IGN Versus: PS4 vs. Xbone (People Choice Awards)

The PS4 certainly has a positive mindshare right now. But it reeaeaally needs some games. I never thought I could get bored with three shooters, but I can! And I have! And-- wait, what was I thinking?

IGN asked if your preferred the PS4 or Xbone across multiple categories.

So funny.

IN MY OPINION
The PS4 gets the better controller and hardware, but the rest isn't close imo.

Sony has the hype train right now, so kudos to them, but the PS4 definitely doesn't have better games, software, online right now.

The X1 has better exclusives RIGHT NOW. How anyone could say their OS is better than the X1's is beyond me, and how people could say PSN is better than XBL is crazy especially with all of the issues PSN had in the past weeks with connecting and stuff.

I have both. No fanboy nonsense. Just speaking from what i think.

I'm not sure why people dismiss the games library, then only come up with the lowest rated content starved Forza, middling - mediocre reviewed Ryse and dead rising as their defense. But also fail to mention, terrible games like loco cycle and pay/grind like hell to progress games like powerstar golf and crimson dragon.

Ryse is basically on par with Knack so can't one up there.

Dead rising is the only contender and yet no one will remember it in a years time. No one even talks about it now.

No one mentions the ps4 has Resogun, contrast, Warframe, blacklight, war thunder, dcuo, flow, flower, escape plan, don't starve, doki doki universe and the better performing multi platform titles.

The only thing on that list i wouldn't agree on is the online. But if download speeds are a apart of that can see why.

The Ds4 wins the controller stakes for me just cos of the tiny sticks and horrible bumper placement on xbox one. Battery life is fucking terrible though.

I would say the Xbox gets the controller and the games, and PS4 gets the hardware. I can't comment on the online or the OS as I haven't had much time with either on the PS4.

Edit: Dead rising is the only contender and yet no one will remember it in a years time. No one even talks about it now.

The hours I've put into Dead Rising is a drop in the ocean to what I've put into Killer Instinct....

While the overall tendency towards the PS4 is obviously reflected in the results of the pools I cannot say that I would have voted any different.

welp.

Overall - Peope Choice Awards: PS4 68% / Xbone 32%

68 - 32 = 36

He was talking in relative terms so the percentage points difference isn't the best measure which makes it even worse as they give up a >100% advantage in relative terms. Though to be fair he was also talking about the power advantage (which is still >30%).

Its likely that people who won a PS4 are fanboys. Which is not a negative thing by the way , it means boys who are fans. Surprise.
Doesn't this suggest that XBone buyers are somewhat apathetic toward their purchase?

Even if this whole 'vociferous fanbase' thing were true, that only cements which of the consoles is the 'people's choice'.

I dunno, I actually agree with the poll wholeheartedly. To me, the PS4 wins hands down.

Best controller: I really do like the Dualshock 4, it just feels good to use.

Hardware: Well this is obvious.

Games libary: Not a big shoot em up guy but I do love variety and PS4 currently has more.

System Software: This is where it gets iffy, they both have great software but I prefer the UI on PS4, plus I'm also a bit annoyed the XBox One is built around TV which is useless to me as an Englishman.

Online: Both do online just as well as each other, you still have to pay but at least with PS+ you get "free" games.

It's obvious that people would choose the DS4. Whoever thought up asymmetrical analog sticks is completely out of touch with the players.

Not surprised by the results in all honesty.

As someone who owns both, the results are pretty similar.

For controller, I like both equally. Both have things I like more on the other so they are pretty much equal. Both are comfortable and functional though.

Hardware obviously has to go to PS4 due to just being the more powerful system.

Games library, I got to give it to the Xbone. I'm judging it mostly from an exclusives stand point as I play most multiplatform games on PC. I really enjoyed Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Forza, Zoo Tycoon, Killer Instinct and Powerstar Golf. A pretty nice variety of games that are all enjoyable to me. That's pretty much every launch exclusive.

As for PS4, I really liked Resogun and Killzone: Shadowfall's MP. That's it. In terms of future exclusives though, I like Sony's offerings more. (Order: 1887, Uncharted, Infamous..). However, if we count multiplatform games, I can see why the majority goes for PS4. The multi-platform is experience is superior on PS4.

System software, I got to give it to PS4. I prefer it's much more minimalistic design and ease of use with controller. It's just a very simple and effective UI. Not saying Xbox One's isn't bad, but it's obviously designed more so with Kinect in mind, and while it does function quite well with Kinect, I prefer to browse with controller for the most part.

Online I'd have to go with PS4. My experience with it has been flawless, however so has Xbox Live, but if it counts, I can't stand the party system on Xbox Live. It's quite good on PSN. In addition, PlayStation Plus is an insane value which really makes it hard not to go with PSN for it's online services.

looks like you didn't get why I also cut off his "DirectX" part.

playing PS4 almost everyday, pretty happy with my purchase. Some people are complaining about lack of games but to me its been great. Currently addicted to Don't Starve,

Your post made me giggle considering the fact that I could probably be your father and I've been a Playstation fan since you still wore a diaper. But many people who bought PS4 may have a different attitude and could be offended by what you just wrote. GAF is very sensitive to calling people names (which is one of it's biggest qualities).

It's obvious that people would choose the DS4. Whoever thought up asymmetrical analog sticks is completely out of touch with the players.

Please explain more because the 360 controller is widely regarded as the best controller ever made and it has asymmetrical sticks.

Damn.

Controller disparity is quite a surprise.

It shouldn't be Xbox One controller didn't really bring much new to the table that set it apart & make gaming on the Xbox One better than gaming on other platforms.

they have rumble triggers everything else you can experience on the PS4 with the DS4 plus more with the touchpad & improved sixaxis.

DS4 seem like a nextgen controller that will allow new experience on a console while Xbox One controller seem to be the only one holding the devs back from using these new experiences across the board on PS4 , Wii U & Xbox One.

That's the joke. My post was to illuminate that people just use post-hoc reasoning when justifying why they like something.

There were almost 8 years of people saying the 360 controller is more popular to the PS3 controller because of the asymmetrical sticks. The way DS4 has been received invalidates this.

I see. Makes sense.

Go third party and Nintendo will make so much money it's scary. iOS/Android/PS4/Xbone/Steam... it's right there for the picking!

I hardly give a fuck about these polls, because as stated above it's impossible to have a fair competition if you don't know how many of these people own both consoles

But the more i see the Ps4 winning in gaming library the more it makes it funny and pretty clear too

And the PS4 doesn't have Snap or HDMI in, or voice activated TV guide, or Skype built in, but somehow faster installs make it have better software.

Faster installs over non gaming related software in a games console.

My tv does everything xbox one does non gaming realted subscription free

Surprised about the Game Library category. As someone that owns both consoles, I've found myself playing the X1 a lot more because the games. Then again PS4 has the superior version of most third party games. So I guess I get it.

I'm in the EU so voice activated tv doesn't work for me. Also there's the 50 Hz problem and I can't watch tv or dvds because of the constant stutter. The Xbox One also doesn't support Dolby Digital 5.1 through optical output.

Snap is a godly feature though.

I only own an Xbox One at the moment but I've noticed so many issues with the Xbox One system software that I can't imagine the PS4 is worse.

That's the biggest laugh for me as well.

Whether it's gaming related doesn't matter. Their OS is simply doing more whether it's for you or not..

I'm sure your TV does. But the Xbox has it all built in to the OS so.....Do we say it doesn't count because it's not "Gaming related" ? That's kinda silly.

I have to agree with you. When we talk about games, there is more to play on the PS4 then Xbox One. There are no f2p games for the Xbox One. The PS4 had already some f2p games at launch and we also have some greet indie titels like Contrast and Don't starve. We will see games like inFamous Second Soon, Drive Club, and Outlast. What does the Xbox One have in the coming months?

Please explain more because the 360 controller is widely regarded as the best controller ever made and it has asymmetrical sticks.

But do people think it's more ergonomic because the sticks are asymmetrical, or did its more ergonomic shape make people prefer the controller no matter where the sticks were?

Don't see a problem with the "games library" result. What makes the Xbox game library better? There are a couple more retail exclusives but the overall library is smaller than PS4. Multiplats are also better on PS4. Whether each systems exclusives are better is purely subjective so there is no right or wrong answer.

The OS doing "more" is an issue to a lot of people though. It's a waste of system resources for people who are focused on gaming and an overhead to people who physically can't use these services properly due to not being in the USA.

Again though, no point arguing peoples personal preference :P

But PS4's OS is far more streamlined and easy to use and that's all that counts as far as i'm concerned. Ease of use.

If i want to go to settings I go to the clearly labelled option which opens immediately.
whilst not having to have a splash screen show up on everything i pick.

Metro is awful.

The only thing i desperately want on ps4's Os is a games section. The "library" doesnt cut it. Nice it shows all your downloads but that should be a different section altogether. Not a problem at the moment but later on down the line when i have loads of games i'd actually like them to be in some sort of order.

I said this in another thread earlier today, but even though X1s OS has more features, I prefer the PS4 OS over it. X1s is clunky and needs to be updated on many fronts. I know not everyone is a fan of PS4s simple OS aesthetically, but IMO it's sleek and does what it needs to do. It values performance over looks.

The staggering gap between the PS4 and X1 when it comes to DL speeds and installing games can't be ignored. Unless you own both systems, you don't really know what a massive difference it is. It's so fast on PS4, that I didn't believe it at first. Also PS4 has twitch working at launch, which has proven to be one of the coolest things the gen this far. Snap on X1 is cool, but it's often laggy and sluggish. Apps like Netflix and Hulu look and work better on PS4 (considering X1 is pushing for the all entertainment in One Box, this is disappointing). And we aren't even getting into how PS + is by far a superior service to Xbox Live in terms of the extras it offers.

So yeah, all in all I totally can see why people prefer the PS4s OS over X1s in their current state. It's slick and streamlined. It just works well out of the box. Whereas the X1 feels like it's in beta build. I've found myself playing my X1 a lot more than my PS4 (due to my preference for X1s launch games) by a large margin actually. But anytime I boot up my PS4, the OS and overall feel of the system is much smoother.

But do people think it's more ergonomic because the sticks are asymmetrical, or did its more ergonomic shape make people prefer the controller no matter where the sticks were?

The new shape of the X1 controller was a step back, but i don't think that's why it's such a step back from the 360 controller. The stick tension, and the size of the sticks combined with the poor bumper design is what ruins the controller imo.

It's still a really good controller, just not as good as the 360/ps4 controller. In my opinion of course...

This doesn't surprise me.

Some people in this thread are making a big stink about the software, but honestly, multiplats are better on the PS4, which accounts for the majority of what people play. As for console exclusives, I'm far more interested in Resogun, Knack and Don't Starve than I am in Forza, Ryse, Dead Rising or Killer Instinct.

Obviously preference for certain games is subjective, but nobody can argue that objectively, multiplats on PS4 generally benefit from a higher resolution and an occasionally higher, more stable framerate.

Yeah, i agree that Microsoft has better exclusives right now, and a much better difference in game types. I have played a good amount of time on both my consoles and i actually like the OS in PS4 better, i think the XB1 OS looks good, but there are some obvious design flaws. The PS4 OS is easy to navigate and easy to understand, and the Netflix app is so much better. I can't say much about what better between PSN and XBL, they have both worked flawless for me with almost no downtime, but i can see why people like PSN better with free games being offered to you every month.
