id Games... Have I been wrong all this time?

I pronounced it "EYE DEE" as a kid, but once I heard that it was actually id, like id, ego, superego, I've pronounced it that way since.

I started thinking it was I D Games, learned I was wrong 15 or so years later, still call it I D Games in my head because I never had a reason to say their name outloud in recent years.

Yes it's pronounced as one syllable, as in id, ego, superego. People have already mentioned the etymology of "in demand" but I believe the meaning it settled upon was a combination of factors:

The company writes its name with a lowercase id, which is pronounced as in "did" or "kid", and, according to the book Masters of Doom, the group identified itself as "Ideas from the Deep" in the early days of Softdisk but that, in the end, the name 'id' came from the phrase "in demand".[9] It is presented by the company as a reference to the id, a psychological concept introduced by Sigmund Freud. Evidence of the reference can be found as early as Wolfenstein 3D with the statement "that's id, as in the id, ego, and superego in the psyche" appearing in the game's documentation. Prior to an update to the website, id's History page made a direct reference to Freud.[10]

I use to called it "I D" Software (Eye Dee Software). However, that all changed when I heard EA and John Carmack pronounced it as Id (id) Software. Unfortunately, to this day I still instinctively call id Software, Eye Dee Software, following by a correction in pronunciation.

Pretty sure there was a screen in Wolfenstein or Doom that explained it was Id (as in id, ego, superego). I've called it that since the early 90s.

I called them I.D. for over a decade, but I finally learned the correct pronunciation like two years ago and I've been saying "id" since.

I refuse to pronounce "GIF" the correct way, though :P

Going I D over id is more habit on my part. It's definitely one of those things I want to do right because I just don't see a good reason to go counter like with GIF (fuck's sake look at gift, and the English language is already too much of a mess.)

I've been pronouncing it like 'I D', until I saw a vid about the recently released Doom in which someone said id.
Mind was blown.

short for "weed" because they we're high as fuck to make those games. All gift from the gods
