IGN: Platinum Games’ Has Never Made A Game Like Scalebound

No, it doesn't. The one thing that PG has done so very well over the years is keeping the Japanese art style in videogames alive. I for one much prefer this style over the west.

The mentality that 'westernization' = 'shit' is annoying.

I trust Kamiya and Platinum. I just wish that MS wouldn't interfere in the development and let them do what they like.

What Kamiya said about the game being a new thing really got me excited. But photo realistic art style... ehhh. That fantasy/over the top art style was something I really loved in Kamiya games. Let's just wait for gameplay footage.

And adventure (Okami)

Well, he said "bringing action games to a new scale" at the reveal, so it probably is an action game. And the reveal trailer really didn't look like an adventure game imo.

I'm definitely more interested in what they're doing with this game versus their other projects. At least with this one I do sense a bigger scale bigger open world type of game so for those reasons alone I'm definitely interested and I am not the biggest Platinum fan.

We’ve never tried to do something photo-real

UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH. Well, it makes a lot of sense MS is their partner in this. "No cartoony stuff, no stylized art either" is probably in their contract or something. Hardly a differentiating factor, disappointing to hear. "Different kind of game" could be interesting, but we've all heard that before. Will want to see more than a CG trailer.

"We're trying to create new gameplay"

Another Devil May Cry clone incoming (especially with how that MC looked lol)... Or maybe some kind of Devil May Cry/Monster Hunter hybrid just to branch out?

The main character doesnt really say what type of game this is, Wonderful101 was new gameplay too, im guessing some kind of action adventure game were you collect monsters?

It's just Kamiya saying things, I doubt he means it's a way different genre or anything.

IGN asked him about Scalebound, he answered in a vague way that probably doesn't mess with Microsoft's marketing plans, and people lose their minds. I'm pretty okay with just letting Kamiya make the game he wants to make and presume he isn't going to be handled by the publisher.

Hyper Active Action Adventure RPG with riding and fighting Dragon!

Sounds good to me. Maybe he can even throw in a few nods to Panzer Dragoon for the obligatory shooting sections.

What I'm personally hoping from the more "realistic" graphic style is something that would be more akin to the "Berserk" manga and other Seinen manga of its ilk.

I mean, having a white-haired pretty boy in the mix would still do a lot to speak to me that this game is going to be stylized as all get out.

Platinum's action games are all significantly different from one another, save perhaps Bayo and Bayo 2.

Zero doubt this will rule.

No, i think they just wanna try something bew actually

This both excites me and scares me.

It sounds like they are stepping away from their usual action game formula, but maybe they're doing something big alongside the action side of the game and that's what is new for them. An open world or something maybe.

I also wonder how much influence Microsoft have on the design on the game. Either way I'm looking forward to seeing what Scalebound is, my most anticipated Xbox One game right now.

I have 0 interest until they say what the game actually is. Should be good if Kamiya is making it, but there are lots of good games out there.

This could pay off very well. W101 was a deviation from the typical action game formula and it was excellent. Hopefully this gives the XBone its first must have exclusive.

Considering the artstyle if both DMC and Bayonetta is influencee more than Europe than japan, I have no idea what you are talking about.

Also, I dont care about the artsyle. Maybe this way Kamiya can make a game that doesn't cringeworthy sections that objectivfy women in what is my view, a perverted way.

I love bayonetta to my core, but I could do less with water dripping off breasts, enemies having glowing lights coming out their vaginas a BDSM themed torture porn. Its bloody crass and ruins a good game.

dude is asked question he can't properly answer, doesn't properly answer it, news at 11

it'll be awesome and maybe even make me buy an Xbone.

Aren't most of his games "experiments"?

Id call DMC an experiement yes, but Viewtful joe and Bayonetta feel more like refinements on established action games.

Okami feels more like a bunch if ideas that have no real cohesion and TW101 just feels like its being different for the sake of being different.

Its tellinh in the ign interview that Okami was basically Kamiya making his dream game without thinking what it would play like.

And TW101 screams "Here is a budget, go nuts".

Kamiya seems to work best when he has a strong producer who is willing to say "No, this doesn't work". I Hope JP is up to the task.

The mentality that 'westernization' = 'shit' is annoying.

I haven't seen a lot of success coming from Japanese developers' attempts to "westernize". Most cases tend to come out as poor man's versions of Western developers' games or degradation of established, well loved IPs. Not to say there isn't any, but do you have any examples of Japanese attempts at westernization that didn't have poor results?

Edit: Conversation already completed on this, see my later posts

Vanquish.

Regardless of how I may have felt about IGN in the past, I have to give them a ton of respect for the amount of coverage they've given Platinum recently.

Vanquish and the first two Souls games are probably the only two really solid examples I can possibly think of.

My bad, then

I'm not. People saying things without actually saying anything is just annoying.

A man of his pedigree dropping hints or providing some commentary about projects is better than your option of saying nothing. Why don't you avoid this thread if the topic title has no value for you?

Id much rather get nuggets of information then nothing at all.

Not really that big on platinum. Only game i cared for was vanquish, so maybe i might like this. More realistic sounds good to me, i'd like to see what they can do instead of being over the top cheeseball

Not necessarily a good thing.

Can I get a recent example on a hands on approach from MS being bad?

Well if the track record for "westernization" was better this mentality would likely not exist.

Critical and/or Commercial reception? Dragon's Dogma, Binary Domain, Shadows of the Damned, Dead Rising. RE5, MGS4, the Souls series, Shinobi 3D, Bionic Commando are a couple of examples. Both new IPs and established franchises.

Different than he's made before? You mean there's not going to be an on-rails vehicle shooter section?! Kamiyaaaaaa!

First, who in the Sam Hill said cultural artstyle actually meant making a game with the back drop depicting that developers home country?

Secondly, if you can't fully enjoy Bayonetta's core gameplay because you can't get past the game's tounge and cheek persona the who's fault is that?

I was about to let this list of games pass, even if a few of the entries are shaky at best, but the bold one sticks out like a sore thumb.

Also you forgot Vanquish

I'm in. After hearing mixed things about W101 for a year and now playing it for myself and loving it, there is basically nothing that will keep me from playing another Platinum/Kamiya game.

Hmmmm not sure i like Kamiya's comments here.

A game they have never done before ? realistic ? I just hope it's not some sort of always online game coop only or some crappy westernized shit like that. I want that Kamiya Japanese touch all over it, no bullshit !

Most of Microsoft's titles have some sort of co-op, you should expect it.

What? Rearmed 1 and 2 were really good. Rearmed 1 specifically is one of the best revivals of a clasic IP of last gen.

I was gonna say HD Remix but that game is bad.

In terms of graphicsl style I would say the closet is the Metal Gear series. That's excluding the bosses.

As much as I like the look, sunset overdrive is an extreme outlier in big MS titles. A "safe" visual presentation would certainly fit the standard. Not going to get too disappointed or excited without real footage or details on gameplay.

Oh oh ooooooh.

My bad.

I thought you meant the Bionic Commando Reboot, not Rearmed.
