IGN: Fable Legends Forgets What Made Fable Great

Lionhead is just mixing it up. This isn't fable 4, it's a different take on the table universe. Fable 4 will eventually come folks but until it does this will be plenty fun.

I dunno... weren't they talking about this being the Fable game that will last the next 5-6 years or something like that? I guess if it bombs then maybe they make Fable 4.

It sounds like The Legend of Fable: The Four Swords.

I liked the art style and humor in the game, but everything else about it wasn't outstanding.

One with expansion was fantastic, a shame they progressively got worse with each sequel. I agree that this game looks worse as a Fable title. A shame MS had to bury this franchise to the ground after the first.

I dunno, as an RPG, I thought the story and characters were terrible to nonexistant, and as an Action game, the questing boring and linear and the combat too easy. I'll never be able to see how Fable is a great game.

I'm actually kind of optimistic about this one. Probably the color pallet and the 4 player instance dungeons in an ARPG setting. I've been wanting something to scratch my PSO itch since PSO (I even got hard into PSU somehow).

I mean, the reality is it will probably suck, but at least I can try it for free first?

That said, I have no allegience to Fable. never played one. don't have time for RPGs anymore.

Fable 2 was amazing, and had both a gorgeous world to explore filled with bandits and creatures and hidden treasures, it also had heart and soul in terms of personal interactions, and how you could play with them. There's also nothing else out there like it.

That's probably my favorite "happy place" game ever, where you could play as a an actual hero (and not just a different flavor of anti-hero), and yeah, where Fable 3 dropped the ball on almost everything I loved about the series, Fable Legends doesn't even have a spark of it.

It could still be a fun time on its own, but I wouldn't look to it for what drew me into the series.

Agree on none of the series being 'great'.

1 was above average and suffered from being a major disappointment to what we were all expecting.

2 was very good imo. One of the better games I remember from last gen. Played through it all, got all the hidden gargoyles, just a brilliant game, world and feel to it all.

3 was above average and surprisingly not up to the quality of 2. Felt cheap and tacky.

Legends looks terrible. Seriously I thought the proper gameplay shown looked like a typical f2p type effort and the top down controlling the enemy stuff was just a mess of an idea and looked like a mobile game.

Biggest disappointment (from what was shown) of the show for me.

The PSO itch really does need a scratching.

Yeah, not feeling it yet.

I played the other Fable games to explore the world, tolerating the middling combat and presentation. I'll be happy to try Legends out, but what I really want from Fable is a big world to explore how I like and some better story-driven campaigns that I could play SP or MP.

There was an interview with Lionhead a few months back where they said they are making Legends so they could build all types of games off of it. Hopefully they are working on some other types now and not just banking on this MP stuff for the first season.

I'm fine with the seasonal approach.

Guys guys guys...this will always be the best Fable:

The series has always been incredibly easy compared to the average game. For that, I think having a dungeon master "villain" will make for some interesting gaming that hasn't really been done on consoles.

I'm excited about the shift towards having players be the enemy force, through gameplay that differs from what the "good guys" are playing. Between this, Zombi U's versus mode, and Mario Party 10's gamepad controlled Bowser, I welcome our player driven overlord.

I had no hype or expectations for the first fable so I remember enjoying Fable 1 and Fable 2. I haven't played Fable 3 but alot of comments about that game seem to make me want to avoid that title. I understand though what the OP is saying. Legends looks like a genre shift and I would also lose interest in the series if it did. But I wouldn't call myself a diehard fan, just someone who thought the first 2 fables were enjoyable.

The game is very evolve esque in my eyes. You can be the villain( evolve monster) or the players. It's a double edged sword branding it as fable. You get the brand recognition but you also get people wanting the normal fable.

As long as the game is like 15 bucks per season or FTP with transactions, I'll give it a go.

When i was watching the microsoft conference with fable legends on screen it didn't remind me of Fable at all. They should have called it different i somewhat liked fable 1 and 2 was better and never bothered to play 3.

I reject the notion that Fable was ever great. 1 is the greatest letdown in gaming history, 2 was decent, and 3 was a mess.

Yeah I'm actually more interested in Legends than I ever was for any other Fable game.

At the very least I think it looks freaking amazing. A lot of times during the demo it felt like I was watching Shrek run in real time. And I mean a very distant and fond memory of Shrek, because it probably hasn't aged that well and I haven't watched it in a while :P

::shrug::

I loved Fable 2 and about 80% of Fable 3.

At any rate, I have to agree with the thrust of this article and it really makes me wonder who in the hell would want to play a Fable game solely for its multi-player. (Though I admit ignorance of this game, is there any single player component?)

Fable 1-3 were decent, simple ARPGs. I haven't been remotely interested in the series since then. Doesn't look like that will change.

While i loved Fable 1 and 2 the franchise went downhill fast after Fable 2.
Dont really like the new direction they take with this one. :(

Hmmm so this fable is going to be essentially a Dungeon Crawler with Coop?

I'm going to call it now, we are going to have a Forza situation with Fable, Ms is going to keep on releasing Fable Legends Seasons while also developing Fable 4.

The first game was decent, but launched near the time of Morrowind and KOTOR for Xbox, and it could not match up with either one. The next one I played was 3 and it was trash. Can't say Legends made any kind of mark for me during the presser.

Fable 1 & 2 are fun, pretty shallow combat, but they have a lot of charm. Never played 3 but heard bad things.

Legends just doesn't look interesting to me at all, and I hope Lionhead have something else in the works.

Pretty much this. Though I did enjoy Fable 1 at the time, I think it was hurt more by unrealistic expectations rather than any real flaw in the game itself.

Fable: The Lost Chapters can be had for cheap on PC and is an enjoyable play.

Fable 2 is decent enough.

Forget everything else exists.

The series was never 'great', the second one is kind of good, that's about it. They should have thrown it all out and tried something new like this.

Yup. All 3 games were hindered by reaching behind their grasp and not paying attention to what few things actually made Fable interesting to play. Fable was always a B tier RPG, turning it into a multiplayer dungeon crawler isn't going to change that.

I want to be excited for Fable Legends but I'm not feeling it. Multiplayer is all well and good but I want to go on a story driven adventure with my fully customisable hero. I want to be able to change my play style from mele to magic whenever I want and I want a big world to explore. All of this with the usual British humour.

The Xbox One was a perfect opportunity for Lionhead to finally realise the original Fable dream. Why haven't they done it? My wife, perhaps a bigger Fable fan than me, also agrees.

I like the Fable Legends direction. After Fable 2, I couldn't care less for franchise. But this actually looks fun. I love the new direction. I just wonder how deep combat/villain systems are.

Nothing ever made Fable great. Fable 2 failed in even providing decent movement. I can't even fathom how someone can fail in something as basic for a game where exploration is a key aspect.

This this this. Dammit Phil!

"This spin off of a game isn't like the main series and it bums me out even though I enjoyed it."

I'll never understand this line of criticism. Enjoy it (or don't) for what it is. If this was the proper sequel to the main line of Fable, they would probably have called it Fable 4.

Those were my exact thoughts, an opportunity to make the Fable game we've always been promised. Who asked for this?

The only Fable I truly enjoyed (loved even) was the second title. So really, the franchise as a whole isn't so hot, and this latest Legends game was another disappointment for me. I'd rather see a proper Fable 4.
