IGN reviews Patapon 2 - 9.5

Patapon 2 is more engaging and makes you use all of your classes, it's easier to customize because of the control the Evolution Tree gives you over your army, it's more transparent thanks to its tip screens and item-exchanging mini-games, it's more well-rounded because of the multiplayer options and it's just an all-around awesome game. If someone had only played the first few missions or glanced at some screens, I could understand why he or she would write the game off as a clone, but this experience is so much deeper than the original that you really can't fault it for looking like its brother. Fans of the last game should have no apprehension about picking this game up, while noobs should climb aboard and be thankful for the explanations and demos they get this time around.

Back in 2008, I said that Patapon was the greatest game on the PSP; this year, that torch has been passed to Patapon 2.

9.5

I want a physical copy. :(

Just finished it. It's as good as Patapon 1 although I didn't like the evolution stuff. Too much text, to many differen items, to much grinding. I would love to give it a 10/10 because of the great gameplay mechanics and the style but the frustration, grinding and so on is really taking it down like Patapon 1. In the end im happy that it's over. 8,5/10.

It got a 7 in the latest swedish Super Play if I recall correctly, and I'd trust them over IGN anyday. They said it was worse than the original.

If I was one of those who base his purchases on reviews, I'd be pulling my hair right about now.

Just another overrated review from the Playstation team of IGN.
If the reviewer really likes the game, and thinks that the game is a 9.5 game in his opinion, why is it then a overated review? :) Is it overated compared to what you might think of the game, that you probably wont think that it is a 9.5 game?

Ah ok. A review is only one (or several) person's opinion about a game (or something else that is reviewed), and opinions can variate from person to person, which seems to be the case with Patapon 2 now. But ye, i guess that it is not always easy to know which review that has the most similar opinions that youself have (generally speaking, not just directed at you), especially if the different reviews have relatively big difference in the review score on how much they like the game or not :)

There is a demo of Patapon 2 by the way. Unfortunately i am not sure how much you get to play in the demo though, but i guess that people get to play alittle of the game at least :)

They were complete idiots then. Because it is improved over the original in every single conceivable way, so you can stop trusting them at all now!

Great game, great score. Buy it.

They are so wrong then - the only thing one can accuse Patapon 2 of (apart from the fact that it's not too good at introducing its world to newcomers) is that they've recycled a lot of assets from the first game. But the art style and design is so unique and iconic that people shouldn't even mind that in my opinion.
The same goes for the Patapon gameplay, it's so simple (and pretty much perfect as far as the basics are concerned) they would have only messed it up had they changed too much.

So they added stuff -and lots of stuff- in every area without changing the core of what made the game good. That is exactly what a sequel of a great game should do so I don't get the complaints. If every sequel would add as much as they did with Patapon 2 we'd all be better off for it. This is a much bigger game than the original Patapon and that makes it better for people who like the franchise.

Or Japan, I guess.

Sure, but people who import it from Asia should know Japanese or be prepared to look up Gamefaqs. There are quite a few hints in the mission descriptions, in the Patapon speech bubbles and in the Patapon evolution tree. Missing those would make the game unnecessarily complicated. Patapon veterans should still be alright, but I would recommend importing a European version.

Anybody who imports should keep in mind though that save games aren't compatible across regions so you won't be able to import a US Patapon 1 save into the new game from a different region. Doesn't matter much though. I had to start from scratch as well and it wasn't a big deal at all.

You should write your own review and post it up somewhere so that you may fight this injustice.

I've had it preordered at Amazon for ever, but I'm still pissed off that this turned out to be digital distribution only for us.

Will not buy. I'd buy it if there were a UMD. I feel like I'm being punished and I have 45 PSP games that I purchased. I bought about 35 new at retail and the rest through Goozex. I know piracy is a problem, but the people who truly get screwed are those of us who've been paying for the disks and haven't pirated a thing. I know, old discussion, but I'm still pissed about this, and I'm not going to reward this. The only way to send the message is to not buy this game. They can sell it to me for $5 as a digital download if they want me to buy something that dies when the PSP dies.

IGN used to be my go to place to check most of my reviews on games. As of late I have been greatly disappointed with there reviews, most just seem way off base anymore.

LOL @ complaints

You are NOT required to COMPLETE the evolution tree! The fact that the evolution tree is much more user-friendly than what 1 offered is something good! More stuff to grind and such? NO ONE IS FORCING YOU TO DO THAT.

And yeah, Patapon 2 >>>> Patapon 1. A lot of people agreed on that.

CFW can't run downloadable games from PSN ? just since the last PSP update or before that ?

Oh, it can, that's not the issue. I'm not a fan of digital distribution in ANY sense.
I buy my game discs, my CDs, my DVDs, and rip them myself, as applicable.

And Edge's 5. :\

EDIT: wtf bitching about not having a UMD release? Really? After all this complaining about how shit UMDs are and how ripping to a memory stick is so much better (AND IT IS), NOW you complain about no UMDs?!

You'd have to have taken a nap in a turned on microwave to not understand the distinction between the two complaints.

People who complain about UMDs complain about them because they ARE shitty and CFW is required to rip your own. They're a terrible format. The complaint isn't "we don't want a physical release", it's "we want more control over the physical release we do have". Digital downloading removes the physical element, for the collector types, and lowers the amount of control we have over the game we own... well, wait, we don't own it anymore.

We own a licence to redownload it. Boy I sure hope those servers don't go down in a few years.

So... back up the ISO on an external hard drive if you're really that worried that Sony's going to deprive you of future Patapon 2 loving? Sorry if my reading comprehension is a little off; it's kind of hard to read through all the MvC2-related semen in my eyes. :\

I don't appreciate some of the regressive attitudes in this thread.

I don't appreciate one consumer group (the digital download folks) cramming their desires down my throat. I don't give a shit if you want all of your game DD. I hope all games are available as a DD in the future for those that want their games that way. I still want to be able to buy a copy though.

I don't like Sony, or Microsoft, or Nintendo have 100% sway over what happens to the game I bought going forward. If one of those companies gets out of the game space, they can shut down the servers and as per their license agreements, kill my game download that paid for in the process. I prefer to just own everything so that I can keep forever.

I like DD games when they are $10 or less. I can deal with the possibility that my purchase will be voided by one of these companies going out of business or getting out of gaming and shutting down their servers, but I'm not paying more than $10 for something that can just be taken away whenever they want.

Oh gee, that sounds like fun. Or I could buy a disk and shove it on my shelf forever to be used when I want.

So then teach Sony a lesson and don't buy the game! Make sure it fails and cost us the possibility of a really good Patapon 3 because they have no confidence in the series because their test failed!

I'm not sure if you realize this or not, but PSP is pretty much going in the direction of DD-only and there's nothing you can really do to stop it. UMD's too much of a liability.

Oh please, it's the best you're going to get without importing and it serves the same goddamn purpose - you have the game at instant access whenever you want it. Stop with the entitled collection-whore mentality, and I say this as someone who is an obsessive-compulsive collector of things.

I'm talking about the "No UMD No Buy" attitude. I don't have a problem with any view on the subject, I just think it's stupid to pass a good game for that reason. It should only be a minor inconvenience, not a matter of protest that might lead to hurting an aspiring skilled developer.

To paraphrase a great man:

No physical no buy. Sorry.
When i'll be done with Patapon the first I may look at importing.

Oh boy. Whatever people, it's your money, do whatever you like.

I understand that, and I don't care if there is no Patapon 3 if they're only going to release it at more than $10 as a DD. I don't want it if that's their plan. Plus Sony SUCKS at managing their prices on PSN. Do we ever see Steam like sales? No. I buy a ton of stuff off of Steam because of their sales. World of Goo at $5, sign me up. Orange Box at $10, sign me up. Patapon 2 for $20, forget it. Sony almost never runs a sale on PSN, so I buy a lot less.

If PSP is headed toward all digital download, then I'm pretty much done buying PSP games. Again, all they are doing is punishing those of us who have never pirated a thing. Yeah, they're punishing the pirates too, but it's a huge net they are casting, and I'm stuck in it. I'd rather they release a PSP 2, with rock solid DRM than change the way we receive our games mid generation. Nintendo doesn't have any problem selling boatloads of DS games, so Sony should do whatever they are doing. And I don't like UMD, I wish they'd go to flash based games, but I still want a cart with a box to stick on my shelf, and I want to control my license and not have it ripped from me at some point.

And just to prove I'm not a full of shit pirate whining about this, here's my PSP collection in all of its glory.

Sony has run sales on PSN in the past. I've seen some very good games on sale for about half price.
