There's a difference in being helpful and being pushy.

When people work on commission, they become pushy. They follow you, constantly bother you, and are an overall pain-in-the-ass. I work retail/commission, and my conversations always go like this:

"Hi sir/ma'am, how are you doing today?"
"I'm alright, you?"
"I'm doing good (or other joke here). Is there anything I can help you with?"
"No, I'm good, just looking."
"Okay, holler if you need anything, I'll be around."

That's it. They aren't ignored but they aren't being pushed into buying something. I hate it when people latch onto you when you're just looking. If I have a question, I'll ask. You'll feel important and I'll get the information I need.

How about you read what people are actually saying?

There is a significant difference between being friendly and being pushy. Why should people be expected to just sit there and take it after they've responded to sales pitches with a "No, thank you."?

There is nothing wrong with asking a customer if they need help with something and leaving them alone when they decline. That isn't what is being discussed.

I feel like an anomaly. I've had nothing but good service at Gamestop, Bestbuy never asks me for help more than once, and I've gotten quick speedy service at the Apple store.

For 2 years. I also worked as a server for 1 year (Which requires an even higher focus on walking the line between being helpful and being obnoxious). Any more assumptions about me or are you prepared to acknowledge the distinction?

There were no assumptions, it was just a question.

You admit that it's a fine line but you assume everyone can walk it fine? That seems a bit ridiculous. Not every person is going to be perfect at their job and they are generally doing their best. Considering these aren't "professional" professions some slack seems giveable if they are doing their job, even if it comes off annoying. It's hardly the employee who wants to be doing the schtick, they just want to keep their job most of the time.

The truth of the matter is, a lot of these stories are quite possibly exaggerated by the "victim" of over enthusiastic or "don't want to lose their fucking job because 'secret shoppers' will say they don't need help but you're supposed to be insistent because that's a good employee" servers or whatever you may have.

Frankly, it's sad that you don't seem to show some sympathy having done the job yourself, but it's not surprising.

A retail clerk doesn't need to be as persistent as a server; your customer is mobile. If you ask them if they need assistance and they decline, the responsibility for getting further help rests on them. That isn't true of a server; if I ask you if you need help, you may decline only to realize a few minutes later that you actually did need something (Happened constantly). A server has to walk that line; a retail clerk does not.

The idea that secret shoppers will report you for failing to constantly hassle them is absurd. The company I worked for brought them in on a regular basis and I was never penalized for such a thing. They primarily rated attentiveness (Were they asked if they could be helped?) and quality of service (When they asked, was the information they received worthwhile?)

This notion that people should just allow themselves to be subjected to high-pressure sales tactics for every sale needs to die. Whether or not they're "doing their job" is irrelevant; they're the ones who accepted the shitty job and they should do so under the expectation that they're going to annoy people and achieve responses that are symptomatic of that.

Ha, as I recall that wasn't specifically mentioned in the post. Only that the guy working there said something along the lines of "Oh, [insert name of popular game here]! Good choice, I've been dying to play this!" and the poster was mad because he was "getting a game review he didn't ask for" or some such shit.
