IGN Review Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

There *will* be another Jak game, it's too popular of a franchise to leave behind. Naughty Dog may not be the ones to do it, or they may be, but I'm dead certain we'll see Jak and Daxter on PS3.

Well Naughty Dog has always been about 1 new franchise each gen and then improved sequels until the end of the gen.

It's just sad to see ND go from Crash (98% platforming) to Jak (80% platforming) to Uncharted (10-20% platforming) as a platformer fan. ND platforming is the best in the business outside of Mario because unlike everyone else whose afraid to make tough sections for fear of scaring off casuals, ND makes their platforming hard and rewarding. They do the same with their action too, which is why Uncharted is hard and rewarding.

Anyhow I really enjoy Uncharted and cannot wait for the full version...but I still want more of those ND jumps I love.

Oh ND will be the one who does it. They aren't going to let anyone else touch the main Jak games. Evan was asked about how he feels about what's happened to the Crash series and he compared it to seeing your daughter do porn.

Well keep in mind that it does draw those textures twice as many times per second as Uncharted, so perhaps the 10 is for effort.

What effort, populating the game with shit textures just to up the framerate? That's fine, but it also means it's not worth that 10.

Gears of War?

Can't wait to buy this down here. I think Australia gets it a bit after you guys. Like 5th of December or some shit

Gears of War on PC, perhaps. But then it's still a very static image.

They'll probably do bi-yearly releases with their two IPs like Insomniac is probably doing with Resistance/Ratchet.

I just wish it was longer. Resident Evil 4 was a juggernaut that showed that an adventure/shooter like this can still be a tour-de-force even for 20 full hours. I still expect this to be my GOTY.

Don't go there, friend. I feel your pain.

one needs to go there. I make even half that kind of remark about the Wii and i get banned for a month. He needs to explain himself or it is nothing but a post to start arguments.

Episodic content for this while they work on Jak: Next Gen would be more than sufficient imo. :D

Absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on this one.

While this is all subjective, and Gears of War looks astonishingly good, I can easily say that Uncharted is AT LEAST its equal, and in many ways is far more attractive from an artistic perspective. Technically, what's going on in Uncharted is astonishing as well so it's really all semantics. If Gears of War is a "10" in visuals, so is Uncharted in any event.

Look, don't get me wrong. I know what your saying, I've seen nothing but screenshots of Uncharted, but I have faith in ND anyway. I love the Jak games.

I'm just saying is all. So far, I think Gears is the only current gen game to receive a 10 as far as I can remember, thats all.

Me personally, when it comes to graphics, I look at things differently than most. Not just how it 'looks', but like you, Inotice everything that's going on, and I lik eto tinker with the engine BEHIND what you see.

So I can imagine Drake would look fanfuckingtastic. Same way I think Halo 3 and Resistance are both underrated graphically. Where I'm one of the few who believes COD4 is OVERRATED graphically. It does look great, but when you delve a little deeper, there's some corners kind of being cut to get that great 'look'. I'm sure you of all people know what I mean rox.

FYI: Geometry pop-in (as the term "pop-in" is typically used) is not the same as texture pop-in.

BioShock had minor issues with texture pop-in.

Honestly, from playing the demo, I'd say the water's probably worth knocking it down from 10 to 9 on the graphics side of things. Rough transitions between animations and tearing contribute too.

That water itself looks amazing. The way it interacts with drakes does not. Still confused by your statement.

My point exactly.

Gears had pop in, some frame rate issues, some clanky animations, and LOD issues that made killzone1 look good..yet got a 10 for graphics!

now uncharted comes around with hands down the best graphics on consoles right now...with some minor tearing issues ( only in 1080i btw) and pop in that 99% of people out there didn't even notice, and gets a meer 9/10

BS.

I go to sleep then, but know that my heart remains with you, and this poor thread. :lol

Unfortunate side-effect of not giving enough swag. ;)

reall?? The interaction was what impressed me the most. It wasn't just the same effect as the bullets hitting the water, it really looked like he was moving through it

Er, COD4. Yes, COD4. :lol

ok, I forgot that one.

I fail to see the funny. Amirox was just asking what it takes to get a 10. I found Gears, but that's the only one I could think of at the time. calm down.

Gears also had almost no dynamic shadows, no AA, no interactive enviroments which were quite small. Uncharted is way above GeoW technically.

The funny is that COD fucking 4 with its consistently inconsistent graphics quality scored a fucking 10 for graphics, and Uncharted scores a 9. That's what's "funny".

Gears of War is also technically inferior. The landscape of Uncharted and the amount of characters, details, and all the foliage that are being drawn at a stable framerate is unbelievable.

You might prefer the art style of Gears, that's fine, but Uncharted is better graphically - on every single technical level.

The environments in Uncharted don't seem to be that interactive.

The parts of his clothes that make contact with water get more and more wet... and then slowly dries off.

It's cool to have Drake roll through that pond in the demo and have him come up with his clothes soaking.

It just seems so real.

What? Being able to platform the environment is what I call "interactivity."

Well you can't brake everything, but either way there is stuff to break, the other thing is that Uncharted's enviroments aren't static, like they are in Gears. You're inside alive jungle which moves and breethes, and casts dynamic shadows on everything, shadows that don't flicker.

lol I brought my ps3 over to my best friend's house to finally show him some of the new hot shit (and finally finish a resitance co-op run), For some reason, RandC looked much better on his tv than Uncharted(lots of jaggies, don't know why), but when I got to the pond I said 'watch this' and rolled into the water. Jaw dropped! :) That and the wet rocks too.

What?

Know what, nevermind. This gen, graphics scores aren't even needed anymore.

The water itself just looks so amazing and real, then he gets in it and i lose that sense. Not sure how to explain it. Drake himself puts effort into moving in the water, and i get that. But the water doesn't really move out of his way at all. I dunno, I'm just being overly nitpicky :D

I'm sure someone else could explain it better as i have seen others do.

Edit - COD4 got a 10 for graphics? :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol i see why people are somewhat upset at UDF getting a 9 now.

Oh well, I'm sure this will register as one of the more glowing reviews. Somehow I think the most unbelievable of the graphics complaints are yet to be seen.

Was about to say the same thing.

GS and 1up next.

8.5 Lasting Appeal
The game is short, but the medals, rewards and bonuses should be enough to bring you back at least once.
this is why i plan to rent this game. 8 hours is just not enough to pay $60.

I don't know but has anybody actually PLAYED and LOOKED AT Gears lately? I'm not saying it doesn't look great, it certainly does, but I went from playing the Uncharted demo last night to firing up Gears on hardcore and then going back to the Uncharted demo, and whether it's the visuals (the Uncharted demo has a real crispness to it, a great interplay between light and shadows, whereas Gears just looks really dirty, the character models looked rough in comparison, and one can notice a lot of instances where shadows were missing from some of the cover spots) or the actual gunplay (the machine guns in Gears were so damn inaccurate, I was pumping magazines into these locusts and it took a lot of bullets to bring them down, the roadie run made me nauseous and just the way Fenix moved around was really sluggish, compared to the Uncharted demo where I was blessed with speed, quickness, agility and accuracy, it's like playing HALO 3 or Resistance compared to other FPS that just feels labored and sluggish in comparison whether it's in terms of movement or aiming).

Dang dude, you got a thing for COD4. It's just a 60 frame game trying to get by in this 30 frame world.

Well then your definition of "interactivity" is fucked up.

So, being confined inside a cubicle is your definition of 'interactivity?' There is plenty of interactivity. You cannot hide behind every single thing in Uncharted because the enemy can blow it to pieces. The jungle moves, breathes, and it is alive in every way possible. You can climb on top of a wall with a hole/window in it, hang from that said window ledge, and shoot the bad guys while under cover. How is that not 'interactive?'
