IGN names Journey 2012 Game of the Year

I'm still disappointed by the way that some people are reacting to those that enjoy Journey. Isn't it enough to say that you don't like it because you think it's too short or too simple or whatever? Why take it further and argue that it's "not a video game" or that people who like it are just trying to "be cool?" Isn't it possible that some people just value different things in their interactive entertainment?

Journey is to Call of Duty as The Master is to Skyfall. They’re both wonderfully crafted experiences in their own right, but there are those who will experience Journey and not “get it.” They will declare their time a waste and that’s fine. There are others who will play Journey and look back fondly on their time in that world, and remember the emotions it created for them.

You gotta be fucking kidding me right? It's not even a game. I enjoyed playing/running through it, but it's not even fair to the other proper games that developers put some real efforts and money into developing them

IGN trying to be cool? It doesn't make sense to me. But again, I've not been that active as a gamer for the past few years so the taste of gamers might have changed

Please give your goty so we can rip it to shreds.

I have Journey.

I liked a lot, great gameplay, art design and graphics, but best game of the year is exageration. Although all these positive technical points, it's a quite simple game.

I think the whole thing is fascinating. Between Journey & The Walking Dead, we've seen that for many players, the illusion of freedom is as good or better than the real thing.

WTF? Are you seriously suggesting that other games give the player real freedom?

So what? How complicated it is has absolutely NOTHING to do with how good it is as a game. All that matters is the experience you had playing it.

The amount of effort, manpower, money, complexity, and dare I say even passion aren't really requirements for choosing a better game, or any form of entertainment.

Agree. I'm finding myself enjoying Hotline Miami ten times more than FC3, I would under no circumstance discredit the fun I had with the smaller title just by the virtue of it having a smaller budget and less 'A's. Screw overly bloated and somehow paradoxically shallow blockbuster games.

Journey's lack of complexity is one of the main reasons why the game didn't make my personal top 10 for this year. That doesn't mean I think the game would be better if it was more complex, as I honestly don't, but the relative simplicity of it did play a factor into how much I enjoyed it compared to other games. Most of the games I find most enjoyable tend to be fairly complex, although there are some exceptions (Super Hexagon).

Complication implies that something was done inefficiently though, so I'm assuming you meant complexity.

Wh-Whaaaat? IGN picked a good game for GOTY this year? I'm genuinely stunned.

ME3 even being in the RPG category makes me LOL though... But still, IGN has done better than expected with Journey. Now GAF has no excuse to not make it GOTY.

I agree with you and share your opinions too.

I enjoyed Journey, got the message it delivered and honestly didn't give a fuck but that's because I no longer emotionally attach to media. I can easily understand the many reasons why a gamer would select it as their game of the year. Just as valid as the next subjective selection Imo.

The best part about this is I have friends swear up and down that goty awards are bullshit every year, except this one. Lol.

I think the best purpose for the GotY awards is to highlight anything exceptional for people to check out (though ideally that'd be less marketing motivated and more how the staff really feel), and at least for me it's working as I'd prefer by getting me to buy Journey and to play through Walking Dead, and it convinced me to play RE4 when I was too wimpy for the series prior. But then that's also why I'm only really bugged by something like GameTrailers's awards, at least once they get to best per console: at that point they start to brainlessly rattle off the same games, or even on occasion pick a weak downport over a unique great game for that platform (Rock Band 2 as their last PS2 GotY award, and I half expect we'll see similar for 360/PS3 within a few years).

IGN picked Portal 2 last year, Mass Effect 2 the year before that, Uncharted 2 before that, then Fallout 3, then Super Mario Galaxy, then Okami.

For all the hate IGN gets around here I've never seen the site accused of picking poor GotY choices before.

Hm. Yes, that is a good track record there. I haven't been a member here for too long, and it was at some point last year that I completely quit visiting all the "major" game sites (IGN being the most prominent), because my view of them started becoming...less than favorable. With that much cynicism it becomes easy to think that they'll continue to disappoint at everything they do.

Edit: so it's not that I'm accusing IGN of choosing bad games in the past. Just bad wording and disillusion with gaming news sites in general on my part.
