If the Switch isn't a handheld, what handheld successor do you want?

If switch fails to take off , I expect a new dual screen handheld in a year or two.

I'm almost hoping for that. Really want another dual screen handheld.

Same. More importantly, I'd also a dedicated handheld that actually fits in my pocket, so nothing that much bigger than a 3DS XL.

Switch seems to be in pretty good demand, though, so I currently don't think it's going to happen.

It's a handheld. If you think for a second that Nintendo has been cooking a "New new 3DS XXL" in secret just in case the Switch fails, then I have to assume you dont know much about tech development. They would have had to already start development on it last year to have anything ready to save the Switch. It's not happening, and the Switch is a handheld.
(Console hybrid :p)

I just want a one-Nintendo-console future.

If Switch isn't it, then that really kills the appeal. We already know Nintendo can't support their own hardware singlehandedly.

That's basically what we would get.

I don't know, the following example in the below quote with the Switch Mini looks like it would give me hand cramps.

The buttons and sticks for the Joy-Cons on the Switch go from the top to the center of the controller, the Switch Mini example below goes from top to bottom reducing space and since it lacks a grip... I know it will be exactly like handling the original 3DS which is horrible, basically the Dpad would be not preferable unless you have a grip attached.

My idea of what a handheld only Switch could be like.
It would just be the current Switch, but with no detachable joy-cons. So in my edit I removed the connecting rails and that allows the system to be a little shorter. Then I am able to put normal full sized face buttons and move them closer toward the screen. I also added a real D-pad.

Here is the system next to the New 3DS for size comparison.
I resized the systems using the 3DS D-pad as a point of reference.
So the buttons and D-pad are the same size on all devices.
The top version maintains the original Switch screen size.
The Micro version shrinks the screen to match the size of the New 3DS top screen.

I think people are too hung on the images and not listening to Nintendo.
PORTABLE HOME CONSOLE.

But hey if people want to pay to play Pokemon online I guess there's that...

Would like to see Sony get it together but maybe not since my problem with the vita was more of the types of games. So I would like to see a 3ds with 2 real uhhh thumb st... Circlepad? And a higher res screen.

Some people here disregard the Switch as a handheld because of reasons.

It's a pretty clear reason being that Nintendo themselves refuse to refer to it as a handheld. They have repeatedly and consistently referred to it as a home console and the successor to the Wii U.

A Nintendo branded Vita without the proprietary memory cards.

Loved my Vita.
Man do I have some great news for you.

You're right. Switch is a home console only and PlayStation 3 clearly only did everything.

They aren't going to make a separate 3DS like platform. That is impossible. Any future hardware will play the same switch cartridges and thus be a single screen device. There is debate about whether they will release a Switch mini sort of platform but another separate "DS" hardware line with different software is absolutely out of the question.

Nintendo would never release a different handheld platform that doesn't play Switch games and runs Switch internals this generation.

I think they'll keep supporting the 3DS until they can drop the price of the Switch to $199. Then they will drop 3DS support and be 100% developing for Switch. There will be no 3DS successor other than the Switch.

But there will be a switch lite

Their next handheld HAS to have better graphics than the Switch IMO. if they release a new handheld with less graphic fidelity than the switch itself i don't see that new handheld to sell well along side the switch.

If it's not a handheld what do you call this:

It's a handheld that can be used just like a traditional console. I don't see Nintendo releasing a totally different product. That's just stupid. Unless the Switch bombs then they'll put out a full blown handheld that replaces the 3DS. the Switch is obviously meant to replace the 3DS and not just Wii U. If it was just the Wii U they wouldn't have made it portable/handheld.

Is not portable and 3 hours battery.

It's like the definition of portable has to be changed to mean, "must fit into a pocket, regardless of being able to carry it through other means."

Imagine if we were a camera forum.

"Oh look, Nikon is releasing a new DSLR camera!"

"It's not portable, can't fit it in my pocket."

Something Gameboy sized. Something you can put in your pocket. Handhelds haven't been that in over a decade but I'd like to see it return.

As someone who was only interested in Nintendo handhelds and never their home consoles, I don't even want a smaller Switch now because I just fell in love with the current implementation. And I didn't want detachable controllers nor a screen bigger than 5" prior to the Switch reveal.
They just need to get the price down when they can.
It's clear to me that this will be the successor to the 3DS in 2018

I want a handheld that has a proper battery life and is from Sony instead of Nintendo. Simple as that.

As someone else said, Vita + proper memory card support + moderate bump in power would be enough for me. I don't even really care if it's 720p or no (and maybe I'd prefer it not to be to preserve Vita + PSP playback without weird upscaling).

Edit: That said, the Switch is exactly the idea I wanted from Nintendo. So, I'm excited about that, but not totally thrilled with the execution.

Yes. If Nintendo releases a new portable (that doesn't share it software library with the Switch), then they've not only screwed themselves, but also Switch owners who bought in on the premise that all those formerly portable games would be on the Switch.

Yup, I fully expect something akin to that middle one to exist at some point.

I can see a pocket version of the Switch becoming a thing for sure, but I really don't see Nintendo creating another ecosystem. Assuming the Switch is a success, of course.

Literally from the main Nintendo Switch product page:

Nintendo Switch is designed to go wherever you do, transforming from home console to portable system in a snap.

There is no fucking reason to have this debate anymore. Nintendo has already told us what Switch is.

This also means Nintendo is going to have the only major portable system on the market for the first time since they started making portable systems.

None for me. I sold off my portables last year as I just don't have a use for them anymore. Little interest in gaming anywhere but my mancave, have some neck issues that make portables hard to use unless laying down (so useless on planes etc) and my near vision is starting to get worse as I close in on 40 so they've just lost all appeal. I wish there was a cheaper console only version if Switch.

Something along the lines of the New Nintendo 3DS.

Heck if they offered another new revision in a year or two with increased power, I'd buy that. The size of the thing is perfect to slip into my pocket every day and take with me.

I don't think people put handhelds in their pocket

I'd say a Switch V2. The bezels on the sides reduced. Same height so compatible with JoyCons. Better battery life if Nintendo get a more efficient processor in their.

They can just sell it as 2 SKUs in fall 2018 with a $100 price drop for the dock SKU

Switch with Dock/Grip - $200
Switch without Dock - $170

Dock Sold Separately - $50

No, it isn't.

With poor battery life and the need of two Joy-Cons (otherwise good luck playing only with touch) being portable means moving between the rooms of your home.

I'll repeat my other post..

Vita 3-5 hours
3DS 3-5 hours
n3DS 3.5-6 hours

Keeping these framerate results in mind, meaning that the phone/tablet is actually clocking to actually give a decent performance..

I guess this makes none of those a true portable for gaming. We're talking about hardware that are 2 to 4 times more expensive than Switch, including the much larger ipad pro 9.7" which has a battery over 2 times the switch's.

So, no portable, at least for gaming, exist in modern times, that's what you're saying?

I would sell my switch for that Micro version in a heartbeat.

I don't think people put handhelds in their pocket.

All day, every day.

So basically... You want a Switch with two screens?

I want there to be an Etrian Odyssey 6 to be able to be played no differently than all the other EO titles, if it's on the 3DS or not. If not, I am really hoping that the new handheld can cover the dual-screen-with-bottom-screen-touch-controllable gimmick that an Etrian Odyssey 6 will basically require. This is my personal 'must' for the new handheld system to have.

So sure, Switch with two screens sounds logically reasonable to expect.

But so would a '3DS Nitro'.

It is both, but when it launches in March it will still be occupying the "home console" space of the Nintendo lineup. Once 3DS software releases stop happening, previously handheld-exclusive series end up switch-exclusive, etc, then I will see it more as a handheld.

But yes, purely form factor wise of course it is both.

How much are you willing to pay for if the system could do all that?

If they actually did all those things I'd pay more than 300$

Hell, bring back Badge arcade, speakers in the joycons, themes, and cover plates and they could probably charge me anything they want.
