IGN: 6 things Microsoft needs to do after PS4

Can someone explain to me why so many people are acting as if their current gen systems will self-destruct as soon as they buy the new ones? BC is great and all, but it's not THAT big of a hassle to just leave your PS3 or 360 hooked up when you get a PS4/Durango.

If it were actually important to include BC, both PS4 and Durango would have hardware BC.

In this day in age when online communitys are a huge part of why buyers game online i think BC should be a main focus. it would be nice to be able to play your older games with your friends without having to drag-out an older-system.

well electronics aren't exactly reliable so they could actually self destruct. some people like selling their old hardware as well.

Bingo. If NeoGaf enthusiasm is a measuring stick for the success of a device, the Vita would be the best selling system of all time. Hell, games that were tremendous sales busts like Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale have tens of thousands of posts.

It's impossible to say at this point what system will cater better to the "core gamer" (whatever that means). More importantly, I don't think it really matters which one is the preference of the core gamer.
 
Lets just call off the Console War for the next six years.

Clearly Sony has won on a TKO with their 8GB of GDDR5 RAM.

Its all about the PS4 - PC war now.

A more reasonable list:

1) Show how the rumored media features and OS inter·weaves through the console and other devices

2) How Kinect V2 is the ultimate natural user interface device, and what it means for games as well

3) Showcase games that scream next-gen - something, I think, Sony didn't do.

4) Show the actual console - Sony got ridiculed for this by the mainstream press, and lets face it we want to see it too.

It is a big deal for people that don't have the previous consoles or do not want to have 2 consoles connected to their TV.

We are never going to see another Crackdown after the second one bombed. Microsoft isn't Sony, they know when to stop cranking out IPs that nobody wants to buy.

I am thinking they will have a couple new, very hot looking IPs to launch with, and have enough exclusive stuff with GTA/CoD/Bethesda to make Sony a non-factor this fall, at least in the US.

Finally, nobody gives a shit about BC. Name one console that was at a serious competitive disadvantage because of it.
 
The reason I think backwards compatibility is so important to Microsoft, is because their number one competitor is going to have a console that is clearly more capable from a technical standpoint. That means there is a higher chance of Sony stealing 360 bros, than there is of Microsoft stealing PS3 bros.

That problem can be further exacerbated if you tell all your 360 customers "your old games are not going to work on this new machine". In other words, your legacy with our previous console is kinda meaningless going forward.

I think that's a very sad list. Only number 3 is going to get most gamers really excited.

4 is kind of irrelevant. We'll see the PS4 in due time. It didn't have to get shown on February 20th.

I just meant something of that caliber. Maybe like a Fable or something; isn't there a Fable MMO that's been rumored to be in the works? Something like that.

Also, I would definitely agree with you that they're going to go after the exclusive DLC path, because it seems to have benefited them greatly this gen, and those are all likely suspects. A new Fallout with exclusive Nextbox DLC would be huge for them.

Take it or leave it, I am pretty confident this is what Microsoft will do because Durango is going to target more than just gamers. Also the event is going to have the mainstream press there as well; it's not just going to be gaming journalist.
 
If people are psyched about Microsoft moneyhatting third parties for timed exclusive deals then I don't know what to say.
 
It will be interesting to see if MS actually hits any of these points. I think we'll still get some interesting surprises with the reveal presentation, but it will also likely be a mixed-bag of the usual.

As far as the backwards compatibility issue, I wouldn't have been an earlier adopter of Wii U without the Wii support. I skipped Wii and I'm enjoying playing the games on Wii U immensely. Of course, I primarily bought it for HD Nintendo games, but it certainly was a selling point early on for me. It would be quite a large bullet point for MS if cross generation multiplayer games was on the table. Sadly I think we'll see very limited BC on the next system.

I don't think people base their next gen purchasing decisions on whether or not it can play the older games they've already played. I don't know how to make that any clearer.

It would be nice if my N64 played SNES games, but it sure as hell didn't stop me from buying the N64.

I do think we'd look at it differently if consoles followed the annual update model of cell phones. They don't.

I get it. You want backwards compatibility. I assume you regularly are playing games from the previous generation. You also play a lot of Xbox360 games, and intend to keep doing so for years to come ( but not actually on the 360).

You're so dedicated to playing those 360 games you'll refuse to buy the Durango if it doesn't play those games. Microsoft will lose you as a customer. I get your stance, right?

I don't think many people will join you, is all.

It's also dumb to expect people to buy into your digital ecosystem if those goods never transfer over.

Also I don't have enough HDMI inputs to keep everything plugged in and as someone already mentioned it would be a pretty big deal if I could just play BattleBlock Theater online with my friends on a 720 and not have to bust out my 360 for games that are releasing soon.

Except now they are expected to follow the model. That model didn't even exist when the Ps3 and 360 came out.

You really can't compare this situation to previous generations. It's a whole different ballgame now.

There is new iphone hardware every year. You think Sony and Microsoft are expected to have new consoles every year? I'm not talking about software updates here, I'm talking about new hardware every year. Phones do that - BC is important. Consoles do not - BC is not important. That's my stance.

I'll just flat out ask: are you saying you will not purchase the Durango if it doesn't have backwards compatibility? Do you feel many people will choose not to for that reason?

Edit: and to be clear, I'm not against BC, I'm just saying that I think that feature alone will not be a deal breaker. It will not change (most) people's purchasing decisions.

First of all, don't get me confused, BC will always be a + in my eyes. But it is just a nice perk and not a system seller IMO. It allows you to be able to sell your old console for some extra $, it allows you to worry about your inputs less, it allows you to not have to drag out an old console for a game you want to play, etc... But you lose no functionality of the original purchase. The game is still the game and it still plays on the platform you bought it for.
 
The next Xbox is all about Kinect. That will be the main focus in their reveal (rumored in April). I can also see Microsoft forcing developers to implement some sort of Kinect mechanic for their games on the next Xbox (That's what I think anyway since Kinect is such a big focus for the next Xbox).

All that Microsoft has to really do is make online gaming free on the their next console (I know, I know....very small chance of that happening). Then they will need to announce some big third and first party titles.

One thing that is rumored about the next Xbox is a direct connection to your cable TV service, turning your Xbox into a TV hub (much like the Wii U already does). That might show up as well.

But for me, it's all about the games. This past generation I didn't like Microsoft's business practices with their Xbox 360 (pay to play online, Netflix and other services behind a pay wall), so I really don't think I will purchase the next Xbox, unless Microsoft gives me a really, really good reason to do so.

you think the best first party games are going to be at launch? timed/3rd party exclusives is what is going to essential to separate the two IMO . im sure sony/ms both understand this. first party exclusives are just their to differentiate the two consoles.

It would also be nice if they made the console open to anyone, like they did with XNA and XLIG, but this time promise to make it more relevant for everyone involved (both developers and users) and a part of Windows 8/WP8 ecosystem. They should also change certification process for patches, updates and games themselves. 360 (and PS3) was somewhat hostile towards small developers, rectifying that with Durango.

But for the unveiling of the console the most important part is showing next-gen concepts that instantly make gamers enthusiastic.

No I don't want new consoles every year. What I do wan't is to have my digital games always with me on whatever the next console is from each company.

As for whether or not I'll purchase a Durango if it has backwards compatibility, I still cannot say. There's way more factors that will go into my decision on whether to upgrade and when I should upgrade.

But I do believe that backwards compatibility is HUGE now more than ever and I feel like it is a big enough deal that it could cripple Sony. I honestly think this a bigger mistake for them than $599 or having proprietary memory cards in the Vita.

I bought a new Halo after Halo 2. People bought a new Killzone after the first.

I don't pass on games just because the previous one was bad. I'm going to wait, see and judge for myself. I'll do the same for Dragon Age 3.

So you'd rather them buy it up all together so it never reaches other consoles?

I don't think you're realistic about how the business-side of this industry works. They're trying to give people reasons to play the games on their consoles and online networks instead of the competitions. That's why they try and lock up DLC, and that's why people play the big franchises like CoD on the 360. It's a business practice that works.
 
i predict battlefield 4 will be next gen with bigger maps, prob same number of players as pc, or they could surprise us all with battlefield 4 being in the future(battlefield 21xx)
