I'd like to buy a PS 4, but which version?

It's closer to a £150 price difference according to Amazon UK. You can nearly buy 2 PS4s for the price of one PS4 Pro.

Personally speaking I just don't think that's worth it.

Yeah, most PS4 Slim I have seen around here are part of a bundle, which even if you don't want that game, you can trade it in towards something you *do* want.

lol no. i know what downsampling is. it makes things look slightly better nothing major. downsampling isn't anywhere near as good as native resolution. i play on PC btw so i know. boost mode isn't gonna do much either. sure it'll give a more solid framerate but still not worth the money.
Games going from 45 to 60 fps are not a big deal ok.gif. Sounds like someone is insecure with its purchase and and it's trying to convince himself that something he doesn't have is not worth it.

true. i am forgetting. the pro is £350 and i paid £230 for my slim. so back in december it was a £120 difference. you can get a slim for about £200. so £150 difference now.
See, all is clear.

nope. i'm perfectly happy with my purchase :) i have a pc so if i want to play at better framerate/resolution (far beyond what a pro can do) then i'll play on my PC which is more powerful than an xbox scorpio which will put the pro to shame :)

This topic comes up about twice a month now and it always devolves into the same argument, when really, only the OP knows what's best.

Will the PS4 be your main system? Are you gaming at or more than 8 hours a week on average? Do you have an extra ~$100 to spend?

If the answer to any of those questions is a no, get the Slim.

if anything it makes my point even more valid. £150 difference isn't worth it.

Yeah, I know gaf is an enthusiast forum, absolutely.
But I've seen many a time where some posters can get a little over excited at times regarding money/value (now that said, I don't know others financial situations and value is of course subjective too).
But it's a not infrequent occurrence for some posters at times to buy whole new systems and spend hundreds of dollars on machines for the sake of 1-3 games. Now personally speaking, I think that's nuts.

Similarly, for OP, a prospective new PS4 owner, who has not got a 4K TV (and hasn't indicated he plans to get one any time soon) to spend an extra £150 over what is already a perfectly more than adequate playing experience, that will utilise every PS4 game in the library, cos "it's the better one" is just nuts to me.
No one is arguing that Pro isn't better than Slim, but it's nearly double the price over the base model.

OP, again it's going to depend on your budget, how price sensitive you are, and how much you'll use the system.
If it's just going to be for a couple of games then really don't bother with the Pro, it'll be a waste.
That's the last I'm saying on this now.

I feel that the pro isn't worth the additional cost, unless it'd be your main gaming system. For me it didn't seem worth it because I primarily play on PC and wanted to play the PS4 exclusives as cheaply as possible.

Question 2 seems irrelevant. First and third are fair inquiries to determine whether it might be worth it.

Now that Boost Mode is out officially, I don't think I'll ever recommend anything other than the Pro. It's worth the extra 100.

That's all it is to me, so why would I say otherwise? I literally can't tell the difference in 1080p.

Well I guess you did the right thing by not getting one. Still, that doesn't change the fact that the improvements are measurable and plenty of people can and do notice the difference.

At this point it wouldn't make sense to not get the Pro. Even at 1080 you get a few bonuses, and there's been quite a few sales that put it at a reasonable price.

So, with the release of Persona 5 only being ~3 weeks away, I decided I should buy a PS4 sooner rather than later. So, I will do exactly that in the next few weeks. However, I am not really sure if I should buy the Pro or the regular version. So, I need a bit of advice.
Normally I would say that the Pro is the newer version and therefore that one is better. However, I actually have no idea where the differences between the two version are. Does the Pro have more space? Do games load faster? Do they look better? Or something completely different? The Pro is also over 100€ more expensive, so there's that...

A friend of mine said that the Pro is affected by the TV. If that's the case, I only have a TV that's a few years old. Since nothing is wrong with it I don't really plan on buying a new one. And even if I would, I can't buy a large one because I don't have the room for that.

So, any help would be appreciated, GAF.

The pro has twice the amount of shader units (basic computational processors in graphic cards) and a higher clocked speed both for the CPU and GPU. This results in ~2.3x more GPU power (4.2 tflops vs 1,8 tflops) and a ~30% stronger CPU. (Boost mode doesn't use the extra shader units, just the faster clock speeds for games without native pro support)
The pro also has an additional gigabyte of ram which is usable by the OS only (OS doesn't need to use the shared 8gb of ddr5 ram. This allows games to run at higher resolutions and to use more detailed textures).
The Pro has a native sata 3 port which (in theory) allows to fully utilize faster hard drives or ssds, the base ps4 only has a sata 2 port (slower).
The Pro also has an usb 3.1 port on the back side (3 usb ports total).

Overall it is a big step up in total power and games tend to run at more stable framerates, higher resolutions and slightly improved details, with some exceptions. In my opinion it is worth getting a PS4Pro over a PS4 if you buy a new one. The downside is the extra cost of 150€ atm (current amazon.de offer: base ps4 + 3 months ps+ for 248€ vs PS4Pro + 3 months ps+ for 399€)

Just get a Pro, no real reason not to for newcomers to PS4. I've got a 1080p display and I'm glad I picked up the Pro, but it took a few choice games for me to become pleased with it as I was initially disappointed. Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1 opened my eyes to how much of an enhancement the Pro can make to certain games.

If it's gonna be your main way of playing games going forward, and it fits your budget, might as well go with the Pro.

If it's just for Persona 5 and the exclusive here and there, just get a slim PS4.

No reason to pay up the extra cash for something you won't be using a ton. Besides, I noticed your profile lists your steam name. If you're a PC gamer the money you'll save by buying a slim can be used on your next graphics card upgrade, etc.

And don't just listen to everyone on Neogaf. Go on Gamersyde and digital foundry and see if the difference is great enough for you to justify the extra cash. Everyone has different expectations when it comes to a games performance.

If you can afford it I would recommend the PS4 Pro. If Money is REALLY tight the OG or Slim PS4 will do just fine. As time goes on this gen (if we still ahve gens i guess) the Pro will pay dividens. I say this reagdless of whether you havea 4k TV or not.

He is saying that the other guy's PS4 was not quiet, implying that he "does not know what loud is".

I always wondered why some are quiet and some are not... humidity a factor?

Sony also use different fans in them. Some of them are just louder no matter humidity. My OG PS4 was a jet engine and I live in sunny England. My Pro is silent in the exact same room.

Get a Pro - games run better on a 1080p TV and load times are much improved. remote play is much better. It's nice and quiet. Optical out for audio. Worth the $100 difference.

I wouldn't recommend a Pro unless you have or are planning to get a 4K television set. The difference is negligible on a 4Ktv on some games I can only imagine what it's like on 1080.

Removing price from the situation you get the following:

Pro can get you:
Higher resolution
More stable / higher frame rates
Additional effects
Down sampling on a 1080p tv
Boost mode on older titles
Possible a longer life span depending on how sony treat the next console.

Slim gets you:
Smaller console
Possibly quieter

Really if money isn't an issue the pro is a solid winner unless those 2 slim pluses mean much to you.

However if money is an issue then it's up to you what to do. I would personally say get a pro as long as you can afford it. However the slim is a great console still.

Put the extra money and go with a Pro, I would if I had the chance. I currently own a launch window PS4, but I'm definitely getting a Pro as soon as I can.

What? This is just silly. I own a 1080p tv and see huge benefits. Actually with the Pro improving my gaming on my 1080p set, I'm in no rush to get a 4K set.
If you would describe the difference between a PS4 game displayed on a 1080p screen by the base PS4 and the PS4 Pro as "huge" then you should rush out of the door right now to get a 4K TV. Personally, I think the difference is negligible and not even close to $100 or 30% of the cost of a slim (which is also not atrocious looking on your shelf).

If you own a 4K TV, sure. If you feel better knowing that you've got the most powerful PS4, go ahead. But if you're asking this question in the first place I sincerely doubt the Pro is worth it. I say this as someone who owns a PS4 Pro and even put a solid state drive in it to lower load times (btw totally not worth it, but it is for me). I get the benefit, it's just not cost effective.

get a Pro

down the line when you get a new TV it will most likely come standard with 4K. if you cheap out now you might be kicking yourself if you get the standard edition.
