IGN: 15 Most Heartbreaking Game Cancellations

The true most heartbreaking Game Cancellations are the ones that are never vocally confirmed as cancelled.

As for the list, interestingly enough, the only one's I've actually heard of would be Starcraft Ghost and Star Wars 1313. I still remember the beginning stages of Ghost's announcement. So sad...

Was so looking forward to GHOST. Even though I didn't know a lick about the StarCraft lore, it still looked like it would have been a great game.

1313 is another game that was looking fantastic and just fell by the wayside. ;_;

Nothing in that list is heartbreaking except for Dead Phoenix and Streets of Rage. People should be glad to see a few cancelled EA and Molyneaux games as that saves us the wasted time of caring about them only to be inevitably disappointed with a shit product.

The fact the list misses the following is an indictment:

The City of Metronome
Oddworld Fangus
Beyond Good and Evil 2
The Last Guardian
Shenmue 3
Half Life 3/ep3

They have Fallout Online but not Van Buren :lol

Also didn't Baldur's Gate 3 get cancelled in favor of one of the console Dark Alliance games? That's pretty tragic.

Shadowgate Rising (N64) and Earthbound 64 (64DD) are my top two.

At least we got Mother 3, and the Shadowgate franchise is alive again.

Nothing on that IGN list interested me in the least.
Don't even know what most of them were.

Why would they list games that aren't cancelled or never existed?

I was really stoked for B.C. Then it was cancelled.

Also was really bummed about the pirate game that ended up being Pirates of the Caribeean.

Surprised that Prey 2 didn't make the list. I know Bethesda insists that it's not cancelled, but when you throw away years of work and give a new team who are completely indifferent to the series a blank slate to do whatever they want with it, guess what? It's cancelled.

This was my first thought too. The game Human Head was working on looked incredible, and the trailer was dynamite. There seemed to be so much potential there. Really a shame what happened. I understand Arkane's working on it now, but I still wish we'd have gotten the game Human Head was making.

Say what you want but this is relevant to my interests. Snoop and John Singleton? Count me in

Still got that issue somewhere I think. Least I know I did when I was younger. Remember reading how you could turn the gun sideways lol.

OT:
Haven't looked at the link but recently Lily Bergamo to Let It Die made me feel many types of ways smh. I'm all for Suda51 most times but I could not support that move smh...terrible.

"final fantasy 64" was never a game.. just a tech demo at most

but yeah as a nintendo kid myself it was traumatizing. also still pissed the robotech N64 game was cancelled. it looked cool

Yea, and it was a demo of FF6 characters.

Locke looked real cool in it though

I can't be sad over The Last Guardian.
We barely saw anything of it.

B.C and Pirates of the Caribbean are the best on the list.
B.C. had dinosaurs so enough said there. Caribbean looked to be the title that would have put Propganda games on the map.

This list is terrible because the vast majority of these had no pre-existing investment from the gamer in the game universe that was teased and not delivered.

Zero Escape 3 not happening? Now that's heartbreaking.

Also, before I head out, no mention of Metroid Dread either? That was officially cancelled afaik and considering Other M was released around the cancellation, that must have hurt

To everyone saying, "FF64 was just a tech demo".

Sure now years after, when many articles covering this topic we know this. Forget what you know now, travel back in time when you were a younger you. Go to a store buy a Nintendo Power or other magazines and flip to the pages where they're showing FF64 off on the Ultra 64. Back then this felt like a cancelation.

Six Days in Fallujah sounds interesting. A survival horror military sim.

At least we still got Spec Ops.

No one remembers like half of these anymore.

Six Days in Fallujah was likely just going to be your run of the mill low budget shooter with some crappy controversial story.

I've always been kinda upset about Chakan 2 being cancelled. I remember seeing some demo footage of Chakan swinging his swords and jumping around, and seeing some artwork in a mag. Oh well.

Never officially announced, let alone officially canceled.

Really strange of them to miss Mega Man Legends 3 though.

PC Cocoron
Ys IV Mega CD
Star Fox 2
Dragon Hopper
D2 M2
Geist Force
Earthbound 64
LandStalker PSP
Cry On
Space Agency
Bomberman 3DS
Bumpy Trot 2
Mega Man Legends 3
Rodea the Sky Soldier (?)

It had the same characters as FF6. Even back then FF had absolutely never made a second FF game that used the same characters (and the subtitles/sequels didn't happen for years)

MechWarrior 5

I never understood why this series and Baldur's Gate 3 never made it out.

I thought both series were popular?

IIRC Balder's Gate 3 was cancelled because Interplay lost the D&D license.

Edit: They lost the license for PC, but it was extended for consoles as a result. So it was canceled in favour of Dark Alliance II basically. Similar situation to Fallout 3 and the fan favourite Fallout: BOS.

Especially since its been a decade, and I still cannot find anything that is even similar.

Wild gave me BC vibes when I first saw it.(Granted I've never seen BC in motion.I've only seen it in screenshots;though after seeing the trailer for BC,The Forest sort of seems more like it than Wild does.

Not incredibly heart broken but I wish we could have seen something about that game that Sci-fi game that Santa Monica was working on. It sounded cool

This much was obvious back then, but the illusion and sales pitch made by news outlets at the time was this was a real thing coming. I mean this was the mid 90s, you didn't have much to go on other than what you were being told. When multiple magazines are talking about a game and a potential release you start believing.

Ha! Made you cry, Gooch has done it again!

;_______; How could anyone not cry with this game. Its not even like it was a small project, there's tons of huge ass production value in what screens we have. Cavia's dark setting, characterization and great atmosphere, Mistwalkers actual game making ability....FFFF

LOOK AT THIS SHIT BRO! HOW COULD THEY DO THIS!?

The White Council is the one that bugs me. Elder Scrolls in Middle Earth, how cool would that have been?

Dreamland Chronicles is one they missed, it was basically an X-com reboot

And the PSP release of that East of Eden JRPG (Has a Japanese name). They put out a press release and screenshots, so it must have been close to done, but it was quietly cancelled.
