If You Could Have Any Superpower...

I'd want to be able to be invisible. I don't want to rule the world or anything, I just want to take whatever I want and do just about anything unnoticed.

You know it's only a matter of time before somebody puts the pieces together. Somebody saw your car in the vicinity of the place that was robbed, you were caught on camera going invisible, you use marked bills by mistake, something gets traced back to you...and now you're living your entire life invisible instead of just when you steal.

Make duplicates of myself. Then send them all out to get jobs and become rich from hard work then absorb them and keep the money. :) Simple life is all I need.

Guys, you need to stop saying "X person's powers", because almost always that's not one power, but like a bunch of them rolled into one. Stick to basics.

Any power comes with minor secondary powers that would be needed in order for those powers to work and for you not to die when you use them.

Exactly. Teleportation means the ability to not accidentally teleport into a wall and kill yourself, and the ability to teleport a certain number of objects around you as well (clothes, fillings, pacemaker, the food you just ate and the stuff in your intestines).

Somehow the ability to make it so that you don't have to fall a few inches everywhere you teleport (so that grass doesn't intersect your feet etc.). I guess displacing whatever is in your destination to the place you came from, including air? But then you leave grass clippings in the shape of your shoe size behind every time you go to a grassy area.

Teleportation. It's fun and not so powerful that you develop a Spider-man complex of having "great power".

Great minds...

I wouldn't want teleportation with all the noise that Nightcrawler's makes though. That's like way too obvious. I'd be down with shapeshifting though, Mystique style.

You'd need to stay incognito about it or find yourself locked in a cage underground with wars being fought over you (I guess you'd be able to read a lot of books still though!). You'd have to pick and choose how you want to influence the world, if at all, drop by silently with random acts of kindness, help out loved ones, etc. Even then, if you healed high profile people you'd probably be figured out eventually, unless you could do it at range and not just up close of course, in which case none of that really applies if you're vaguely discreet.

I like it, though. Being able to heal your wounds at will is in many ways cooler than being outright invulnerable, since invulnerability takes some of the excitement and adventure out of life (plus there's the chance your invulnerable ass falls into a crevasse...). And being able to heal people I care about, that kind of sounds a lot better than any mainly self-centered superpower, TBH. Fuck off, cancer!

Of course discretion is key, but the beauty of 'healing', especially if you can heal yourself, is gene manipulation. You could change your features, hair color, eye color, height, etc (eventually) and by turning it on and off (I want it to be a conscious effort) you can still age. Unless they had some way of detecting your power they'd have a helluva time pinning you down.

Also, there'd have to be limits to it. The trap we see almost every powerful/immortal super powered being fall into is detachment from humanity. I wouldn't want to be able to bring people back from the dead or have unlimited energy to heal. It'd need to recharge. Losing total perspective would ruin the point I'd want to make with the power.

In the end my greatest fear is that if I had a superpower, I'd somehow be unable to save those I love best. Having healing as that power satisfies both my desire to protect those close to me/help others and to protect my own selfish desire to live a bit longer and read lots of books/see everything on Earth and beyond. :)

healing everyone sounds just as selfish. imagine a world where people don't die. uh-oh.. we got a problem. and being invulnerable just means you haven't met your match. ;)

Regarding this, of course I wouldn't use it to heal the world. The dangers of overpopulation are obvious. We have disease/aging for a reason. I wouldn't try to fuck with the order of things on a huge scale. What I would like to do is help those I can and help those that I think could/do contribute to a better humanity. Naturally all this is subjective. It's who I think contributes best to humanity, and I wouldn't be omniscient or anything so I couldn't save anyone I didn't know about. I'd just like to use it to prop up some of the good humanity. I'd probably also put in a clause for rich people that if I healed them they'd have to use half their fortune to save the environment or invest in better education, etc.

Just good old-fashioned flight. I don't want to mind control people, blow shit up or kill anybody. I just want the ability to fly around like Superman, checking shit out, visiting cool places and having a good time doing so.

Some of y'all are proving why Tony Stark was right all along...mostly a ton of super villains ITT.

Everywhere you go, leaving the abbreviation for "bad ass mother fucker" floating in midair.

I dunno, I don't think teleportation is a very sexy power either. It's too practical for the purposes of magic powers. As I said, I think Mystique style shapeshifting is one of the ones that wouldn't make you able to fight anyone you want or anything, but would be insanely useful. However, I do think it would probably make you literally insane relatively quickly.

Telekinesis would be my power of choice. Especially if it could be used to make yourself fly.

so where's Bubastis

Reminds me of Marvelman, also Watchman.

:D

Ozy chose the option available to him based on his personal capacity and resources, as dark as it was. With a powerful mind control option, for example, getting the same sort of result could be handled in far less bloody fashion, and I'd consider the ends almost inarguably worthwhile.

Of course, first things first, before the world reshaping and uniting, Mitt Romney would come out as a transsexual atheist and donate his entire fortune to saving children in Africa :D

What this thread really is, more than anything, though, is a personality test. Your choice reflects your personality and character. That I basically chose the Ozymandias route (as far as intentions, regardless of the specifics of the power used to get there) says something interesting, worth some introspection, yeah.

Choosing invisibility also says something interesting:
that you're a creeper.

I forgot about telekinesis.

Admission: sometimes I still try to move the saltshaker with my mind, but it doesn't really seem to work too well.

I guess my problem with invisibility is that it literally has no practical use outside of a "being a superhero/supervillain" context. Why would you need to be invisible when you had the choice of shapeshifting or something?

I pretty much want to make a better world and let people enjoy a happy and peaceful existence, so my choice would be reality warping.

Superintelligence would be my second pick if it allows me to get similar results, but with just superintelligence there could be problems I wouldn't be able to solve. Plus if I have reality warping I would have superintelligence anyway as I would want to use the power to its full potential.

Hmm, I just noticed something. Nobody wants the ability to fire energy projectiles from there hands, eyes, or other parts of there body(j/k, lets not go there)? No Cyclops or Havok wannabes? How about Ryu, or better yet, Goku? Any takers?

New 52 Captain Atom - We havent fully seen his strength, but we have seen his future selves and they are crazy.
kDGab.jpg

The Silver Surfer - The only reason he isnt my first vote is because i dont want the silver skin(which is part of his power)

Got energy projectiles covered.....and alot more too.

Oh, and I'd almost certainly be a super villain of some sort. I'll formulate my plan for global domination and post it. =p

You're looking too much into this, except for the part about being invisible.

The personality assessment part is usually based more on the answer to the question "flight or invisibility" instead of the open-ended "pick any power".

If someone says that they would like to be able to swim at 50 miles per hour, I'm not sure what you could guess about that person.

Indestructable... as I won't age, I can not die and I will be around for eternity, I'd like to record history and just watch things unfold.

A good discrete, yet useful power would be the ability to fluently speak and understand all languages. Not only spoken ones, but also programming and math. You could just disguise it as being really smart.

Selective phasing. I would let Police, bullets, handcuffs, jail cell walls, everything I choose to pass through me. Meanwhile, the things I choose not to phase through would be hot girls. Definitely will be enjoying them while no one can stop me because everyone else will phase right through me. And if they try to pull her away from me while I'm touching her, my phasing power would make them phase right through her too.

Mind control. But only if it's undetectable, I don't have to be concentrating the whole time, can be turned off/on at will, and can hit anyone anywhere.

I would just have people give me money and do whatever I want them to. "Hey, that's a nice car, you should give it to me for free. That's a nice mansion for sale, you should sell it to me for $1." etc

Yeah I would totally abuse that power. Kristen Bell, here I come(pun intended).

It'd be pretty shitty after about 5 billion years from now when the Sun swallows the Earth during its conversion to a Red Giant and you are consumed by the white hot flames of a dying star for 250 million years after which you are given the release of floating through the near absolute zero of space for all eternity.

I really liked Carl Pilkington's idea for a super power so I will just copy his...

I'd be Bullshit Man. Pointing out bullshit to everyone who needs me to. I could see through everyone's bullshit. I'd just point and shout, "that's bullshit!" and leave.

Of course I'd need to have super extraordinary hearing so I could tell when bullshit was going down. And be able to fly, since I'd need to get to the bullshitters and bullshitees quickly, but those aren't my super powers no, just conveniences I'd require.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD, CHARLES!

You see this motherfucker right here? His name is Bernard.

The_Watch.jpg

And that's his motherfucking watch.

When he presses the... top... thing on the top of the watch, shit gets awesome. Because time stops when he presses that shit. Now, Bernard is like 9 or 10 or some shit, so he uses this power to do his homework that he forgot, or skip to the front of queues in shops when buying sweets (leaving money on the counter because he's always a kind fucker).

However, they never show what happens when Bernard here hits puberty. Obviously, because that shit is too hot for TV. You know he's using that watch to wank in shops or feel up his mate's mum, nicking crates of Stella from Tesco and getting pissed in the middle of Maths.

The fan-fiction for this shit must be insane.

I still stand by flying, I get tired of LA traffic for real. Otherwise.. The ability to rewind time by 1 minute would be pretty awesome. Also having a portable hole (Roger Rabbit) would be neat.. Someone should make a movie about either of those!

Growing/shrinking would be pretty nuts too, although potentially very dangerous/destructive.

Why is it that whenever you ask someone "if you could have any X" they will always try to find a way to skirt the spirit of the rules and given themselves many Xs. i.e. "I would wish for 10 billion wishes," or "I would want the power to get more powers," or just copying the powers of some superhero who has like fifty powers.

The selfish part of me would like to have humanoid shapeshifting powers, to the extent that I could change between sexes and have full function of either. Pretty much Mystique's powers.

The altruistic side of me would prefer to have very strong healing and/or even resurrection powers, so that I could just go around and heal the sick/injured/etc. and perhaps bring back those who have died in unfortunate circumstances. I guess the most equivalent person I can think of is Mr. Linderman from Heroes, although I don't recall if he could resurrect the already dead.

It might be cool, but the biggest reason I wouldn't want that power is that you'd eventually be captured for study since you have no offensive of defensive capability at all. Unless we're thinking about a world in which either powers are common or nobody cares you have magic powers.

I read a doujin based around this subject. Both from a male and female perspective.

Wait, was it two different hypothetical scenarios, with genders reversed between the two, or was it the same scenario from two different perspectives? If it was the latter, I expect terrible things.

Perhaps I could use the powers remotely instead of having to use direct contact. Of course I'm sure someone would figure out that I was in the area every time it happened.

This is going to come off strange, but the power to be happy. Recall the happiest you've ever been in your life. Now imagine being that way until you die. No need to rely on love, god or any other bullshit that comes with all sorts of baggage.

Being in a state of pure bliss until death. Give me that please.

I'm basically too selfish to pick a power like that, anyways.

Professor X's power. Best power you could ever have. One thought into Dr Manhattan's mind and he could make him kill himself.
