IGN: 15 Most Heartbreaking Game Cancellations

Zero Escape 3

what?

That was cancelled, the hell

Surprised that Prey 2 didn't make the list. I know Bethesda insists that it's not cancelled, but when you throw away years of work and give a new team who are completely indifferent to the series a blank slate to do whatever they want with it, guess what? It's cancelled.

The Sphere in Prey was a Harvest Sphere. In the original Prey 2, it was going to be revealed the Keepers were building a War Sphere to destroy Earth. Halfway through the game its massive presence is revealed hovering right over the alien city. You spent the last part of the game fighting your way through that Sphere with Tommy. That was one of the big twists and surprises. At this point though, it's fairly clear no one's ever going to play that version.

The version that Human Head was working on has been cancelled. Another version is apparently in development though. If you include cancelled versions of games that were eventually released, then RE1.5 and 3.5 would definitely make the list. Particularly 3.5 since it was classic RE.

I know that every Xbox Live subscriber during the original Xbox era still feels the True Fantasy Live Online cancellation. Really broke my heart that one.

I did not know FF64 was a demo. I remember reading in Nintendo Power that it was scheduled to be released.

A lot of magazines ran with the idea that it was actually a game. I think it all started with GameFan. And few if any actually admitted that they were wrong about it. Which is why the belief that it was a cancelled title still hangs around today.

1. Project HAMMER. Not only did the game look cool and was pretty an ex-EAD heavy development team at NST. The cancellation of the project basically created a mass exodus of staff from the developer.

2. Warrior's Lair. Why the heck did SCE cancel this game. It would have been an amazing PS3 / PS Vita cross platform game. Even better, a PS4 / PS Vita title. We all love Diablo clones, and there are not enough of them.

My two picks.

MechWarrior 5

I never understood why this series and Baldur's Gate 3 never made it out.

I thought both series were popular?

Final Fantasy VI: The Interactive CG Game, also known as the Final Fantasy SGI demo, was a short demonstration produced by Square using characters and settings from Final Fantasy VI. Produced using new Silicon Graphics, Inc. (SGI) Onyx and Indy2 workstations acquired by Square. 3D models were made in Alias|Poweranimator and Animated in Softimage|3d.

The demo was Square's first foray into realtime 3D graphics, and many assumed it was a precursor to a new Final Fantasy title for the Nintendo 64 video game console, which also utilized SGI hardware. Square, however, had not yet committed to Nintendo's console at the time of the demo's production, and much of the technology demonstrated in the demo was later put to use in the rendering of full motion video sequences for Final Fantasy VII and subsequent games for the PlayStation.

“In August of '95, one of the US's largest CG conventions, SIGGRAPH, was held in Los Angeles. At that time we were not sure what the next generation RPG game should look like, so as an experiment we created a CG based, game like, interactive demo to be presented at the show. It focused on battle scenes that were 100% real time and polygon based.”

Yeah, Arkane Austin is working on a Prey game (either Prey 2 or Prey: Exodus).

While I'm all for an Arkane-developed spiritual successor to System Shock (I dug the f*ck out of Arx), I'm not too cool with them taking another IP hostage to live out their personal fantasies. Seems kinda dickish and disrespectful to the franchise.

Mother (Earthbound) 64 would be one I wish came out. I guess I can't really complain as Mother 3 supposedly used the same story.
