IGN Soul Calibur IV Preview - with Yoda gameplay video

http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/876/876529p1.html

Against my precious Seung Mina at that, alot of her attacks missed ffs.. *sigh*

As for the Force, well, Yoda does have some minor power applications here. He can perform Force pushes, which can aid in ring outs or (more often) to give some spacing. This is balanced by a special energy meter that drains when Yoda uses the Force.

And then there is the height. Yoda is short -- there's no way around it. And that means that if he is standing on the ground, he won't be hit by high attacks. Don't worry though -- Yoda doesn't stay on the ground for long. There are plenty of opportunities to land high attacks when Yoda is airborne. Though he's quick, those who play defensively and with patience will find their opportunities to strike.

Though there are some limitations to the power of his lightsaber and use of the Force, Yoda is still very much the bad ass we witnessed in Episode Two. He moves with incredible speed and has numerous combos that launch him into the air. One move has the wizened Jedi somersaulting and then planting his foot into the opponent's face repeatedly without needing to touch the ground. He's nimble, quick, and a small target.

Yoda is the kind of character that, if played with some expertise, will give your opponents fits. Nothing could be more humiliating then to have Yoda beckon you forward with a taunt only to then have him launch into the air and unleash a fury of lightsaber attacks. If you don't use defense, battles with Yoda come to a quick end.

It isn't all biscuits and gravy with Yoda. He does have some weaknesses to help balance him out. That short stature may cancel out high attacks from enemies, but it also makes Yoda's reach the worst in Soulcal IV. He has no choice but to get up close and personal. Against someone like Kilik, who can extend his range with the bo staff, Yoda can be in for some trouble.

Though he is an exclusive character, Yoda is not an unlockable. He's ready to go from the moment you pop the disc into your 360. And he is subject to all of the same gameplay rules as the other characters. That means the new armor destruction feature is in effect. We were too busy beating the snot out of the AI to see what it might look like when Yoda has armor destroyed, but we're sure it won't happen too often anyway.

Along with Yoda, there is a bonus stage added to the mix. Yoda gets to do battle in an Imperial shuttle bay. Set on a raised walkway, the arena is long, but narrow. To make it just a touch more interesting, there are energy fields that move up and down the path during battle, expanding and retracting the fighting area throughout the contest. To top it off, you get some classic Star Wars theme music playing in the background of this stage.

Yoda may be an odd fit for the Soulcalibur universe, but he's a cool addition nonetheless. He might not be the character you default to for each match, but he's certainly going to be worth mastering over the long haul. This is authentic Yoda. He looks like him, fights like him and even talks like him. We only wish Vader also appeared on 360 so we could stage an epic Jedi battle. Who knows, maybe this will spawn a Soulcalibur vs. the Star Wars universe title in the future.

Be sure to check IGN PS3 on Tuesday for hands-on impressions with the Dark Lord of the Sith himself, Darth Vader.

All I noticed in that clip was the constantly repeated grunts by Seong Mina. "EW! EW! AGH! EW! EW! EW! AHH! AGH! EW EW!"

Is nostalgia mistaking me, or didn't Soul Calibur not sound this repetitive before? You'd think with all the file capacity they have on these discs they could at least afford to create more grunt sounds. :lol

omg the rolling was so cute hahaha that said, he looks like a good match against xiang hua in extremely close quarters. I hope he has crappy health and damage to balance stuff up

for the lol, notice the ducks walking on the background ? i hope they can be chopped to pieces

Seems like he'll be a character that no one will use because they don't want to cop "fucking cheap player" insults.

Or just a Star Wars title. But I suppose that makes too much sense.

Imagine some of the BGs...From Yoda's SwampWorld to Skywalker's DesertLand to the Emporer's Deathsphere...it would be pretty sweet.

I consider people that whine about "cheap player" stuff just based on who you pick to be horrible players that can't accept that they aren't as good as you are.

If you're good you can beat any character excuses. Thats the way I see it anyway.

That is the most broken shit since Servbot in MVC2. But he had the disdvantage of doing almost no damage with his attacks. This game is gonna be shit online if Yoda is allowed.

From the video, there's plenty of delay after his attacks so he's wide open. It's a matter of how he is played out. Abusive low attacks. Put a long range type character against him and he doesn't stand a chance. There are cheap ways to play, or tactful ways to play. Chose your poison.

Ducks? :lol

Oh man.

Sure you can slaughter them, just the same way you can beat piggies to a bloody pulps in Tekken 6.

Isn't this obvious coming from a game series fameous for it's sick, bloody visuals?

That was fantastic. I agree that Mina's grunts were oddly repetitive, but aside from that I saw only good. Loved the dodos. I think Mina may have been AI controlled. She certainly looked it, and no human player could be that weak. Regardless, I don't see anything shockingly unbalanced about Yoda from his moveset. I'm not at all worried about him being overpowered now; especially not in a series in which every new player repeatedly falls victim to Astaroth's spinning axe grab. The little green muppet looks awesome, and I'll add him to my roster as soon as he's up for download on PSN. No matter how ridiculous I think the SW gimmick is, I can't deny the fun factor now I've seen him in action.

Waaaaait a minute. The lack of a "hum" with each strike of Yoda is disturbing. It's a faint sound if you turn the volume up but...eh.

Having long since tossed out any belief that they're going to attempt to balance the game, I just want SCIV so I beat the crap out of things with Siegfried and Cassandra.

Yea, he doesn't seem to be that bad. I'm pretty sure this was a case of them showcasing Yoda, and having the A.I./person play dumb in order to let him shine. That force jump thing has a delay and probably will be easy as hell to counter, since you can see it coming a mile away. :lol

So... did anyone else notice this paragraph from the article?

So... yeah... armor destruction feature huh?

Battle Raper anyone?

I like how multiple people are calling him broken when the article clearly states his weaknesses. You haven't even played it yet, chill out.

That feature's announcement was a whiles back, actually. Most of the people interested would know about it.

It's your life's mission to go around and suck out all the fun out of people's lives isn't it?

Would your life be more or less fun if I answered honestly? I can't tell you until I know that.

It looks absolutely borked.

After the broken crap-fest that was SCIII, I doubt I'll actually pick this up. Luckily PS3 fans won't have to put up with Yoda..

It looks absolutely borked? From this footage?

Really?

Yoda is playable first? Ugh this is annoying because I guess it means the 360 version is the lead platform.

A crappy ai character with someone who has no clue how to play yeah the game's borked, cancel the title asap. Thank god competition for SC4 already banned him and vader not as if needs to happy anyone with range + decent launchers will be putting him down quick.

how so...its obvious he has to come in close, he has no range at all.

I was hoping the light sabers would make the electronic swooshing sound from the movies.

Overall I like the way it looks (from the small video) but some of the movement seems a bit off or something. This game is supposed to have Vader in it as well right, any video's of him?

Is Vader going to have the same stage, and how does he play? I imagine super slow and powerful.

He shouldnt be. His lightsaber style is all about pushing the offensive and overwhelming the opponent.
