I did a search and found nothing, sorry if its posted before.

IGN said:
The videogame industry is built on franchises. Whether it's Lara Croft, Mario or Madden, franchises dominate store shelves. Though some may complain that there are too many sequels, many of the greatest games in history are one piece of a larger franchise. To honor the importance of these ongoing sagas, the IGN editorial brain trust has voted for the Top 25 Videogame Franchises of all time.

When voting, editors were asked to consider the overall importance of the franchise, the strength of its library of titles and the excitement for future games in the series. None of the editors agreed completely, as personal favorites earned higher votes from some. When it comes to games, what you love (and have fun playing) is always going to have some sway in your vote.

I love Castlevania, but putting it at #4 is a joke.

Conversely, I'm not a superfan of the series, but it's clear that this list NEEDS MORE DIABLO.

#16 - Tom Clancy Series

Is this supposed to encompass all of them, SC, R6, etc.? Kind of weird. EDIT: Oh I see now, didn't click the link before.

Nice to see Metroid get some lovin'.

This is surprisingly unbiased sounding and rather accurate to boot.

Oblivion approves.

Would Halo even count? 2 games does not a franchise make. I don't know why Half Life got in either really, although I guess you could make a case for it.

at least Virtua Fighter made the top 25 in before Mortal Kombat, Tekken or Dead Or Alive.

but Dungeons & Dragons???? the only good D&D games were Capcom arcade beat-em-ups, that's it

Baldur's Gate, Planescape...?

Castlevania very much deserves to be where it is.

As far as Diablo, look up the definition franchise.
As fun as it is to alot of people, it is a drop in the bucket.

So Gran Turismo didnt make the top 25 even though the franchise has sold more than 40 million dollars. Interesting.
40 million dollars?

Selling 800k units is nothing special.

In before the bitching.

:lol

Does it seem like IGN comes out with this type of list ever Odd month. What changes have there been that we need these lists so frequently?

A Top 25 "important list"...
And, no Mortal Kombat???..Considering that it is the best selling fighting game series..and the game that practically started the ESRB ratings....

They are not talking about a single game, they are talking about franchises.

I really didnt know that Castlevania was more sucessfull ($$) than gran turismo.

:lol

The lack of Halo will certainly doom this list.
The fact that it's a LIST dooms the list. The fact that Halo isn't on it is literally absurd. :lol

IGN: Reporting on the things that don't matter and we don't care about, and doing it badly. (TM)

$40m ~ 800k sales

Probably you meant 40m copies.

I had this insane fear that Halo would be in the top 5. Much to my delight it's exactly where it needs to be.

Chrono shouldn't be on the list.

Civilization is wayyy to high.

Castlevania shouldn't be in the top 10.

Madden should be top 5. No other franchise can come out EVERY year and sell as well.

Weird, Mega Man should be higher up on that list and Halo should replace Chrono. Chrono series is not a franchise and there are no plans to expand it... officially. Also, while some may say Halo is not a franchise because it is only 2 games... it is obviously being packaged and sold like one through media.

again, it's not about Sales Age, it's about impact, contribution and evolution

that is why Virtua Fighter is on the list.

I love Scorpion, Raiden and Sub-Zero, but the game play is so clunky and constipated and the series is one of the shallowest fighter franchises

How the **** did Chrono make it on that list?

This question needs to be asked again and in all caps..

HOW THE **** DID CHRONO MAKE IT ON THE LIST???

Okay, so I read past the first two choices, and I gotta say it's not as reasonable as I thought.

For example, why is the Chrono series on there? And I would have assumed Mortal Kombat would make the list somewhere.

I like it how the Castlevania blurb is just a sorry attempt at trying to justify their reasons for putting Castlevania above Metroid.

"Yah it kinda copied the Metroid formula and yah it does have a good 3d entry like Metroid but........... uh............?"

Why isn't Mega Man, C&C, and the Sim series higher on the list? I mean, these are the franchises that have a bunch of games and the majority are pretty damn popular. Dunno why MGS is so high on the list. I think it deserves to be in the Top Ten, but not higher then some of the most famous franchises of all time.

If you think Castlevania is the fourth most important franchise in videogames, that's your opinion. However if Chrono Trigger counts as a franchise, Diablo is a ****ing shoo-in.
