Robocop (1987)
Visitor Q - it is hilarious when you show this film to unprepared friends.
Check out Ringo Lam's films, many of them fit your criteria. The Chow Yun Fat prison films are good too.

Full Contact might be the best revenge film.

I really enjoy cynical matter-of-fact entertainment so I would recommend the movies:

Lord of War

Thank you, for smoking.

English title is Inside. French home invasion horror movie. Comes to mind immediately when I think of movies that rattled the living fuck out of me.

Hmm, is this not the one when the attacker
or friend appears with the eyes cut off?
that scared me.

The cop that gets hit in the face with a flare gun or something. Him turning around with his face half burned out is one of the most startling images committed to film imo.

We Need to Talk About Kevin was a pretty emotionally brutal watch.

Doubt is also good for something somewhat less heartwrenching.

I have never met anyone who watched irreversible and not gone....fuck that. My wife made me through out the DVD back then

Sounds like you are asking me to recommend Come and See.

And I shall oblige.

Amazing film. Stayed with me for some days after watching.

Also: I saw Watership Down for the first time a week ago and it has stayed with me. It's a cartoon about rabbits but it's really bleak and quite gory. While the rabbits do talk like humans they are limited to realistic animal behavior so if one is caught by a snare and foaming blood the others don't know how to deal with it etc. A really good movie. Reading the book now.

LMAO @ that being rated G.

Au Revoir, Les Enfants
Watch the loss of innocence of a young German boy in an autobiographical film written and directed by Louis Malle.

Or, if you're in for lighter fare, try the batshit insane Miasto 44 (WARSAW '44.)
A light-hearted telling of Polish teens forming a militia to try and stop the Nazi's from invading their town. Things go poorly.

Just listing movies off as I think of them, no specific order.

Snow Angels
All is Lost
Disconnect (2012 film)
Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
Gone Baby Gone
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Winter's Bone
Shotgun Stories
The Deer Hunter
Moon
Love Liza
Calvary
28 Days Later
The Thin Red Line

I tried to remove movies other people already listed but I might've missed some.
