IGN: id Software President Todd Hollenshead Leaves Company

Hopefully Bethesda keeps them focused.

I keep seeing the above strewn about.

Bethesda does not own them. Zenimax Media owns them. Zenimax is the publisher, who owns both id software and Bethesda.

Bethesda is a developer (not publisher), alongside id software.

I don't know why Bethesda is always thought to be in charge, they're a developer.

I get what you're saying, but I merely used your post as an example of what I keep seeing.
 
For me DOOM was all about scavenging for resources and solving mazes. The carnage and explosive mayhem were the side-dish :p

You're idea of doom is wonderful. Most people really forget that doom was aobut the maps and being resource smart.

Maybe that is why doom 64 is perhaps my favorite doom :D
 
In multi-player front it was completely different of course, didn't people hate Quake 2 compared to Quake 1?

Yeah, it was definitely a mixed bag. Personally I ADORED Quake II's multiplayer, but it was also my first experience with custom game mods, player models / skins / sound packs, and custom maps. So as you would expect it holds a huge place in my heart. When Quake 3 launched I wasn't really into it. I still played it a bit but there were a number of things that I just enjoyed more in Quake II more so, like the maps and functions of weapons / items. It was all a matter of opinion. However, I feel that everyone can agree on the fact that Quake IV was pretty damn upsetting.
 
The way I see it, id just lost out when development when development focused to consoles. On the PC, they could write a new engine and release it anytime and subsequent PC games would license it.

I think getting out of engine licensing was a conscious choice on their part, they didn't want to grow the company to include all the support needed for a business like that.
 
Sad to see Mr. Hollenshead go. He always seemed to have a great time with the fans at QuakeCon. Hopefully this doesn't mark the beginning of an exodus of long time talent at id.

idtech 5 is no home run, seems to be the opposite of the way many engines work these days (tons of static pre-baking vs quick iterating WYSIWYG). I was kinda surprised to see two other games using id5. Doom and Quake had such amazing addictive play and Q3 was a multiplayer masterpiece, but everything Doom 3 and on has played generic and boring.

I enjoyed RAGE for what it was, but that it took what felt like 10 years to make that level of game is mind boggling. Sounds like the reset button on id has already been hit twice, three strikes they are out? No Doom4 at E3. If it doesn't get shown at quakecon I'm pretty much ready to write id off.

Thus the high amounts of "old-school" first-person shooters that are about progressing through large killrooms(hi Hard Reset).

They seem to forget the true part of Old school like Doom and DN3D was level design and speed running on the highest diffiuclty imo was the best way to appreciate it
 
Whether it was marketing or not, I felt like they completely deceived the general gaming world with Rage. There was the game they promised; a vast, epic, not necessarily open world shooter with lots of content, and there was the game they delivered. They pushed the "marketing", or whatever, right up to launch, then went quiet.

You guys remember the previews they had? I assumed that this was just a portion of the game -- which is normal. But it turned out that they "previewed" pretty much every. single. mission in the game (Except the race missions I think.). And then there was the map at their site, which also alluded to a completely different game.

Basically, I expected a 20+ hour epic, but got a 5-10 hour "regular" FPS game. I think Rage had one of the most deceptive marketing campaigns this generation, by far.
 

The end killed most of the goodwill I had for the game, I was not amused at having to fight metal monkeys. over and over and over again. If Mr. Hollenshead had anything to do with the metal monkey ending dungeon, good riddance, I hope he lands somewhere else where his metal monkey fetish can't hurt us.

Bethesda Softworks is id's publisher. Bethesda Game Studios is the in house development team of Bethesda Softworks.

All are subsidiaries of Zenimax, though.

ugh this grinds my gears each time a new "old school" shooter comes out. Painkiller, Serious Sam, and Hard Reset go as far as locking the doors on the player in each room. A shame because PK has great movement.

Not an old school FPS but the dustforce guys are making a first person randomly generated item based tower climber or something and linked a Quake 3 CPM video as inspiration for movement.
 
HL2 was awful compared to Doom 3. I seriously cannot believe people are hating on it. It was probably the best shooter of 2004, perhaps only surpassed by Far Cry.

I think randomly generated maps and good level design are mutually exclusive.
