IGN: Don't expect a new F-Zero any time soon.

How badly did GX bomb again? Though wasn't the GBA versions the ones that basically killed the franchise?

I agree with the HD remake idea to test the waters.

Well, I'd rather not have F-Zero at all than a "good idea for what’s new that we could bring to F-Zero" and end up with F-Zero: Sticker Star.

We will get an HD Mario Kart compilation before fzero see the late if day again. I never thought I'd say this but I wish Miyamoto would retire already.

I have always enjoyed speculating about an F-Zero spin-off Beat 'em Up starring Captain Falcon. I guess that has become more likely than an actual F-Zero game now...

If you won't make a new one, c'mon - a Wii U rerelease in HD and a bit of a spruce up.

It would still destroy most games. Beautiful fast game.

But you'd agree that the Mario Kart success so to speak was also earned at one point and you can't expect a game to have brand power if you don't invest in the brand in the first place.

This. Nintendo refuses to do anything new because they only want to do what already has name power. But you don't get name power without doing something that doesn't have name power.

Look how many highly successful franchises have popped up that had no name power a few years ago. Assassin's Creed is a great example. I think Watch Dogs will be another.

Get even a couple dang balls, Nintendo.

"I think where I struggle is that I don’t really have a good idea for what’s new that we could bring to F-Zero that would really turn it into a great game again."

Is he taking shots at GX or the GBA versions here?

a game like F-Zero doesn't need "a new unique experience" in every new iteration. Just make it 60fps with tons of vehicles on screen, updated graphics, online multiplayer, track editor and you're good to go.

edit: basically what the poster above me wrote

This difference makes money.

Yeah, I think that was my underlying argument..

By continuing to ignore those franchises, they are essentially ignoring a large part of their old fan base.

Goddamn it, I was really hoping for an F-Zero game next gen. Way to be a downer, Miyamoto. The characters are on the good side of cheesy/goofy, the machines have funny names, and the game is all about LUDICROUS SPEED. They have a nice cast they could exploit for a new title, yet they won't.

Nintendo is sort of reminding me of Capcom with the way they treat their library of franchises.

This is what I have been struggling with regarding Nintendo recently. They seem to think that a single new gameplay gimmick is a reason to make a new game, but they don't see the benefits of iterating and polishing ideas that they already had.

Obviously, there are no new reasons to make an F-Zero game -- oh wait, there are. F-Zero GX had a pathetic four-player local multiplayer mode. There is so much room with the new hardware to do fucking five-player local and 32-player online. How is this not new for F-Zero?

Seriously, either I'd like some new blood to be given a little bit more responsibility at Nintendo so that they can challenge Miyamoto on these ideas or I'd like to one day sit down with that man and carefully describe the limitations of his way of thinking.

If Nintendo truly believes that adding 3 extra players to Mario 3D Land is a more compelling idea than blowing out all of the multiplayer and social features that a new F-Zero could have, I just don't know what to think about them anymore.

to answer his question "what's new we could bring?" uh how about just release GX and make it online compatible, game, set, match.

this is more important than region free

Can't make another F-Zero cause there's no room for innovation. Now New Super Mario Bros, there's a franchise that no one is bored of!

F-Zero GX, though awesome, did kind of bomb. Sold well over time, but I think the first week numbers were sub-100k.

Wasn't GX a huge flop?

I mean it looked like a huge project for the FZero series and it sold like shit, not too surprised they don't want to redo the experiment.

So how many more F-Zero games should they funnel money into before they acknowledge that it's not worth it?

Fundmentally, F-Zero isn't a commercial or mainstream friendly franchise. It's an arcade racer, and those don't really sell regardless of what new features you tack on to them. The only way that F-Zero will ever get close to Mario Kart in terms of commercial success is by totally rewriting the franchise and, essentially, not making it F-Zero any longer.

you don't have to be responsible for all of the ideas miyamoto. i'm sure some people in nintendo do have good ideas of where to take the franchise

if not ask sega or sumo digital

I hate to be an armchair developer, but like many of you said, it seems to be so easy and so close:

Every track in GX had it's own different gimmick. All it needs is new tracks.

Take GX, add AX, HD-ify it a little (so that the tracks can be seen in their full glory even in splitscreen)
+ Wii U bells & whistles (off TV, miiverse, 5 player, optional motion controls)
+ online
+ some new tracks
30 bucks

done!

Awesome postage.

They won't make a new F-Zero because they can't think of an idea? It's their JOBS to come up with ideas. For a company that thinks a cat suit justifies a new 3DLand/World game, they must be truly creatively bankrupt if they can't come up with a single thing to justify a new F-Zero game - a task which should honestly be very easy considering the framework of the game is already extremely solid.

Now if they just came out and said "We're not going to make F-Zero because it doesn't sell," I would totally understand.

They did invest in F-Zero. It wasn't successful.

If it wasn't successful I'd understand if they gave it a little hiatus. But after a while they shouldn't be scared to give it another go. Worked for Kid Icarus, Luigi's Mansion and Donkey Kong. They seem to be doing the same for Pikmin too.

A lot of publishers would die for a brand as loved as F-Zero. It's not a bad seller either outside of the regular Nintendo heavyweights and even then...

Get Shin'en to do it. F.A.S.T was pretty much F-Zero mixed with Ikaruga, and felt pretty damn 'fresh'. Either way, it's been a decade since the last F-Zero game, people aren't gonna be mad just because the game doesn't have any radical new ideas in it.

Maybe he means that they can't come up with any good ideas that would make F-Zero a greater commercial success?

List of things I've thought up right at this moment which could all be added to F-Zero.

Online, HD 60FPS 1080p, Track editor, Reverse tracks, Death match race, that random cup from F-Zero X, "battle mode" using only boosts and the spins to damage opponents, F-zero GX even had customizable cars so they could bring that back, some sort of "zone mode" like Wipe-out, or make it like the F-Zero chapter where you had to escape the building blowing up seeing how far you can make it with help of boosts and etc. Video recording and playback, uploading screenshots to miiverse, miiverse tournaments, classic mode where the camera kind of pulls back like the old games, maybe a classic cup? with old tracks just in HD as a throwback to the series' beginning? Characters from all of the games so you can have a huge amount of racers and maybe take a page from Mario Kart and bring back some tracks too.

There is SO MUCH you can do with the series man. Miyamoto just spouting some bullshit.

Miyamoto has said this kind of thing about F-Zero before, and it really makes no sense. What is he talking about? Just make another F-Zero game, like the last one or the one before that (GX and X)! It doesn't need to be some completely new thing, and it's badly needed.
