IGN - Nintendo Fans Around the World React to Switch

Fake news

What's the: "it's different than most stuff I read here on gaf, people who played it find it cool bla bla bla" non sense ?!!?, people aren't bitching about the hardware here...

sure, if it could have been more powerful, it would have been better but people are more complaining about the price of the console ( which is fine to me ), the stupid/overpriced accessories ( ridiculous ), 1,2 switch at 50$ ( should have been bundled ) the lack of information on UI, online stuff etc... and the weak launch lineup...

Of course Nintendo fans are exited, they were exited for Wii U too, they should do the same with average gamer/people and see their reactions about everything Switch.

Well, the moral of that story is don't believe leaks and don't give "leakers" the attention they so desperately crave.

I'm a long time Nintendo fan, but I always keep my expectations in check. I'm just as eager to get my hands on a Switch now as I was before the event. With Nintendo I know what I am getting, great first party games and unique hardware. I don't need leakers to tell me that.

Of course I'd like it to be a little cheaper, but I am sure Nintendo priced it as low as they could (with the technology that's in there) so as still to make a profit.

True, but the paid online has nothing to do with expectations being set too high. That's just straight bad news, and honestly very surprising coming from Nintendo. Kids don't have disposable income and younger kids don't even have pocket money. Just a terrible decision all around. They could have made a paid service without locking online multi behind it.

The absence of Miiverse and StreetPass is also Nintendo taking two steps backwards.

Gaf said that the 3DS has no chance
Against the Vita....
And let's not forget former IGNer Colin Moriarty, that oracle of all things video game.

I know it's been posted tons of times, but it's not enough. Never forget.

Valid points. I still feel like Nintendo is damned if they do and damned if they don't.

A lot of people lambasted them for their archaic online infrastructure and demanded they get into the 21st century. Charging for online (just like their competitors) is probably a result of that, but people still aren't happy.

Miiverse was widely mocked by the wider gaming press.

Streetpass will be missed, but I assume they dropped it for a reason. Presumably battery life and the fact that you are less likely to have a Switch in your pocket when you are out and about.

A vocal group of people ARE INDEED bitching about the hardware whenever they get the occasion, so your first statement is incorrect.

Most hands-on impressions about the Switch I've seen on the web since last week has mostly been favourable but you wouldn't know hanging out here at GAF.

I didn't buy a wii u. Or a 3ds. Feel like I've missed some good games between the two.. Switch is really interesting to me as a replacement for both wiiu and 3ds. I'm going to jump in.

I don't think a lot of people have huge issues with the hardware itself. The negativity stems from the pricing, not only of the console but also of the accessories, the move to a paid online model, the apparent half-assed nature of the online service, the sparse launch lineup, and the general sense that the Switch would have been better served launching in the Fall and that it is being rushed to market to coincide with the end of the fiscal year. Those all seem like valid concerns given what we know and are distinct from the actual quality of the hardware.

Nah bro, get the hell out of here with that excellent, well thought out post. Because clearly any reasonable objection to the Switch means a full blown persecution of Nintendo, by people who weren't going to buy the Switch anyway and unequivocally want Nintendo as a whole to fail.

Seriously, this is one of the best posts that summarizes people's skepticism of the Switch. Skepticism does not mean I want it to fail. I've said time and again I'm going to buy one.

I'm glad some people said that the Joy-Cons are reasonably sized.

But then the Japanese girl said that they are pretty good size "for a girl's hands" so now I'm confused again :-P

Yeah very favourable. Only here us on GAF expect the console to fail

Of course a bunch of YouTubers and Twitch streamers who got special invitations to a big event are going to be upbeat about the Switch. If someone invited you to the red carpet World Premiere for the next Michael Bay movie, you'd probably find something nice to say if someone with a camera put a microphone in your face. But you'd also say something nice at the world premiere of the next Quentin Tarantino movie. The quality of the product in question wouldn't really even enter into it.

I don't think you can read much of anything into their comments.

Why are you trying so hard to downplay positive reactions? It makes you look really bad. This might shock you in this post Trump world but not everyone is paid by the media to say things.

Who said the media is paying for anything? People will say something nice just because it's not polite to badmouth the host of a special event you got invited to. There aren't a lot of wedding videos where the attendees say "Yeah the chicken is really dry and they kinda cheaped out on the open bar, there's no good Scotch to be had."

There's no reasonable way to judge their sincerity, since the context skews everything so heavily.

I recognize D1 and Etika, should I know any of the other people? Youtube personalities?

Arms hype is a little surprisingly. It's been written off a lot on GAF but it looks like something that could end up having a bit more depth than it initially let on.

At the UK event they found people in the crowd, I don't think they're anyone important.

The "home or away" segment made me wonder : am I the only one planning to buy it for lifestyle reasons ? i. e. the ability to play when I want, knowing that I live in a flat with only one TV, shared with someone who doesn't play video games ?

You definitely are not. I think there is a sizeable subset of gamers (like you and me) who want a Switch for that exact reason, though not large enough to make the Switch a success. The question is really how much it appeals to people beyond that subset: will a purely handheld gamer see enough value in the Switch' portability and will a purely console gamer see enough value in the Switch' home console experience? It's hard: it is slightly large for a handheld and its battery is not the highest it's been for handheld (though imo not quite as horrendous as some people claim) yet very powerful, and it is slightly weak for a home console, reaching around 1/3 of the Xbox One in power when docked. We will have to wait and see if those people can warm up to the Switch. On GAF, for example, you can see many disliking the Switch for those reasons, and some like it as one or the other despite the possible flaws it brings to that form factor. The question now is how representative GAF turns out to be in this situation (as we know that GAF highly underestimated the Wii's potential before launch for example).

GAF is niche demographic. The casual market always does opposite of GAF. Only hardcore gamers are on GAF

Tbh, if you read the Switch related threads lately, they don't sound like gamers but more like 12 years old kids, wanting Nintendo to fail for no reason. I mean, Switch is DOA, it's not a handheld but sometimes is, hardware is shit, has no games besides Zelda. This is the first time I see a console launch on gaf and it sure is depressing.

As someone who has literally gone to a red carpet world premiere of a Michael Bay Transformers film, I disagree.... they can butter you up and stuff, but calling a spade a spade!

You should see the mobile game threads here...

About what you'd expect from people at Nintendo fan events. Reminds me of those commercials for horror or kids movies where they "interview" movie theater viewers after they walk out.

Oh come on. This cry baby attitude of 'poor Nintendo, everyone on GAF wants it to fail' is complete garbage. I want Nintendo to succeed because I want to play their games. I am someone that was ready to preorder this thing, until they fumbled everything about it massively. These are legitimate criticisms, not mindless hate.

The London event was open to anyone, you just had to enter a lottery to get a ticket.

Oh and you could bring a guest with you, so in theory up to 50% of the attendees could have been plus ones and thus no reason to be upbeat.

Heck, met one guy there who was really down on the whole thing. Thank goodness they didn't interview them.

A lot of Gaffers took all of those rumors and leaks a little too seriously, and had somehow convinced themselves that they'd be getting a $250 handheld PS4, with Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, Mario Kart, and potentially Smash all as launch titles, alongside massive western third-party support.

When reality set in, and it turned out to just be an above-average Nintendo launch, they lost their goddamn minds.
