohol and rap music.... GENESIS YES AWESOME BEST.

You'd probably have to import the cart, but I think like the NES you can mod it with a simple soldier trick and have it be region free.
Though, honestly I emulated BK3 just to see the censoring. BK2/SoR2 EU also has a censoring of Blaze's panties being shown in a Jumping High Kick, which isn't shown in the US version but is shown in those.

Bah, after my NES breaking down as often as the 360 does now a days, I jumped ship to the Genesis in the 16-bit area as a 5-6 year old and enjoyed it more than Nintendo's offerings.
SoR > Yoshi's Island. Yes, indeed.

I was always partial to Eternal Champions for Sega CD. Great fighting game with loads of fatalities, secrets, and characters. I vaguely remember the Sega CD Jurassic Park being interesting as well.

whats the appeal of buying these old systems?

part nostalgia, part different designs, part seeing what was achieved within limitations.

Hell, i've rebought stuff because i like the box art.

Japanese SNES in particular games are the gaming equivalent of lush music LP covers :droool

Pretty sure that the Sega CD battery charges itself while being used. So, as long as you don't go for months at a time without playing it, you shouldn't have to worry about losing save data.

There is a memory cart that plugs into the Genesis slot ("Backup RAM Cart") for a more permanent solution.

Region-locking is done on a per-game basis. Most early games are region-free; many later games are not. Some games (but not all) also have both versions contained on the same cart. I have the JP version of Gunstar Heroes, and it does have region locking (it plays on JP and PAL systems only, not US), but I can get around it by starting the game in PAL mode (to boot the English version), then switch it over to US after the game loads (to get it running in 60hz).

You just need 2 basic switches for a region mod, one for language (JP/ENG) and one for video format (NTSC/PAL). The process is somewhat different between the model 1 and model 2. I don't know of any sites with step-by-step instructions.

JP carts are shaped differently and would require some modification to be made to the slot in order for them to fit. Alternatively, you could grab a Game Genie or similar pass-through device and try to look up specific region bypass codes for it.

Rocket Knight Adventures!

Dammit, I was just about to post that. :lol Good taste, man!

For the Genesis, I know Shinobi 3 and Streets of Rage 2 have already been mentioned, but I'd recommend those, too.

Gunstar Heroes is another must-have, IMO. If you enjoy side-scrolling shooters, grab Thunder Force III and IV (aka 'Lightening Force' in the US. Yes, lightening, not lightning. >.>)

People here have already covered most of my picks for the Sega CD, but I'd also recommend Soul Star and Robo Aleste, just off the top of my head.

I have a Japanese Sonic 1 (it's enhanced over the original US release!), and its copy protection is just that the cart is shaped different. I modded my Gen by taking its top off. :P But I think other games did have a more advanced region lock... don't remember.

edit: thanks sixfourtyfive!

But yah... emus :P

Nah I can't get down with that... SNES won. Yes, I had both machines and SNES won, in the end (I am an oldschool Sonic fan though). BUT... Genesis is more gangster. SoR is not the better game... but it is the game that would win in a barroom brawl by fighting dirty. Yoshi would get brained with a lamp post and curb stomped by a trashy hooker and a kangaroo, set to a Z80-fueled techno track.
