IGN Game Scoop! - "What Could Save Nintendo's E3?"

Something that would blow people away and replace Zelda as the holiday release? Metroid. Metroid still has some selling power that's not entirely based on nostalgia, like Star Fox. There are new fans out there thanks to the Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii U, as well as the games on the Virtual Console.

Personally, I'd like to see Animal Crossing and Professor Layton. The latter wouldn't be a big seller, but it would make for an unforgettable E3 for me. Animal Crossing would definitely move systems, especially if it adopts the Mayor concept and expands on some of the ideas, perhaps taking something from the Happy Home Designer as well.

I think its a bit early to talk about it needing to be saved, since we have no idea whats coming, but stuff like F-Zero and Metroid would win E3 without sweat, so hopefully that.

It doesn't need to be replaced. The content we have in 2015 should be more than enough to be without Zelda. The devs are saying 300+ hours of Xenoblade Chronicles X not including DLC, Starfox, The Devil's Third, Yoshi Whooly World, Splatoon, Smash bros and MK8 DLC. All that and still more stuff to come from E3 I don't see what the big fuss is about and I love Zelda but there is more than enough content for 2015. Yet I don't see people raging over Quantum Break and Uncharted 4 being delayed til 2016..... just seems like there is a big double standard in that regard. Not a fan of uncharted personally but I was interested in Quantum Break the thing that sucks about that is there is no 1st party titles on Xbone for me that have dates yet for 2015 which worries me but I can't fully comment on that until E3.

PS4/XB1 has 3rd party games with so much diversity to play for everyone even if there is less first party stuff, but on Wii U only first party Nintendo games exist so they need more content with more diversity as everyone has different tastes for games.

"Save" as in financially? Nothing at all.

For me personally? The Wii U is already justified, but I'd really love a 2D Metroid on Wii U. There's no reason Metroid 5 bas to be on the 3DS, just like DKCR and TF weren't either.

For me I'd like another event like last year's, and for them to announce what the Mother 3 teases have been about, I'd imagine the best case/most likely is a western localization on virtual console, worst case is nothing and the teases were just to dick around Mother fans. My pipe dream is a remake to the original EB64 plan but updated graphics and such.

Well today is your lucky day! The latest mainline Professor Layton game was announced today (Layton 7)! It's coming to mobile and instead of it being a traditional layton game it's a free to play (more than likely pay to win) card game! Since it's a numbered entry, we most likely won't see another traditional entry on gaming handhelds for a long time, if ever. :)

I wish I was joking. Fuck Level 5... :(

For me it would be a new 3D Metroid announcement or whatever Retro is working on paired with an HD remaster, preferably Kid Icarus Uprising or Mario Sunshine.

Announce a new IP that takes place in a fascinating, atmospheric world with player-choice-driven moral quandaries featuring rock-solid gameplay mechanics.

In other words, a Western RPG in the vain of Deus Ex, Jade Empire, Alpha Protocol, etc....but with a Shigeru Miyamoto bent. THAT would win E3.

I doubt he's capable of making such a game. Really not in his wheelhouse.

I'm not sure what to expect this year. Last year was awesome. But I'm concerned this year we will see much stuff we already know and will be shown again cause of delays. (Mario Maker and Yoshi). Then Fatal Frame. I'm glad it gets localized but I don't need any more footage. Also Xenoblade X. One of my most wanted but I've seen already enough.

Anyone else have the same feeling?

They just gonna take the imaginary loss this year and do a Zelda Direct Part 1 of 4, in late july early august. Then everybody look crazy for spouting doom for a month and a half lol

"what can fill Zelda's shoes in its absence at E3 that can blow people away?"

I assumed this was the context of the question.

Well the only thing that can match a home console 3D Zelda made by the main EAD Kyoto team is a home console 3D Metroid from Retro Studios or a home console 3D Mario from EAD Tokyo, we're talking 360 degree type worlds not the isometric-ish stuff like you see in Other M / 3D World. So basically Prime 4 and Galaxy 3.

So every E3 without Zelda was boring or shit?

They will show some new Games and everything will be fine

I think that's the big point, what games are they going to show? Most likely not a new 3D Mario, because even though it's in the works, I thought I've read it wasn't for the Wii U (?). Zelda was going to be their biggest holiday title for this year, and seeing now it's delayed to 2016 Nintendo doesn't have a blockbuster this fall. Sure, Xenoblade X will get great scores, but it's not the game that will "save the Wii U". Neither will Star Fox U to be honest. I'm very excited and at the same time somewhat frightened to see what Nintendo's going to do next.

Man if they really wanted to turn heads they should show a new Metroid or F-Zero.

Realistically? We're getting Stairfax U, Devil's Third, more Smash 4 DLC #FreeWolf and uhhh probably Animal Crossing U Edition.

Also Nintendo killed it last year while everyone else showed trailers and concept art.

I foresee two projects from Retro. A 2D Metroid for 3DS and a new Eternal Darkness for Wii U.

Both released in November.

It bugs me how dismissive they and people in general are of 3D World. They say they want to see the next step for 3D Mario after Galaxy. We got it. It was 3D World. It was Galaxy with the cut fat from it and a lot more content. After 16 years they finally got a 3D Mario to play like a Mario game. It was glorious.

What I would love to see would be a 3D World sequel or DLC that was single-player-only so that they could focus the level design on presenting even greater challenges.

Just do what they did last year at E3 and they will be fine, IGN is just reaching as usual with its click bait headline.

Fix it for ya.

Hopefully not made by Retro.

OT: as long as they do Treehouse they autowin. Another Smash Tourney, Starfox presentation, Stealth Fzero or Metroid drops, etc would be the icing on the cake...

Announcing FFTA3DS would make me cry buckets! Pls

I'm a crazy Nintendo fan and I don't get why Zelda is treated like Nintendo's best serie or Ace card at all, since Majora's Mask I have not been amazed by the series and franky I'm more excited for them announcing almost anything else.

Nintendo destroyed E3 ladt year and there was no Zelda, they can do it again.

Hell, give me a Rhythm Heaven for Wii U instead of fucking Zelda.

Crazy Nintendo fan =/= crazy Zelda fan.

I'm sure there are tons of The Last of Us fans who didn't like God of War, or vice versa. Zelda was going to be Nintendo's biggest game this fall, that's a fact. And with that out of the equation, they don't have any blockbusters for this fall (yet).

I have played every single Zelda game, I love the series, I just don't get the NO ZELDA OH NO DOOMED talk, I'm personally way more excited about Xenoblade as my big Nintendo game of the year.

But I get what you mean, maybe they'll show a new Pokemon game?

you're making it sound like only having Zelda would have been enough for Nintendo - it would still have been a poor E3. Without it, who the hell knows what they'll do. We didn't predict they'd actually do a nice prerecorded keynote and follow it up with the pretty great Treehouse.

Any sort of Metroid would be enough for me, frankly. I don't know what else could fill the big gap of a proper console Zelda introduction.

I think that realistically, looking at their incoming schedule, we could expect a "wide range target" game for the holidays, something that could be

Animal Crossing U (but the announcement of the 3DS new amiibo card game somehow decrese its chance of being there)
Skylander-like amiibo-centric game (could be the Next Level game?)
Mario Universe aka Galaxy3

In terms of pure "feeling", I think that only a 2016 announcement could replace Zelda during the conference. Too bad they already told us that Zelda will not even showcased because it was delayed, and that the conference will focus on 2015 games. Hopefully, they will surpirse us instead. So, if they will announce something big for next year, it could be

Metroid U

Nothing can replace Zelda.

Mario maker is their best shot.

Having played it, if that's their best shot, they're utterly screwed.

Nothing they've announced so far can step into Zelda's shoes, they would need to have something up their sleeve, likely from an existing IP. Mario Kart Wii U 2, would be about the only thing I could imagine, but it's unlikely because of how they're supporting the original with DLC.
