IGN: Mortal Kombat X will (probably) have microtransactions

Name your favorite microtransaction and how it helped / improved the game for you, the consumer?

Or, we stop them from ruining a franchise (worse than Midway did) that we love

first of all, wtf does the first question have to do with anything?

secondly, accusing them of ruining a franchise shows you clearly don't know about the studio or the games and are just ambulance chasing hashtags.

third, why do you keep using "we"?

This went from being my first potential day one, full price PS4 purchase to a "let's find out what this is first".

If it is anything other than cosmetic stuff, I'll be pretty damn disappointed. Microtransactions should not be included in pay for games.

Way to cancel out a potential sale.

To answer your second question this isn't ruining the franchise.

There's been plenty where the mere existence of microtransactions has done zero to effect my enjoyment of a game. Maybe they will in this case maybe they won't I'm just saying wait and see before starting a Twitter campaign based off of a single quote (or word really) from an ign article. In sure we will get more and more info before the game releases.

Then you must love grinding, because otherwise microtransactions are your time being held for money. And I don't think a "wait and see" is a good approach. I think making your voice heard prior to launch / full implementation is the best idea.

Because Microtransactions just put your time behind a paywall for the most part, you can pay to fast track your progress or you can grind your time away.

IDK about the franchise? Midway rushed out MK after MK because it was their cash cow and they were going down the drain. Remember Mortal Kombat: Armageddon? Most people don't. It was the game where they had Motaro w/ two legs, because Midway didn't give them time to make it properly. Ed Boon himself have mentioned this. I'm not saying the studio is at fault, when the money / wigs they answer to tell them what to do.

Because I have multiple personality disorder (JK)

Yes, because all those grindy time wall microtransactions really made those games better...

What would grinding entail in this game? I figured stuff got unlocked as we go through the story. Theyll make us arbitrarily beat arcade mode over and over to accumulate points or what?

Havent played MK since the second one, so im not familiar with how the series handles these things.

Most things in the game including online matches, arcade, and story mode earn koins/XP (depending on the game) which purchases alternate costumes and concept art in the krypt/archive.

Yeah, unless the progression is super, duper-slow to make it necessary.

If it's an unlock everything type, the competitive community will love it- because it means not wasting time on the single player content which they despise.

The competitive community is happiest when they can play a game with just practice, customization, and PVP modes. They don't want to mess around with story modes.

Make the game free.

I think a fighting game driven by LoL-style microtransactions is a great idea, since a big reason why Valve and Riot have an incentive to pour money into the competitive scenes of their games is because they have a continued financial interest in keeping the existing audience enthused, playing and paying for baubles. I think it's crazy for any serious competitive game to launch in this day and age without a continuous revenue model.

But they need to be free. Saddling a full price retail game with a FTP business model is the ultimate sheist shit.

This has already happened- Xuan Dao Zhi Whang over in China- it's a kinda KOF clone that actually has Terry and Benimaru in it.

:(

I Secretly now want this to fail so other companies don't follow suit.

I feel the same way.

Minus the whole "secretly" aspect.

Microtransactions in console games are a bad precedent.

Even more so in a competitive game.

Albeit this is Mortal Kombat, but still.

Grinding would involve playing matches of MK over and over again. I'm not sure anybody wants to do that, so it is pretty ideal to add micro transactions. This way people can avoid playing it as much as possible and just get on with playing something else.

Or so the plan would seem?

The other model is to get players to pay per animation frame. That would start out really cheap, but could get expensive over time with the size of the cast.

The big questions is, what are the micro transactions for?

If it's for characters, or just different costumes, etc. Either way, I ain't fan of them at all.

But what about the STORY, todd?

/hardcore sarcasm

Welcome to the modern game industry. I hope no one is surprised a major game could have microtransactions. It's the future and gamers apparently love it and keep supporting it. Expect things to get a lot worst from here.

Remember back when $50 got you not only a finished, complete product, but one with enough effort put into it the hopes of turning a profit off of said unit?

To be serious for once, those were good times but pretty much all those companies are now dead.

I don't like it either, but there are enough micro transactions and dlc models around today that it can work for both parties. Pay to not play is incredibly stupid as a concept, but if it works it is pretty harmless.

And the story mode will be a good laugh I'm sure. Not so much for what it is, but later seeing people take it seriously ;)

Seriously some of the fun in a game like this is actually unlocking things

I'll pay you to be able to play the game and i'll pay you again so I won't have to!

...

"making your voice heard" before even knowing what you are upset about is a good way to get your "voice" to not be taken seriously.

Would you like to change faction?
I'd be okay with this.

If there's not a steep enough penalty, what's to stop everyone from jumping ship to the currently winning side in an attempt to get bonuses off of others wins?

Choose your side wisely from the start and pull your weight for the team, otherwise pay up.

As long as they don't give you an advantage over other players or impossible to get past/own without buying then I have no problem with microtransactions. Up to the gamer to decide if he wants the easy way to get something. Personally I think you appreciate it more if you earn it.

I wish I could say I was surprised, but I'm not. I'll continue to reward these shitty practices by buying the GOTY edition for $5 on Steam in two years.
This..
As of late i'm straying from other fighting game using the same policy of dlc, complete edition..
Infact i skipped completely bb:cp (i'll buy bb cp extend, since it's supposedly the last One), i bought just the first and the last edition of sfiv, and i bought the original km and then got the io plate dirti cheap for 5 dollah after selling mk9 on ps3..
Developers have to learn it the hard way nowdays.. Mil king a bit every Now and then? Might be pissing, but ok...
Consistently milking the usebase? No thanks..

There's no way it's not just koins and a faction change. Nothing else really works, and it seems some people describe DLC and micro-transactions as the same thing. To me, micro-transactions are more uh....micro. :p Something small, that may be bought many times.
My hype for MKX isn't deflated much at all.

I'll reserve complete judgement until more details release of course, since that's the sensible thing to do in my opinion.

Goro as a preorder bonus still leaves a bad taste in my mouth though.

Time to start the hashtag campaign.

What do we want to go with?

The game is coming out in two months, anyone that knows that knows whats set in motion will stay in motion. And the idea of organizing the internet to stop this seems highly, highly improbable if you follow this industry at all.

Your post comes of as self serving and an attempt to make yourself seem important in this industry.

I just wont buy the MT's. The game will still be awesome.

Yea, MT are here to stay. They slowly started creeping their way from the mobile into "AAA" game market. Companies are surely earning good money from them , or idk why they bother

Anyways , it certainly won't make a bad player better in this particular game , so there shouldn't be reason to get mad about it. IF you could buy a flawless victory with MTs , then that would be some shit , lol

Oh, fuck the games industry, seriously.

I'm so tired of this shit.

As far as I'm concerned MKX hasn't released until I can find it in a bargain bin. Then if the micro-transactions feel like they are impeding on my experience, like the inevitably always do, I can buy into them knowing that it's still less than the $60/ÂŁ40 they would have gotten.

Step 1: Don't buy game.

There is no step 2. If everybody properly follows step 1, then the buck stops here and we can all rejoice and play video games happily ever after.

Since MK gameplay is not the best around - and I already have Guilty Gear Xrd to have some fights, I'll gladly pass.

I relive those days all the time, now that I've turned my back on modern consoles. Being able to unlock characters, costumes, levels, and more content through normal play instead of via an Internet-enabled revenue stream is pretty cool.

Microtransactions are the rule and not the exception in today's video game industry. Consumers said they were okay by voting with their wallets. It's unfortunate to see, but this future was set in motion almost a decade ago, and the future refused to change.

From all the post ive seen, looked like you always wanted this to fail :)

If its in, this could be a bad thing or good thing.

If they kept updating the Krypt with Alt, Themes, Playercards and FatalitysBrutalitys, hell even DLC as an alternative choice rather than straight out buying them this could work imo, just once the staple stuff is easy to earn like pass MKs

If progress is roughly the same as MK9 in that you can get a lot of coins to unlock stuff just by regularly playing the game then I don't have a problem. If they're impeding or slowing process down to the point where it's a tremendous grind unless you just pay to unlock the stuff then I have a problem.

I assume this is gonna be for factions in that once you pick a faction you stick with them and if you wanna change you gotta pay.

Not sure why a lot of you are mad about this. Games have stayed at 60$ the past 10+ years and the cost of production has gone way up. If they didn't do stuff like micro transactions, dlc, collectors editions the games wouldn't be content rich or look as good. It's not like NetherRealm doesn't provide enough content out of the box.

The entire process if making a game is to get money and be able to pump some of it back into the next project. I don't mind giving good devs a little extra money if the content is good. If it's not there then I wait for a sale or game of the year edition.

Fucking Horse DLC armor. :(

Y'all act like MK9 or Injustice weren't complete games out the gate.

Actually this mentality that DLC always = Game not complete is really weird. The game can have as much content as it wants but as soon as some DLC is announced its not a complete game.

What happens if there isn't one?

I see this recommendation often but we don't get the GOTY versions for all games.

If a GOTY/Complete (Komplete?) Edition of Mortal Kombat X doesn't come, the vanilla game would likely have dropped to $20 or less after a year's time-- so jilted consumers could go that route & pay the extra for DLC to make it a "complete" $60 game.

I don't see a scenario where WBIE doesn't repackage Mortal Kombat X for re-release with at least some additional content by Q1 2016, though.
