IDW Publishing is back in the BBC America business. Following the "Doctor Who" license moving to Titan earlier this year, IDW announced plans Wednesday to publish new comics based on the channel's clone-centric sci-fi series "Orphan Black," with a scheduled start of early next year. No further details, such as a creative team or more specific time frame, have been revealed.

The press release announcing the comic stated it "will not be a clone of the show but will feature all-new stories set in the complex and thrilling world of 'Orphan Black,'" with IDW working closely with the show’s producers.

"'Orphan Black,' in addition to being a captivating TV series, is a perfect premise for comics," IDW chief creative officer and editor-in-chief Chris Ryall said in a statement. "And as the second season has expanded the series in exciting new directions, that has only increased the amount of stories we’ll be able to tell in comic book form."

A Canadian series, "Orphan Black" debuted in March 2013 on both BBC America and Canada's Space network. The show, starring Tatiana Maslany as Sarah Manning (one of a number of clones), quickly attracted a hardcore fanbase and critical acclaim. Its second season wrapped last month; and a third has been ordered for 2015.

IDW has a long history with comic book adaptations of live-action television shows -- beyond "Doctor Who" and "Orphan Black," the San Diego-based publisher has also been home to comics based on "24," "Angel," "CSI" "The X-Files" and more.
