IGN Review - Final Fight: Streetwise (PS2)

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/692/692234p1.html

3.5 Presentation
Cut-scenes are generally boring, though at one point Kyle makes a hilariously ill-timed decision to answer his cell phone. The camera is awful.
2.0 Graphics
A few interesting character models. Other than that this game looks like someone dumped chocolate ice cream on moldy cardboard.
4.5 Sound
An entertaining soundtrack can't compensate for utterly uninspired sound effects. If I'm going to spend all game cracking jaws, it needs to at least sound fearsome.
4.5 Gameplay
A decent fighting system is hurt by the camera, several insufferable mini-games and downright stupid enemy A.I.
2.0 Lasting Appeal
The arcade mode is boring and there's no way you'd ever replay the story mode. The bonus materials provide a slight incentive.
3.6 Bad

If you're a sucker for beat-em-ups, you might be able to enjoy this one, though probably not. The fighting system itself is has a few interesting features, but almost everything else about the game will either frustrate or annoy. The camera, the enemy A.I., almost every aspect of the graphics, the sound effects and the required mini-games are all decidedly sub-par. So while a decent fighting system may exist and even be easier to use than on Xbox, it's lost in the myriad flaws this game possesses. In the end, Streetwise is an update where to play is to suffer.

Guess Capcom had to put out a steaming pile sooner or later.

Dawn of Dreams is just around the corner though, so I forgive them. :D

Jesus, what the hell happened?

Same team that made Final Fight Revenge made this crap. It's mind-blowing that Capcom let them make another FF game after that, isn't it?

It was Capcom Digital Studios, wasn't it? They did the Maximo games, and those were fantastic. I could see giving them another chance. Man though, a 3.6 from IGN, of all places. That's got to hurt.

All these 3D beatem ups this year which made me hope we were returning to the golden age of streets of rage fun....and in the end NOBODY could make a f'n good one?

Beatdown
Urban Reign
and now Final Fight.... wtf....

Take Urban Reign out of that list; it's fun. :)

I liked Urban Reign. Smooth gameplay, lots of really cool looking grapples, team up attacks...it doesn't take much to make a fun beat em up.

Plus it had Paul and Law.

I didn't think so, and I think it's incomplete... each fight takes place in it's own separate area? ...and how do I put this politely... ah I got it... Urban Reigns AI progression is... uneven.

Hell I had more fun with DJ FFNY... oh yeah good point alumn Warriors wins this generation.

looking for a great beat em up? Try The Warriors.

Rockstar Games showng eastern developers how beat em ups in the new generation are done.

Capcom Studio 8 had nothing to do with this. This game was developed by Secret Level.

Ryu ga Gotoku is by far the best beatem up of this generation, and is in line for my personal GOTG.

Buy it when(if) it comes stateside, or import it.

I've play Urban Reign and I could tell you its one of the best beat'em up I've played to date. Why IGN underrate it so bad I don't know, but Urban Reign was SOR reincarnated. The same could be said spikeout.

As for Final Fight: SW, you can tell that game was crap from the start. I mean, it was nothing like a FF game and its like capcom bastardized GTA+FF.

Good for you, I've also played Urban Reign and it definitely has the AI issues I mentioned, I also don't like the disconnect of simply moving from one arena to the next... why it bothers me in Urban Reign and not in the Def Jam series... I'm not sure yet.

Urban Reign rox lah.

Why they tried to turn this into a Final Fight-themed game is beyond me. Looked like a disaster a million years ago and miles away.

Urban Reign was forgettable.

I'm sort of bummed by this one. I didn't think it was going to be great, but I read a few decent impressions from last e3 or something. ah, bummer.

I wish I had a good "I told you so" image. :P

The way I see it, this doomed effort was started before Capcom's recent turnaround with treating their classic properties with more respect (MHX, MMPU, etc).

Okay, now let's have a REAL Final Fight follow up please.

wtf, Urban Reign was GREAT!

and A.I. issues?

what, because the A.I. could do almost everything you could including throw break and air techroll?

the only really fucked up battle was Mission 98 ... that one with
Golem & Napalm 99

i played The Warriors after Urban Reign and found the warriors to be pretty much a generation behind in gameplay mechanics :/

No way it sucked balls how can you enjoy a game that should have been co-op and stages that last about as long as the levels in between cut scenes in the bouncer.

black bias :P

Anyways, my beat-em-up happy fun time list for this gen goes like this -

Warriors
Def Jam FFNY
Urban Reign

AI issues aside, there's something to be said about the free-for-all insanity that UR presents. Buddies of mine who rarely game had to be pried away from the controller. :lol

Yeah, I hear that retard strength is pretty scary shit. :P

It's a shame Sega never released Spikeout on the Dreamcast. Which was one of the main reasons I was so pissed off at Sega over that awful system. Saturn > Dreamcast! :D

well, for one, it's 100 missions, making it longer than most other beat-em-ups

and then there's the whole 'great gameplay' and 'awesome combat system' thing

but hey some people would rather a game where they scroll across a repetitive background beating on wave upon wave of mindless denizens

MoxManiac said:
Is beatdown worth $10?

[ ] Yes
[ ] No
Nope. I felt ripped off at $12, and I would have at $10. Broken combat, un-fun missions, HORRIBLE "we desperately want this to be cool" writing and cutscenes and voicework. It's a mess. The character customization options it gives you are pretty extensive, but they're wasted on the game.

As Katamari said, I would be more pissed if Dawn of Dreams wasn't on the horizon. Just in the demo, I played the Test of Valor trials for a good hour, and felt like playing it over right after. I cannot wait. o_o

Btw, is Spikeout any good? I remember reading out the arcade version way back when it was being hyped, and the idea of an online beat em up has me interested.

I've always felt that Spikeout was the true 3D successor to the Streets of Rage series. Some of the animation is pretty wonky and the visuals are nothing to write home about, but it's 60fps and multiplayer.

Funny thing is that I still see it being for sale at a few websites...even with a pressing of less then 4000, SOA still made too many copies. :lol
