IGN Closes TeamXbox

Oh wow. I used go to that site alot back than. I stop going to that site years ago though. Still sucks to hear this.

PlanetDreamcast
Nintendophiles
TeamXbox

But considering the guy who wrote this has only work for the site for shy under two years.. doesn't even seem like any of the team around today was there in the sites glory days circa 2001-2006.

So, what was TeamXbox?

TeamXbox was two fan sites (msxbox (news central)and TeamXbox (lighthearted community site) entangled into one to make a mega site

The site used website design way ahead of its time, half the Internet uses the layouts it had (talking msxbox 1999/2000 era here)

True Teamxbox story:

I made a comment about how I wished I had an Xbox (the original one) to go along with my Gamecube. Keep in mind this was a joke.

Garp bought me one. Just went out and bought me an Xbox.

I remember that. GAF antiXbox brigade loathed you for that, myself included. It was brought up after almost every post about Xbox you made. That you did not buy it but get it for free thus your opinion is instantly invalid.

Any idea where Shockwave is now?

He's working on random stuff - doesn't have the heart to do something like TXB again- he was kinda crushed when IGN started stomping on TXB

(Trying to remember the conversation I had with him about a month ago about this)

Well, Gaf practically spearheaded the campaign to scam Pepsi and get everyone free Xbox 360s. People love free systems.

I have no idea where anyone is now.

IF ANYONE RECOGNIZES A NAME FROM THE GOLDEN TXB ERA AND KNOWS WHERE THE PERSON IS, PLEASE TELL ME

I remember Xmun, Dad, Inane, 2ndhandsmoke, chipopo and TFX, but i haven't seen posts from them in ages. Many of the older Mods and long time members there left when that business with Shockwave happened, some of them post at Gamertype and others to wecravegames.

I find it strange IGN has a bunch of gaming websites under their wings anyway. Since IGN basically covers everything videogames and more.

Dude, GAF HATED the entire site. Like something pathological. Back in the day even GAF mods were rabid anti-Xbox trolls.

PS: I also used to post there... under a different name.

It doesn't even surprise me. That's the kind of dedication the fanbase had there, that you simply had to respect.

Xmun
Garp
Dad
Inane Dork
2ndhandsmoke
x85
Chipopo
TFX
Sto0ge
I remember all of them. Smart and funny people.
Then the debates with DopeyFishX (which continued here). Not sure if Lazy8 was posting there as well or just here.

It's a shame to see this happen. I've been stringing for them for the last few months and while it might not exactly be the era that people are looking back on with fondness, the staff that have been propping it up were giving it their all. We had gotten back on Metacritic and were doing preview/interview/feature stuff again. We'd been writing reviews and setting up interviews and previews that we've had to pull as we learned the site had been closed (I was proofing our Dust review minutes before we got the news). I can tell you how earnest that message in the OP is.

I'd love to talk to any of the other alums that are coming out of the woodwork in this thread to give a better sense of history. The outpouring of support in the last couple of days has been huge and appreciated.

Also, will write about games for food.

I remember the epic fighting between GC and Xbox fanboys on TXB, truly incredible.

And when MS bought Rare.....dear lord.

Anyone remember rastalant? Greatest troll ever!

TXB was impressive back in the pre-IGN days.

But as what usually happens when a monolithic site buys a smaller site, the smaller one is left to slowly languish and die.

*looks toward Gamespot/Giant Bomb*

They need the space for ad inventory - you need constant pageview growth to bring in new advertisers - acquisition or network partners is one of the easiest ways to do that.

Also some names people are forgetting

Nitros
Iceman
Serenity
Cesar
Monaarts
Sol

(Part of the old crew)

If I forgot anyone... Sorry

And the odd appearance from Jeff henshaw (Microsoft hardware group)

Not being harsh, but I never understood having an Xbox-specific site when your own site does Xbox stuff. More in-depth coverage I guess?

IGN didn't start Team Xbox, the site started and then became part of its affiliate program, with some promotion/cross-coverage on IGN.com/GameSpy.com but mostly independent. I don't know how much IGN wanted to get into having a platform-specific site of every kind in its affiliate program, the interest I believe was more in that TXB was a pioneer in covering DLC and had connectivity hooks with Microsoft's feeds in ways that other sites (including IGN.com, even today) don't have. Similar sites for Sony and Nintendo never popped up and the PC DLC market never became a big deal, and the DLC craze calmed down to a more reasonable "buy what's good, and focus on the games."

Good little site, especially in its day, but there's not a lot of room anymore for good little sites unless they're run for fun rather than for profit.

It really turned to shit FAST after IGN bought it, but I ceased to visit the place due to the colossal fanboyism and unprofesionality of Cesar Berardini. It was ridiculous. His ramblings tainted the entire site for me. I left for GAF and never looked back.

Once a company like IGN owns a site like TXB can they not "release it" to current admins or something? Does it have to be shut down?

They can do whatever they want, but most often times when it happens they choose to fuck it up. Not just gaming forums, either.

Probably not going to be an outpouring of donations from GAF to the people who lost their jobs this time, though. Not after what happened to all that money last time.

1UP layoffs happened at the height of the site's popularity.

Whereas here it sounds like even the people who enjoyed TeamXbox have not actually been to the website in years.

Also my pre-gaf home. Sad. But we had all predicted this once IGN bought TXB back in 2005/6. That's how it always is--no, no, nothing will change--but it did of course because it always changes.

Spent a lot of internet hours on those forums. It's how I recognized speevy when I started lurking here. I guess that's that then.

So the owner was given the boot for how he ran Team Xbox, then Team Xbox was given the boot because it didn't meet demands.
I only know what team xbox is from the e3 2005 expo where IGN had this guy from team xbox doing a live blog.
Something else jogged my memory when the owner was given the boot, and there was a whole thread about it here on Neogaf.

I remember spending so much time gaping at PGR screenshots back when I was still studying... thanks for the much-need distraction all those years, TeamXbox.

I was going there when it was MSxbox before the Xbox og was released and they were bought out by Teamxbox. Yeah Teamxbox bought out a smaller xbox site. This was the first site I ever posted in the comments sections and first gaming boards I ever joined RIP teamxbox.

Never understood why they didn't do a podcast.
