IGN Mass Effect Preview of latest build

I enjoyed Jade Empire. Fuck you all. ;)

Bioware still loves us if the previews are close to reality. Mass Effect, please don't hate me for Bioshock. We're just good friends.

Me too, in fact I enjoyed it so much I could have kept playing for another 30 hours. Damn that game was short. Fair enough I probably didn't do everything, but it was still way too freaking short. Let's hope Mass Effect doesn't have the same problem. I'm not really too worried about it, but including robust combat into an RPG tends to shorten the experience and ME's combat sounds spectacular, but where are the lightsabers? Seriously though, is there any word on the size of the galaxy? I have so many questions about this game, questions that I really don't want answered.

I have to admit though, in the interests of full disclosure, that I harbour a secret desire for Mass Effect to fail miserably and only sell 10,000 copies thereby forcing Bioware to make another Star Wars themed RPG, this one set just before Ep. IV wih Vader as the main villain. Never going to happen.

Still, Mass Effect should be solace enough. Last I heard though, Obsidian are developing Kotor 3, please tell me this was just an ugly rumour. Actually I think the same article said it was going to be PS3 exclusive. Thank god, must be bullshit.

Yeah, honestly my only complaint when i finished jade empire was that its too short. Well there are a couple of videos of the galaxy map for mass effect, its split up into sectors then star systems and then planets or what not. According to devs theres 300 or hundreds (dont remember the number clearly) of objects/places (meaning planets, moons, derelict space stations or ships) that we can visit on the map but they are all of varying length

As for the scope of the galaxy, there's hundreds of planets but only 15% or so are able to be explored – everything else is only scannable.

And here's a video of the galaxy map to get a sense of its scale.

Or i could be full of shit, there was a lot of talk about it on mass effect forums, but that was 4 months ago or so.

I think it’s going to be about 40 hours or so for the main story, so it’s going to be a good-sized BioWare RPG just for the core part. Off the beaten path, there’s probably another 20 or 30 hours or so of stuff, or more, depending on how much you do and what order you do it in and all of that. It’s this non-linear exploration of uncharted worlds. [Editor's Note: We recently received an email from Microsoft clarifying the length of the game. "There are so many interesting choices, no player will likely see everything in the game in one pass through the core game. One play through, just one permutation of the critical path, would be about 20-30 hours and the extra stuff you could do, including exploration of uncharted worlds and post-release content, would add another 20 or more hours depending on what you do and in what order."]
