id software interview

Shack: With Orcs & Elves and those kinds of projects on cell phones and DS, how much direct involvement does id have, with the game developed by Fountainhead?

Kevin Cloud: Oh, John(Carmack) is completely hands-on, absolutely. He's the guy doing the tech. I don't see where he finds the time to sleep. [laughs] Honestly, with all the development he does for us, all the new technology, all the rocket stuff he's doing, and then this on the mobile phone and the DS, it's just some really kickass stuff.

Shack: So you think he'll keep doing more in that vein?

Kevin Cloud: Oh yeah. There's an interesting story about that. He went off on vacation with his wife and kids, to the beach, and John was like, "What am I going to do on the beach?" He picks up his wife's mobile phone and says, "These games are crap." [laughs] So he goes back to the hotel room, starts getting some dev tools for it, and starts programming a game.

He comes back from vacation and says, "I've got this cool idea for a new game. We could put Doom on a cell phone!" [laughs] That's John, you know, that's what he's all about. The cell phone is a real restrictive system, and he can just wrap his mind around it real quick. So, absolutely.

wow wtf at the vacation quote :lol

Hopefully their is something new in interview because what you quoted has been said before in another by Carmack. Still cool though.

orcs and elves is getting ported to the DS. I don't know if they're really doing a hands-on job with it.

carmack should make the end all, be all engine for Wii and just rake in the cash.

they still have a chance to be first.
There was an interview with Steve Nix of id about this very topic a while ago. He didn't confirm nor deny anything, but stated that they get bothered to create a Wii engine by their licensees quite often. His wording made me believe that they actually have something in the works.

They would probably have to drop back to q3 tech than move it up to wii level. Shouldn't be too hard, gamecube used something really similar to open gl i heard?

Ah the memories!

Now THAT was gaming! How I miss 96-97 and the online gaming explosion!

I remember watching all the demo's. The Swedes dominated those competitions didn't they?

Also, wasn't there all sorts of hoopla regarding which map those matches were held in? I remember the Americans preferring dm3 "Abandoned Base" and the Swedes greatly preferring e1m2 "Castle of the Damned".

Speaking of which...

Doesn't that bring back memories?

I loved dm3 so much that I remade that map for Q2, along with a handful of others.
