If you don't use a mic on XBL...

But truly, I believe most people just have social anxiety and are intimidated by others online.

Most people use the "idiots" explanation as a way to express their distaste of voice chat without delving into the deeper, psychological reasons.
Since when is not wanting to talk to random strangers on the internet considered to be some kind of abnormal "social anxiety"? Most people go out of their way to avoid interacting with people that don't have some kind of personal rapport with them, unless it's for business.

(I realize there's some irony in saying this as I'm posting with strangers on an internet forum)

Show us some proof. I just think its pretty bold to diagnose such a large group of strangers. I have known people who are just shy, but I know a lot more who just don't want to be screamed at.

I don't have any proof, it's just what I see - my opinion.
If you read my original post that caused all this you can see I use phrases like I agree and I believe.

When I said I believe i'm pointing out that it is my opinion.
I can't prove anything to you, it's just what I believe to be true from my observations online and overall on the human mind.

I respect your opinion, and hopefully you can respect mine.

Maybe if you were better at the game people wouldn't be calling you "fag".
Your joking... right? Sometimes can't tell.
Either way, it doen't seem to matter. If you won your a "fag" if you lost your a "fag"

What I want to know is, isn't there worse things I could be? Why is that word even in the equation? People are sickening...

xbox live chat SUX. unless it's an organised team game.
Didn't you know on xbox live all Europeans are gay, cunts, or jews, all blacks are n****rs, darkies, c**ns, or dark jews, all gays are bad for the human race, cock suckers, or go against the bible and all women are whores, bitches, c**ts, cock suckers, or idiots that hate real a man.

Play with gaffers.

I do for the most part, but I can't always play the game I want with the person I want, so randoms are the next best thing. And this idea that Gaffers aren't crazy, well you haven't played with some of them.

Edit: Bowen :lol

Social anxiety is in no way "abnormal".
It's extremely common and most people have some form of it.

in my opinion : )

according to Wiki <15% at any given time. Yeah, its a large amount, but not enough to constitute a majority of people on live who don't use headsets... seems a little rude to offhandedly suggest they do.

I'd rather not give anyone a chance to call me anything or let me hear them say anything stupid or sick. My mic is connected but it's laying on the ground with the volume all the way down.

You guys are all exaggerating the problem, my gamertag is Queers of War and it's pretty rare for me to have fag screamed down my ear.
A lot of the racist chatter usually happens during ranked matches, the first few weeks when a game is released, or Halo.

So far, TF2 has been racist free. :D

I think Bowen was saying the racists were less annoying than people who don't use their mics online and I tend to agree. It has something to do with the fact that they only show up only 1 out of every 10 games or so for me in Halo and not at all in TF2 as opposed to a lack of mics for coordination which happens in almost every single match. People here overstate the presence of the kid/racist/jerk issue horribly. Sometimes I wonder if those of you claiming as such have even played online or, even if you done so, played for a decent number of matches to get a grip on on the overall population. Besides, you can mute the racists, you can't unmute non-mic people.

I know quite a few people, who are very, very popular, and I know them closely.
On the outside they can appear as the most confident person you know but from the talks I have had with many confident people, there is usually an intense storm of emotions going on underneath the facade.

Anxiety.
Questioning themselves... a destructive ego.

I don't think the 15% is right.
Of course, I could be wrong... BUT I HIGHLY DOUBT IT!

:lol

I'll just end it here. It's frustrating for me to discuss this issue through a keyboard... hard to process the thoughts correctly. I'd have to talk to you in person to really get the point across the way I intend.

Yeah, its pretty constant in Halo for some reason.

I think it's leading a life of its own and people are just re-iterating group think.

I got sick of telling the 10 year olds who just beat my ass in Halo 3 to go to bed.

So now I only use the mic when I'm playing with friends.

Its not just racists we're talking about though. Its just assholes.

Then throw them into that percentage as well. Seriously. I rarely even get these groups of idiots you guys describe and I play a lot of Halo 3 and TF2. More often than not, though, I will get people who don't talk. And, like I said before, you can mute any idiot you want in Halo 3, but when it comes to people who want talk or work as a team, there is absolutely nothing you can do.

Like I said, I stopped playing team games unless it was with friends so I may know less. Back when I tried it sucked though. All through the original xbox it sucked too.
Are you black or another race? A man with a feminine voice? A woman? Maybe you are, but otherwise you can't really say for sure can you?
What if you are really bad at the game? Does it mean you deserve to be trashed on and called names? Doesn't everyone have to start somewhere?

Edit: last time I tried was Halo 3 launch... it was still as shitty as ever. I should add that when a person treats you like "less than human" 1/10 games, it doesn't make the other 9 much fun.

A real way to solve this would be to convince Microsoft that racism and sexism is a real problem on Live. That they need to hire people who randomly join public games and just start banning people left and right with video and audio copies of their session that they can hold onto for a week or two to back up their claim if someone wants to contest it. Make a public announcement when you sign onto live that anyone cause saying racist, sexist or other derogatory comments will get no warnings and be banned off live with no refund to their account. It wont stop everyone, but you can bet a lot of people will hold back a bit more if they are in fear that the person they're cussing at is a Microsoft employee monitoring the games.

No, this wouldn't be a good "business" decision for Microsoft. But I think if this makes enough news they may be forced into doing it, and with a little thinking they could easily spin this into a good thing for future owners of the system.

Perhaps some aspiring game journalists could use this as a story to work on or something.

It is a problem. I remember a kid getting banned from XBL during the H3 beta because his luck ran out. He insulted the wrong woman and then went on to bungie's forums and tried to get is ban removed by lying about what happened.

Halo 3 socials is fine, haven't had any real problems with people taking things to oseriously. Ranked solo is oaky, and ranked team can get pretty sad but for the msot part it's not too bad.

Nothing on the 360 beats Gears though as far as % of assholes, NOTHING. That game BREEDS hostility and douchebaggery.

I hate them white kids with their whiny pre-pubescent whiny voice "Veto, veto!". I prefer the british kids cuz of their use of profanity in a classy way, "You fuckin wanker!"

There is a lot of hostility in GOW because the game is very random.

Look at Marcus. He is a mega-douche himself.:lol

:lol at people in this thread saying Halo doesnt require tactics. Play any good team and you'll lose so fast your head will spin.

As for no mics, yeah it sucks when you get some retard without a mic on your team in objective who wont pick up the bomb or the flag but what can ya do?

On the topic of things that piss you off in Halo 3: I hate hate hate the douches that don't have a mic and refuse to play with the team. And at the start of the game they run straight to the missile pod or lasor or whatever the vehicle stopper on the level is, pick it up, and then die 2 seconds later giving the other team the weapon. Or better yet they will grab the power weapons and camp our spawn or run off into a corner.

I'm begining to see a trend...:lol

I rather not have to respond to some kid that sounds like he just inhaled helium. Speaking of that...is there a feature of live to change your voice? I notice a lot of people sound like kids.

So instead of taking one second to mute someone because they have a high pitched voice that annoys you (weak excuse) you don't use your headset to communicate to your team.

Stick to lone wolf.

People who kick people who don't have one either can die too please.

When I'm host I kick anyone that comes in without a mic. So do all my friends.

I'll continue to do this pretty much as long as I play online games. These are TEAM games. Communication is key.

How many people have you played with that have no mics? When we're playing, say, Narrows Bomb and 3 of us are in the other teams base spawn killing them for 2 minutes while the micless moron is running around aimlessly meleeing walls, you can see where the generalisation comes from that no mic = fucking idiot.

I don't think Halo 3's online gameplay is reliant upon mic-usage in any significant way whatsoever. It's ridiculous to chastise gamers who don't use their mics. Not everyone is an attention whore who needs to be heard at all times.

I've seen people play like that WITH headsets. Its doesn't seem to be exclusive.

A. You are playing in lone wolf only.
B. You are playing the game wrong.

Yes, because wanting to coordinate your team in CTF is being an attention whore.
