ICO & SotC Collection, PS2 vs. PS3 comparison

Metalmurphy said:
The motion blur working at solid 30fps instead of something like 15-20 makes a HUGE difference. Looks stunning.
That it does.

ICO looks a world apart from the PS2 version but the difference between SOTC PS2 and PS3 was more marked by the massive frame rate improvement.

I could never play SOTC because the FPS hurt my head but along with the lovely IQ improvements, the PS3 version is most certainly going to be bought.

Does not apply 1:1 to videogames. Photography and film has infinite anti-aliasing built in. Games rendering engines do not, they lose aliasing when you bump up resolution. This effect remains noticeable even at otherwise "excessive" resolutions.

You're right that is does not apple 1:1. But please, perform a blind test. I did and it was a real eyeopener for me personally. I could not tell te difference sitting 4 meters away. I'm not trying to say that 1080p is worthless, but the point I was trying to make is that I don't see the point in having 1080P for HD-remakes like ICO and SotC and while sitting further away from your set. I'd be more happy with 720p and a higher framerate ( I mean 720P and 60 fps just like God of War collection ). I think a higher framerate is more noticeable than 1080P for these 2 games.

There's a reason Wipeout HD is one of the best looking games on the market. teneightyfuckingpee. 1080p makes a very obvious difference to me.

Can I argue that the framerate makes it better looking? Please?

Both factors contribute. :P
I completely agree. I got it for free by default since I already had all the other games Sony was giving away after the PSN outage and I booted it up the other day out of curiosity. 1080p and 60fps combined with the awesome art blew me away. Made me want next gen to get here sooner.

Pulled up my pcsx2 bookmark with some of my comments/additions.

1. the shadow bug (fixed)
2. the effect codenamed "fairy shading" missing (it does work in software mode though)
3. motion blur missing only after enabling progressive scan (probably fixed)
4. bloom
5. texture flickering
I'm not sure what remains, fixed, or requires tweaking. A lot of stuff is also hack fixed so it is in no way the same as the original. Last I checked the game needed a custom build and an offset hack.

I guess it depends how much a purist you are. I just always scratch my head how the emulated version is treated so godlike when it doesn't represent the original compared to a ton of PS2 games. People playing the collection will get the better experience regardless of comparisons.

Wipeout looks ace, but it isn't a real 1080P game. It still a real marvel to look at.
I still feel ( my opinion ) that 1080p is a bit overrated

wipeout 1080P?

Technically it is 1080p since the vertical resolution is how it's measured but it isn't full 1080p all the time. Worth it for 60fps though.

I must be blind, because apart from some AA and a slightly bigger picture, I'm seeing virtually no difference. :/

Guess I'll just stick to my PS2 versions. Was looking forward to this too.

I hope they improved the controls in SotC as well. While I eventually got used to them in the original, they were pretty frustrating for a while, and I think that the people who play this for the first time coming in with ultra high expectations will be in for a rude awakening if the controls remain untouched.

I missed both of these so I will be buying this ASAP.

I have been all for these HD re-releases but it is kind of odd when you think about it. We re buying a game with increased resolution, better AA, and framerate.

I have been replaying Deus Ex this past week with all the same benefits for free.( Plus the added benefit of texture mods)

Just something I just thought of that is kind of odd. Still though, if not for these HD collections I never would have played the God of War series.

Full HD is held up nearly all the time, and the fluctuations are imperceptible in gameplay, which you may think fuels your argument, but it really doesn't.

And you know what else, fuck 1080p. Where my 4K displays at.

Well, that explains this.

Damn, you pulled that out pretty fast. Do you have an "Xbots" bookmark folder for all those juicy, ignorant posts that you can share with other Sony fans? haha

And for the record, most games I've seen played on PS3 (I may not have one, but my friends and family do) look better than Xbox - LA Noire being the most recent example. It's just personal preference to me to own an Xbox and to prefer dark, more realistic games to colorful cartoony games, regardless of system.

And I play 95% of my games on PC.

Defensive much?

Indeed, in fact, it looks better if you force 720p. Holds the 60fps more consistently. Makes the menus looks a tad muddy on a native 1080p screen, but worth it, imo.

you could remap them...

I have a list.

But back on topic, Ico is one of my favorite games of all time, definitely the best PS2 game and I never played Shadows. I might end up buying a PS2 and both games, because I just can't afford a PS3 right now.

Lately I'm the same way. It's funny how you can have no attachment to the consoles, and you can post your opinion about console games, and you will be labeled as a "fanboy" just because you frustrated someone who does have a strange emotional attachment to their console.

Ico looks very impressive, while SOTC just looks smoother to me in the videos.
I am sure I will love both though, cannot wait to play these again in HD.

Agreed.

I look forward to re-live both experiences. Great games.

This is what an HD update should look like.

Which list?

Sony Fanboys?
Xbox Fanboys?
Nintendo Fanboys?
PC Elitists?

I don't feel like i "have to" play these masterpieces again in HD, gimme the new Ueda game instead.

It's the same reason why i still have to buy OoT 3DS.
Well, OoT is actually a little bit different, but especially with SotC (and less with ICO) i'm perfectly fine with my memories of Ps2-like framerate and playing on a CRT TV.

Buying this hoping that i can relive the same experience AKA nostalgia (and i sure as hell wouldn't) and/or to post on forums "man, this looks so good" is not my cup of tea.

These HD portmakes are good for people who still have to play the games for the first time, i believe. (and not everyone of them, some people will still hunt for SotC and ICO Ps2 copies for the original stuff).

Actually, this is what i'd recommend: buy the original version if you can.

LOL I simply remembered you from the other thread.

I think a cool feature for SotC would be to remove the health bars and grab-time/current weapon icons. I loved the bare-bones non-interface presentation of ICO, so I was a bit disappointed when SotC forces those bars on you.

I don't think I'd have a problem playing without these items on the screen. You can always tell if Wander's about to fall off while climbing, and as for stabbing the marks they disappear once you can't stab them anymore, so that health bar doesn't need to be shown either. As for which weapon you are currently on, that is obvious because Wander will actually equip whatever you have selected.

Any people out there that got the game early know if you can turn these things off in the menu somewhere?

Really? I don't "support" console makers. I buy consoles that have games I want to play.

Then again, I am filthy rich, so maybe I don't have to make these hard decisions.

You don't have to be filthy rich to own all consoles. You just have to spend all your disposable income on gaming.

Holy shit at the PS3 version of SotC, can't wait to replay it at 1080p without slowdowns.

Yeah and I don't consider myself a PC master race either.

I'm the type of guy who has no system on radar until he sees a game he likes. And I'm quick to "abandon" that format if nothing I want comes along.

Then years later go back and realize I missed things and spend a thousand dollars repurchasing old systems. lol

The controls were brilliantly realized in SotC. Absolutely perfect.

Damn, I was impressed with SotC's graphics when it first came out on PS2, but now...have they really been *that* bad all this time?

Jeez.

Anyway, so pumped for this collection. And I've never played Ico so what better time?

for me i dont know why but i kinda prefer that dodgy framerate of the ps2 version. that smooth 30hz makes it feel to sterile and videogamey. maybe on ps2 its closer to that cinematic 24hz, it just felt more epic that these colossus werent only massive but even brought the console to its knees to render.

You've earned my tag.

Some of the puzzles are carbon copies of the PlayStation one game. No doubt the game went through significant changes, it was their first game. But as far as I understand the game made the switch.
The same text mentions the engine on PS2 was all new.

The bow and arrow aiming felt a bit off. That was probably more down to the enormous input lag due to the terrible framerate. Button mapping was generally good though.

The same can't be said for the HUD. Shame they haven't improved that for the Collection.
