IGN: Justice League is lighter and more fun than BvS

shame they didn't ditch Snyder in the process. he can make a great action scene but the rest of his toolset is a mess.

glad they are trying to bring some levity to the film - BvS was so 'dark and moody' that it just ended up dull and dour.

love that logo and the tone that it invokes.

Completely disagree. BvS is bad because the writing and directing is bad. It's an unfocused and cluttered mess.

The problem is almost completely with the Superman side of things...instead of getting Clark Kent and Superman right they have a dry as fuck Lois Lane and Supes and try to invest all their comedic energy into a miscast Lex Luthor

The supes side of things have to be changed immediately--everything I saw from the batman side of things was fine

That description of Flash is 100% Wally, not Barry.

Probably for the better. Would not be mad if Hal was actually Kyle.

The method for making Barry interesting has always been to turn him into Wally. Except in Young Justice.

It does but after JL, I'm pretty sure we won't get Supes for a while.

This. This this this. They need to recast Luthor.

And I thought Batman was okay, but Affleck needs to work on his Bruce Wayne. Too morose. (Of course, that fits in with Snyder's complete lack of understanding on Supes.)

yeah, hopefully JL features almost no Clark/Superman/Lex/Lois.

BvS' problems went beyond its tone which was admittedly overbearingly and suffocatingly morose at times. I expected it from Batman, but for the tone to bleed over into every other aspect of the film was too much. There was little contrast between the titular characters.

That said, honestly I am not expecting much from this movie as we've done this song and dance routine before. Snyder is still at the helm and WB spent the last 3 years placating everyone by saying that they were going to improve on MoS' shortcomings and well -- we saw how that worked out. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised but I'm not holding my breath either.

I'm a little surprised these are coming out so soon. Set reports are usually embargoed for like up to a year.

Oh this is pure damage control.

I mean WELL over a year before the movie's release.

And a week before initial (digital) release of the Ultimate Edition.

It's them getting people to give them a second chance.

I had read Geoff Johns' run of Wally West and while I loved the most of the villains (epsecially Zoom), Wally isn't stuck in my mind as a character. This run had great and mature stories, but I really like the good guy Flash, aka Barry Allen. Also, I don't remember Wally been funny (maybe another writer wrote him as such), but I remember Barry Allen of new 52 as a lighthearted character.

You should be reading Waid's run, and to a lesser extent Messner-Loebs'.

Even in Rebirth, Johns' was channeling Waid more than himself, some of that dialogue was straight out of that run.

I'd say in Flash Rebirth and Titans Rebirth, Wally was certainly more fun than Barry.

I wouldn't go that far. But damn if warehouse fight wasn't peak Batman.

I agree.

What makes me think BvS is a good movie is due to the 'grim and dark' style of it isntead of billion of colors and happy times all time like the Marvel movies (don't get me wrong, I like the Marvel Movies).

It had its problem, just like any other superhero movie.

Johns' Flash run was just Barry-lite. Waid is/was the defining Flash writer and created a unique character with his Wally -- which has since ended up influencing how Barry is written in stuff like the Flash show.

If I want light and fun movie, I'll go watch marvel. What the fuck are they doing?

Yes. Lets turn every movie into Marvel fluff. This is so classic hollywood. Chasing money, chasing success at the expense of storytelling.

BvS was a very flawed film, but its problem was not its tone. TDK was much darker... i was exhausted after the movie... but it is just a better movie. The pacing is perfect. the editing keeps the movie focused on the three main characters. the character development for Harvey and Bruce Wayne, the character motivations for Rachel, Lucius, Alfred and even Gordon were beautifully realized.

Zach's BvS is all over the place. The editing is very jarring which makes the first half of the movie feel like a slog. His superman mopes around the entire movie barely even talking. His Batman was great, but kills indiscriminately which makes no sense considering all the Batman villain in Suicide Squad are obviously alive. The finale was visually amazing, but lacked any kind of emotional weight TDK's ending had.

They need a good script with proper character motivations, not a funny script that takes away all the tension at the end of the movie like Marvel movies. They need a good director. Zach snyder makes beautiful looking movies with some awesome action scenes but he is not a good director. He's basically a talented Michael Bay.

i am one of the few people who liked BvS despite its flaws hoping that they would be fixed in the sequel, but this is not what i was hoping for.

Agreed pretty much. BvS's tone and it not being "Marvel" was not the problem with the movie.
Granted we haven't seen any real footage or anything but I can't say I'm not disappointed slightly with what I've read.

The movie says him killing is fairly new

You'll probably like the ultimate edition.

Both Devin's piece and his interview with Affleck specifically says they're still shooting for a more mythic tone than other comicbook films. They're just not interested in making something as outright angry and depressing as BvS.

I had no problem with dark and moody. It doesn't hurt to add more lightness though just to give the viewers some time to breath.

This is all sounding good right now and I really hope we get a competent Barry instead of CW Barry. Comparisons are inevitable and all but I hope they will be able to make Flash different enough where people won't go, "dude is the Quicksilver but for DC!"

Exactly, and that's what separates a film like The Dark Knight and Batman V Superman. The Dark Knight, at points, is even darker than BvS. However, The Dark Knight's pacing ebbs and flows, there are moments of humor and lightness, and a propulsive pacing that makes the movie really fun without detracting from it's dramatic stakes.

Batman V Superman has the darkness cranked to 10 for the entirety of it's runtime. It just becomes overbearing, and causes the audience to check out.

Justice League was always going to be lighter than BvS. That's what the material calls for. Those involved were saying this from before BvS released.

Post-BvS adjustments will be made, but they're not changing identities or chasing that shitty Marvel tone.

Damage control. I am sure this isn't the last we have seen of this kind of behavior. That being said I do not see Snyder directing anything WB related after his contract runs out either.

Yeah, I had no problems with it but I can see why and how people had major issues with it on top of the pacing issues (I enjoyed BvS but the pacing just took me out of the movie way too much). If, and it's a big IF, they somehow fix the pacing, transitions, editing then Justice League might receive better critical reception compared to BvS. We won't knos until next year so there is still hope!

A change in tone will be nice, but if they don't fix the shit writing and editing it doesn't matter and it will be just as bad.

It was a bit of an issue. The best point RLM made in their review was when they did the montage of Superman saving people, it was edited as if it was the saddest thing in the world.
Yeah I felt bad for Superman, he clearly hates being Superman and would be far happier only living as Clark Kent.
